NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 6, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) I don't really care that they added 2 schools out east - you still should put the tournament in a centralized location, so it's easier for more schools to get to. This hurts a ton of fan bases, especially those that decide to make the drive in day 2 or 3 as their team advances. DC makes that almost impossible. Of course they don't put this there if there aren't 2 new schools...but why are they? It's a fair question, because putting a PAC12 tournament on the east coast is similar what the DC tournament will be for the majority of the teams. No one, at the moment, considers Washington DC a B10 market. It's a terrible idea to put the tournament at the very outskirts of your "territory." The "there are things to do in DC" doesn't really do much when you have Chicago to work with. I don't think for Joe Wisconsin fan sitting up there, he's going to be more apt to make the trip there than to Chicago or Indy because there are things to see. It's more of an inconvenience. You are right, but I think this shows that the fans aren't what matters. Advertising revenue, sponsorships, BTN deals, money is what matters. I doubt the Big Ten's bottom line for the tourney is hurt much if there are 19k or 15k at the game. If they can increase their future revenue by playing in DC, that's what they are looking at. If DC is too far for Joe Wisconsin to drive to the tourney, is that gonna effect how many future B1G games he watches? Will it stop him from attending the following year in Chicago or Indy? Nope -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 6, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) My friends and I are debating this over email right now. My arguments: (1) I bet he pays next to nothing for his location, (2) he has very little staff - himself, 2-3 bus boys, 2-3 cooks. I'm sure they're not making much more than minimum wage. (3) it's a cash-only business, (4) the food, while unique, isn't all that complex. It's not like he has to stock an entire kitchen for 40 entrees, (5) he has a 2 hour wait every day he's open, (6) he's been on national TV shows and won all sorts of national awards. Still, even if he hasn't pulled in that much, surely the place is worth that much. He should have opened up a couple of restaurants by now, but even though he didn't a buyer would. I think he could get several millions easy if he wanted to sell. It seems pretty simple to me. The guys is there everyday and takes every single order. When he runs a restaurant he wants to have complete control over everything, he doesn't wanna be sitting back letting others run the show and make decisions. He has said this much himself in interviews. It takes a lot of work and now he wants a break. As opposed to having someone else run it and possibly ruin the name or change the style or feel of the place, he would rather just close it. Not everything is 100% about dollars and cents.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 6, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) They do, but they have a special hate for a select group Anybody who thinks differently than them.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 6, 2014 -> 10:58 AM) My concern is how much work they are getting in. Robin is going to them a lot and that could really hurt us in the summer. Not much Robin can go about it given the current state of the rotation.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 5, 2014 -> 03:16 PM) Furniture store recommendations? Lot of stuff we have so far is from Crate and Barrel. Anyone have good/bad experiences with places? Mainly looking for couch, love seat, dining room set, maybe a few other pieces. We got most of our stuff from Macy's and it all went smoothly. Everything has held up pretty well so far.

On scheduling killing the Cubs/Sox series

QUOTE (Tex @ May 6, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) I don't think they should do anything special for the Cub / Sox series than they would for whomever the Rockies have an interleague rivalry with. When you start looking at the scheduling and looking at the entertainment value or the ability to sell tickets, you get one step further away from athletic competition and closer to show business. There is a blend that has to happen or the sport collapses, but I don't necessary want to sell the soul of baseball and athletics for staged for profit series. You are about 10-20 years too late on that. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 6, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) I went to Wrigley last night. They said 33k but closer to 25k IMO if that, where actually there. It was so cold. One thing about USCF, those boards in the OF block some wind. Nothing to block the wind at Wrigley. My hands were frozen. I didn't anticipate needing gloves in May. One thing they don't do at Wrigley that they do at USCF now is the pat down and wand check of your being. I wonder why the Cubs don't have to do it. They do that for Blackhawks games now too. I thought it had something to do with concealed carry, but is it weird that Wrigley doesn't have to.

It's the era of the super conference and the B1G is trying to gain control of the Northeast. As long as it's not every year, I don't see it as a big deal. Plus, I think it would be awesome to have the tourney at Madison Square Garden one year. -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 6, 2014 -> 08:17 AM) With the NFL Draft Thursday and the Blackhawks potentially sweeping the Wild that night, it could be rough attendance wise. I won't even have the baseball game on tv on Thursday. Game 4 is Friday night. -
Ten minutes of interview clips with Wild goalie Ilya Bryzgalov the cosmonaut. Pure comedy http://deadspin.com/compilation-video-of-i...pure-1572160271

BAM!

Another 8:30 start time announced for Game 4, but at least it's not a school night.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 5, 2014 -> 08:03 AM) There are more people in Canada than in Boston. I figure it would make up the difference. Yes I know that the Canadian TV contract is separate from NBC, but I'm talking about overall viewers. EDIT: Also, the Lakers, Knicks, and Bulls either didn't get into or are already eliminated from the NBA playoffs, so that should boost ratings in those US cities even more. If the Habs make the Finals, you may have more total viewers in Canada than in the entire US. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 5, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) Boston isnt that large of a city but I'm sure they pull regional viewers as well. That's what I was trying to refer to, the large amount of Boston fans in the North East. Although their arrogance and loud volume probably leads to an over estimation as to the size of the fanbase.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 5, 2014 -> 06:47 AM) Hockey's final four could involve teams from the three largest US cities and the second largest Canadian city. If that wouldn't pull big TV ratings, nothing will. The presence of a Canadian team would actually hurt TV ratings in the US, especially if they eliminate a market like Boston.
-
They could sell tickets for a dollar and Sox fans would still b**** about how expensive tickets are.
-
Cubs broadcasters are all over the sabermetric train, heard them talking about an unsustainable line drive percentage the other day.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 4, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) Game one Wild for sure played better hockey. Today they didn't play that well outside of a period. Hawks have basically slept-walk through 2 games and up 2-0. Wild just aren't talented enough take advantage of something like that. And the Wild are on their fourth string goalie, the Russian cosmonaut. (Who actually has played well) When the playoffs started I was questioning the Hawks making the conference finals, now they are suddenly the favorites with Boston to win it all. (Of course anything can happen in hockey)

If we traded for a stud RH starter this year who would it be?

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ May 4, 2014 -> 07:52 PM) If I was Rick Hahn and I was making a move on a starting pitcher... I'd be looking west towards San Diego. The Padres have a guy in their system that is gonna be lights out. His name is Heywood Jablome. Padres match up well with the Sox as trade partners too. This is the best post I have read in a week on this site. -
If you think it's only the Sox with an attendance problem, turn on ESPN. Half full Wrigley for a Sunday night Cubs Cards. Baseball is dead in Chicago.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 4, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) It is interesting to look at the Cubs top prospects performances this year: Baez: Terrible Bryant: Terrific Almora: Bad Edwards: Good but seems like major health issues Soler: Injured Alcantara: Decent but terrible peripherals Johnson: OK, but some command issues Vizcaino: Good but just a bullpen arm Candelario: Ok Vogelbach: Bad Just shows the fickle nature of prospects and was interesting considering the various degrees of performance from our own prospects. But you have one having two guys having great years, some ok performances and then some terrible ones. Although their major league guys who under achieved last year seem to be playing pretty well so far.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2014 -> 04:39 PM) The White Sox need to talk to the Hawks about the ninth inning, because they know closing. The Hawks just learned how to close about a week ago, around game 4. Since then they have been Mariano-esque It kind of seems like the team playing better hockey is down 0-2, but I will take it.
