Can anyone recall a more gut-wrenching few weeks?
Paint it Black replied to ILMOU's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Late August/early September 2005. The Indians couldn't lose and we couldn't win. Yeah the past few weeks have sucked, but at the start of the season I thought the Twins are better and they are. At least this team gave me a month where I didn't want to miss a pitch, and coincidentally enough I was unemployed, so it was a nice escape from reality. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 14, 2010 -> 09:25 PM) Was it your intention to bait people to anger with this post? No it was not. I stand by the fact that Putz has not been able to get anyone out the last two weeks. I'm not sure if it's a slump, or a bit of a statistical correction of some sorts. Maybe the day off on Monday will correct a pen that has been overused the past few weeks. Either way, Putz should not see a situation where we are leading or trailing by 2 runs. Santos and Sale have been getting hitters out.
-
So how do you Putz apologists want to explain the latest meltdown?
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 9, 2010 -> 09:27 PM) it happens. My point. If people are going to react over every Jenks outing, why not do the same with Putz?
-
THIS. I never understood why people love giving up outs, especially with hitters at the top of the order.
-
I CAN'T BELIEVE OZZIE HAD PUTZ FACING THE TOP OF THE ORDER. AWFUL BULLPEN USE. I HAVE BEEN SAYING IT SINCE 2005 OZZIE IS AWFUL AT HANDLING THE PITCHING STAFF See how ridiculous some of this is?

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 9, 2010 -> 01:51 AM) Again...will it ever air on Comcast SportsNet? I want to see it >. hit 999 on your comcast remote (I'm assuming you have a cable box) then click on White Sox and go from there. My friend didn't have MLB Network at he was able to watch it with ondemand.
-
No. Why would you want to take away starts from Danks/Floyd (or whoever your two best starters are)?
-
I'm a big believer in more efficient bullpen use. For example, use your best reliever when the game matters most, be it the 7th or 8th inning. Conversley, if you had the bases loaded with 2 outs in the 8th, and you had your best hitter on the bench, you are going to pinch hit in that situation. You wouldn't save him for the 9th because it's the last inning, the game is in the balance now. I could never figure out why bullpens are not used the same way. With that being said, I hate the term "closer my committee" It should be "whoever can get me the 3 damn outs" is pitching the 9th. Moreover, if Jenks is your best reliever (I'm not saying he is, rather the sox are by having him the closer) bring him in the 8th when you have the middle of the order due up. Or for that matter, bring in the best arm you have.

the comments after the loss in the game thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) I get bored with the opposite of finding the negative in everything. Especially the people who never post until the team starts playing badly, even if it is just for a few innings. I get bored with people overreacting over 1 game in a 162 game season. It's not the NFL. -

O's are running out Millwood (2-11 6.05 ERA), Guthrie (5-11 4.21 ERA), and Mutusz (4-11 5.26 ERA) while we will run out Floyd, Buehrle, and Jackson. Danks has been VERY unlucky all season and it just continued last night. I still like our chances to win the next 3. -
I'm really excited to see this kid pitch. However, the last two games against Detroit did not yield a good opportunity. Chris Sale, welcome to Baltimore.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 11:02 PM) Every pitcher has 1-2-3 innings from time to time. Even Linebrink. That in itself isn't praise, see Bobby's WHIP etc. I have said that Jenks has not been very good this year. But there has been a lot of over exaggeration in this thread concerning how bad Jenks has been. I just think that if you want to nitpick the awful outings, then you must also recognize the good ones. What is done in the middle is where one should be judged.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) Ozzie doesn't have anybody playing over their heads. Outstanding starting pitching, a 3-week tear by CQ and a favorable schedule is how we got back in this. No manager that consistently runs Mark Kotsay out there as his everyday DH deserves credit. Would I be sticking by Ozzie if somebody other than Jenks blew the save? You obviously didn't see the thread I created a couple weeks ago. I've long soured on Ozzie Guillen. 2005 was exactly that. 2005. He's just not that good a manager. 3 blown saves in like 3 weeks? Yes. Sabotaging the season. What more do you guys need? Another blown save tomorrow or next week? We've got a f***ing 1 game lead and we have a closer that can't be trusted with a 2-3 run lead, let along a 1 run lead. Someone has forgotten about the 1-2-3 outings Jenks has had since that awful Twins loss. Also, apparently it's Ozzie's fault that the White Sox finally got to play the weak part of their schedule. Doesn't Ozzie get credit for believing in this team the whole year, when people like you were proclaiming the team dead and vowed to not watch another pitch this season? Ozzie manages the pen almost as good as any manager in baseball. That's not just my opinion either, but that of many scouts and people actually in baseball.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) A blown save in game #163, probably. He's already single-handedly sabotaging our season as it is. 3 blown saves is sabotaging the season? I'm not defending Bobby here, I mean he has been pretty bad. But seriously, lets turn down the rhetoric down a tad.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 04:45 PM) Jenks will close as long as he's on the roster. I've accepted this. If we win this division, it will be despite Ozzie. Not because of him. No. Currently the White Sox are 1.1 games OVER their Pythagorean over/under. Arguably, Ozzie has them playing a bit over their heads. Conversely, the Twins are 3.4 games under. But keep thinking it's Ozzie's fault that his players fail when he gives them opportunities to succeed. I'm sure if Santos/Thornton/Putz whould have blew the game, you would have been sticking by Ozzie, right?

