Official 2013-2014 NCAA Football Thread
LittleHurt05 replied to Kyyle23's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 09:50 AM) You can't have a sport with 100+ teams and a 13 game season where every team has a chance to win a championship, regardless of the system. The only way for every team to have a chance to win the championship is to pare down the top division to 70 teams. How many teams are in the lower divisions that have playoffs? -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Hopefully that is put in to place very quickly after the 4 team playoff. But I have a feeling they will drag their feet The problem is that the bowls make so much money for people that you can't just get rid of them or downgrade them. The biggest obstacle is keeping all those bowl execs happy. -

I'm all for teams like NIU getting BCS bids. Other than the title game, the only thing at stake is $$$$$. Let the mid-level conferences see some of that dough too. Let a "Cinderella" team have their shot a big-name school. It's more entertaining IMO than a standard SEC vs ACC battle with zero bearing on the championship. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 08:22 AM) Frankly, Wieters is a busted prospect who is 2 years away from being a very expensive free agent, and people are talking about trading 3 players for him. Christ If he had 4 years of service time left, he would be a great "buy-low" candidate for a team like the Sox. But given his situation, IF he lives up to his prospect hype, then he just prices his way out of your budget. Maybe you do trade him for something, but it doesn't seem worth the risk.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 07:44 AM) My wife's grandfather, a 90 year old WWII vet who fought at Normandy, died last night. Not very many WWII vets left. My condolences. I was hanging with my grandpa yesterday. He's 91, fought for the Polish Army during the war, spent several years in a Russian POW camp.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) Your splits are probably optimistic. Admittedly, my OBP was low, but expecting anything more than .220/.320/.460 is expecting too much. Adam Dunn is comparable to a durable Travis Hafner at this point in his career. Hafner got $2 million on the open market and it took until February 1st to sign him. He's a last resort sort of guy anymore. Unless the Sox eat about $7.5-10 million of his deal, they aren't going to move him and even then they'd get jack diddly in return. Come on wite, you know that durable & Travis Hafner don't belong in the same sentence. Hafner has played in 100 games once in the last 6 seasons. Dunn has played at least 116 games in each of the last 12 seasons and 149 in 10 of those.

Official Recruiting Thread II

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) If people are going to suspect Illinois of foul play in getting a recruit like Cliff, take that times 10 for DePaul This is my favorite part of recruiting. If Calipari gets that basketball recruit, he has to be dirty. But if he goes to my school, he's obviously clean. But if he goes to a really s***ty basketball school, of course they are cheating. All those top 100 football recruits at Alabama are so getting paid. But no top 100 recruits at my school are breaking rules. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 08:19 PM) Yeah Ekey is shockingly athletic. Dude can fly. Wasn't expecting that. Racist -
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 08:09 PM) With such a small sample size, it wouldn't be difficult for a handful of homers off righty relievers in those games could have a big effect on that number. Edit: in reality, he hit 6 homers off lefties last year. He hit 9 homers in games in which a lefty started. So he hit at minimum, 3 homers off righty relievers in the 26 games he started against a lefty. B-R has a HR log. All 6 homers vs. LHP were given up by starters. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 07:46 PM) I think he meant he gets them out like one $20 per visit... When you have a 16,000 square foot house...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 06:08 PM) 15 years for Hurd Could have been a lot, lot worse. Lesson learned, don't discuss buying kilos of coke with Mexican gangster drug dealers, even if you are just "helping a friend".

Both Detroit voters included Greg Holland as 5th?

QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 01:04 PM) It's been alsomst 10 years since we traded Aaron Miles to the Rockies for Uribe. Both had decent careers. Time flies. They both won WS rings and started at least a couple WS games.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) Well, 100's are completely impractical. And the only places they dispense larger bills are strip clubs and casinos.

In the other inter-continental playoff, Uruguay pulled off a 5-0 win in Amman today. Jordan now needs at least a 6-1 victory in Uruguay next week. Good luck to them. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 10:19 AM) Muschamp inherited a ridiculous amount of talent, he just did jack s*** with them. They did go 11-1 last year before not showing up for their BCS game. I think that's the only reason they give him one more year. -

Think about how crazy the 2017 NCAA Tournament will be when Parker, Randle, Wiggins & company are all gonna be seniors. -
If you re-sign him, you basically have a platoon of 3 guys at 1B & DH, none of who can play any other position. That leaves you very little flexibility in the DH spot. I like to give everyday players occasional breaks at DH. If a lefty is on the mound, Dunn can sit, and Avisial or Tank can DH get a breather.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 07:22 AM) You are wrong. Look at the numbers more closely. He had a .973 OPS in games he played where a LH started. Not a .973 OPS vs. LH starters. Good catch. That's a kind of a weird for split for B-R to use. It's still interesting that his OPS is that high in those games, I can't imagine he faces that many right-handed relievers.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 07:26 AM) First leg of NZ-MEX is today. Lets go Kiwis!!!! The new Mexican coach decided not to call up any of their top players from Europe. -
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 09:56 PM) Regardless of what happens, I don't know if it's appropriate to use the adjective "major" in reference to the 25th man on the roster. Ha, that's a good point. It would just be 100% based on nostalgia, not a baseball decision, which bothers me.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) Excellent article about Sam Hurd. Breaking Real Bad: Inside the Sam Hurd Drug Case Interesting. He may not be the drug kingpin he is portrayed as, but he sure as hell left himself in some vulnerable situations. Also interesting to read about all the weed smoking with NFL players.
