Tyler Flowers is your 2014 starting catcher
As far as we can tell, Sale, Danks, Paulino, Quintana, and Johnson all have healthy arms, and ready to go. Don't judge a damn thing about pitchers spring training in Arizona. Arizona is a terrible place for spring training competition. You set your roster before you get there, and if they stay healthy, you go north with that team.

2014 Minor League catch all thread
QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 20, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) 2-3 yrs? I'll take it. He'll prob start at Kanny this year, get promoted to W-S mid season...... I know there are special cases where players have nothing left to prove at a given level. But that should be rare. Hopefully Courtney Hawkins sucking last year taught the Sox not to be in such a hurry to move guys up, especially high school draft picks. There's absolutely nothing wrong with taking a HS player and giving him a full year at each level on his way up. It would also help managing the player's expectations as they move up.

2014 MLB catch-all thread
Aroldis Chapman hit with a Salvador Perez liner. Carted off the field. It was the 6th inning and they decided to call the game. Scary stuff. https://twitter.com/ctrent/status/446490659659083777

2014 Draft class
Rongey was talking about Gillaspie's brother a little bit on the radio. He's a large human being. Switch hitting first baseman. Off to a good start. http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205302891 I'm not sure if he's good enough for the second round, but maybe he's someone to keep an eye on.

ST: 3/19 vs Angels
Here's Davidson's HR. http://m.mlb.com/video/v31589991/laacws-da...n-to-left-field Davidson is going to be a monster at the Cell.

ST: 3/19 vs Angels
QUOTE (Baron @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 06:41 PM) Davidson is going to make it hard for them to send him down It's a good problem to have. Gillaspie is weird--too good to send down, but not good enough that other teams are beating down the door to trade for him.

ST: 3/19 vs Angels
Why does Hawk keep saying Semien won two MVP's in the same season? You would think somebody could correct him when he keeps saying something wrong.

ST: 3/19 vs Angels
Webb and Cleto instead of Boggs and Axelrod is fine with me.

3/19 Roster Moves
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) So who of the remaining 38 players are on the bubble? The rotation is set. So nobody is on the bubble there. Bullpen locks if healthy--Lindstrom, Belisario, Veal, Downs, and Jones (yes, Veal is a lock) Bubble: Axelrod, Cleto, Boggs, Webb, and Petricka. Putnam and Purcey will get cut. I'm thinking Axelrod stays as a long reliever, and Cleto stays because he's out of options. Boggs is the wild card. He may just be let go, since his agreement with the Sox was that he had to make the 25-man. Webb and Petricka will get sent down, but we'll see them before too long. Position--right now, no room for Davidson, Micah Johnson, Liddi, Jordan Danks, or Tekotte. But a trade could open something up for Danks. Keppinger's injury probably means Leury Garcia goes north. Beckham's injury could help Semien make it.

2014 Draft class
It must be a very stressful thing for scouts to decide on just one guy. Such a crapshoot when the arms are all good, and the level of competition varies from player to player. Seems like a big horse college pitcher is a safe bet, and then just hope he stays healthy.

3/19 Roster Moves
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 11:40 AM) Who are you DFA'ing or 60-day DLing then? I'm 99.9% sure it's Nieto at this point. A trade is still possible (maybe De Aza) that could open up a 40-man spot. They could release Boggs. They could DFA Molina. Cleto is out of options.

3/19 Roster Moves
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) There's just no point in keeping Giminez if they think Nieto has any upside at all. Giminez is a nice role player, but his type is readily available every year. Methinks it'll be Nieto. It could be Nieto, but I think it's more likely they're trying to just keep him in the system and send him to AA. He hasn't played above A-ball. We shall see, but I'll go Gimenez for now.

3/19 Roster Moves
If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But I still find it unlikely Nieto makes it to Chicago next weekend.

Spring Training 2014
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 19, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) Looks like Nieto has a real shot VS Hector. Also I find it encouraging that Micah Johnson is still up. If Keppinger and Beckham were healthy right now, Johnson would probably be gone too. Johnson and Liddi are backing up the backups. No knock on Micah though. He's going to be a good player.

Spring Training 2014
I'm telling you---Axelrod will not be denied.
-
ST: 3/19 vs Angels
I would think they're trying to work on a deal with Washington to keep Nieto in the system. They'll go with Gimenez unless they make a trade.

ST: 3/19 vs Angels
Update--Phegley and Rienzo are cleaning out their lockers. Heading to minor league camp. So are Wilkins and Surkamp.

Scioscia bringing a good lineup for Johnson to face. CSN and MLB Network https://twitter.com/EKayAngels/status/44630...3131904/photo/1 https://twitter.com/ChiTribKane/status/4463...2879361/photo/1 Off day tomorrow. I'm guessing there will be a large group of roster cuts today. Very few guys on the bench today. Phegley not listed as a bench player or as an off day. He might be on the chopping block this morning.

Sox vs A's 3/18 ST game thread
Arizona is a good place to train and get their work in, but the games don't resemble anything real. Hard infields, high skies, breaking pitches don't break. It's nice background noise, but not much else.

2014 AL Central catch-all thread
Royals using Ventura 3rd in the rotation means the Sox will probably miss him the first weekend. Quintana vs Guthrie for the Royals home opener Johnson vs Chen Sale vs Shields (seen that before)

Paulino now using a cutter
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 18, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) Anybody seen more than one of Paulino's starts so far? I thought he looked terrible yesterday, despite results. He had no idea where that ball was going when it left his hand. Stuff was solid, though. Is this pretty much how it's been so far, or did I watch a particularly off performance? I caught a couple innings this morning, and I agree the results were better than what I saw. He got away with a lot of bad pitches. At the very least, he'll be given a couple months of starts if his arm is healthy. If after 10 starts, he has 5 quality starts, around 55-60 innings, and an ERA around 4.50, that's pretty much what you would hope for from a guy in his position.

Spring Training 2014
https://twitter.com/DanHayesCSN/status/445955041656967169 Beck impressing. It would be great if they can get him in the rotation going into next year, like they did with Johnson this year. And then whoever they draft in June by OD, 2016.

U.S. Cellular Field Problems
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) All ex-players tell stories. We just hear Hawks on a daily basis. Maybe I wasn't clear. Stories are fine when they're applicable. But when it comes to the "In my time zone..." stuff, he needs to let it go. He's become way too preachy the last few years. And maybe some of it is that he doesn't have any chemistry with Stone. It's just a bad broadcast team.

U.S. Cellular Field Problems
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) It has been torture to listen to spring training games this year. There haven't been a lot of Sox broadcasts, so I have been forced to listen to the other teams feeds. It makes me want to kick puppies. It's tough when other broadcasters are misidentifying Sox players and mispronouncing names. Hawk still has good pipes and energy, which is great. But he would be so much better if he would completely ignore that he was once a player. If he just called the game on the field and let the color guy do his job, he would be so much better. He's constantly talking about his own playing career and how things used to be, and it's not entertaining. And if he's spewing the same stuff over and over, it's unlistenable---"the first rule in baseball is to catch the ball"....yes Hawk, we know, thank you.