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:56 PM) Would you have even wanted to trade Mitchell for Dunn? It just seems the price was exceptionally high. Yes. Mitchell is so far behind now it's worth the risk. This team is built to win now anyways. -

QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 03:53 PM) f*** Berkman than....the Cell needs to razz this s*** out of this f***er when he comes to town as a Yankee Would you rather play for the White Sox or Yankees? Berkman wants his best chance to win a title, why fault him for it? He even apologized to KW. Christ don't take it so personal. -

Good, I didn't want a slow DH in the middle of the order clogging the bases -
QUOTE (champs2005 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 11:11 AM) Lighten-up all you wave haters. It is entirely possible to watch every single pitch and participate in a wave as it rolls by and to glance up at the waves progress. It doesnt make you any less of a fan to have a wave done at your ballpark or God forbid to raise your hands and yell a little as it goes by. Jeez Louise. Not everyone who goes to a game has the radio on headphones and keeps score with the pitchcount noted. At least wavers are in their seats and yelling. THere are plenty of worse things to do at a Sox game (ahem, and bathrooms) than do the wave. Believe me, the players dont care about the wave at all it doesnt faze them please dont think for a minute Putz was bothered by it. No it makes you look like a second rate fandom that doesn't care what is happening on the field. Stop doing the wave, it's not original nor is it fun to do at a game.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 01:43 PM) The 2006 Sox collapse was caused by the collapse of the offense, as well as the general suckitude of our pitching staff (particularly our bullpen). But I tend to side with Balta in the sense that I feel it's fair to say Mack's defense in CF lost that team several games. And considering we finished 5 out of the playoffs IIRC, that's a big thing. Mack actually had a good offensive year that season too, and it's not his fault Ozzie kept putting him out there even though he sucked at playing CF, so I always felt kind of bad for him though. It was 6 games. At first I was pretty dismissive of your claim, however, after looking at some of the advanced fielding metrics Mackowiak was really bad. How is he gave up 31 more runs than an average center fielder, bad? However, something to consider is that they had very little options. At the time in 2006, Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus wrote on possible outfielders available via trade. The three big names were Bobby Abreu, Carlos Lee, and Alfonzo Soriano. According to Nate, the Sox would have gained 1.61 wins, 1.44 wins, and 1.12 wins with the respective players, obviously still not enough to catch the Tigers. Playoff probability % added for each respective player was 18.9%, 16.5%, and 12.8%. The best point of Silver's article though is: "Still, that doesn't quite answer the question of just how much these teams should be willing to give up to acquire one of the big sluggers... It isn't worth giving up someone like Brandon McCarthy... the market price for one of these outfielders should be a second- or third-tier prospect, and not much more. McCarthy then went onto be traded that off season for John Danks. Maybe we got lucky?

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 09:53 AM) You have to start moving Beckham up in the lineup. You're wasting his bat in the 9th spot. THIS. You already have Pierre being awful at the top with a .329 OBP why kill the top of the order more with Vizquels not much better .333 OBP.

White Sox at Twins 7-18 game thread 1:05 first pitch

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) Okay so serious question... Should Jenks be used as trade bait? I bet he would thrive in the NL. Should be be flipped to an NL contender for some prospects that could add to a package for a trade to get a LH bat or another starting pitcher? They tried to trade him in the offseason and had no takers. Why would anybody want him now? -

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 04:37 PM) I see the Peavy incident as Kenny Williams trading our best prospects for below average pitching at the deadline this year. Don't get me started on that rant. Kenny should stand pat on starting pitching. Those "prospects" suck and still do. -
Real's thread topics: LOL Garbage, fact.
