  1. The 2013 Sox still suck. That is the truth.
  2. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 06:37 AM) I said the Sox mainly because of the pitching talent, but also because the AL Central is a pretty weak division right now. Tigers are good but look headed for a decline. Indians and Royals never seem to be able to turn good farm systems into winning major league clubs, and the Twins are still years away. I concur. The Cardinals are always good and the Pirates seem to have figured out what the Royals can't.
  3. Well this thread went exactly the way one would have expected it to.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 11:18 PM) Even some top 10-15 prospect from their system would have been a lot better that the crap we got. And I doubt the Red Sox are calling off trading for Peavy over that. How do you know that? They were already giving up Iglesias and taking on Peavy's salary. I'm not sure if he was worth another top 10-15 prospect.
  5. Finish off the sweep tonight, then time to go back to tanking for a top draft pick.
  6. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 11:07 PM) I can't believe people still watch that show. How is it still on the air? It's the one sport left where PEDs are still allowed.
  7. Frank is the worst human being I have ever seen in my life. LeRoy will win a challenge one of these days. Ty will not.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 07:41 PM) Jayson Heyward out 4-6 weeks With a broken jaw after taking a fastball to the face. Details matter this time.
  9. Big Hurt Beer: Beer so good we can surround it with these "women" and you will still want to buy it!
  10. Here's to 28 straight years of playoff-less baseball in KC. ADA Beckham Alexei Dunn dh PK14 Garcia Conor Tank Phegley Rienzo
  11. I read that article a few days ago and I agree 100%. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way in our country, i.e. the NCAA.
  12. When our daughter was born, we met with an estate attorney. We ended up getting trusts set up for both of us. She also set up a living will, DPOA, and basically covered every possible legal & medical situation that could arise, so I felt comfortable with it. We also listed exactly who should take care of her if something happens, which was good since my wife has a bigger family. It was a bit pricey at $2,500, but I thought it was worth in the end. (We also own a couple rental properties, one which is co-owned with a family member, so that our made situation more complicated than others)
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 12:04 AM) well, if he was sitting around now with a 700-750 OPS, I do think the thread would be a BIT more active....don't u?
  14. Payback is a b**** KC. Forget the draft pick, I want the Sox to sweep this series to help ruin KC's limited playoff chances. Good job Danks. I really think he can get back to his normal self by 2014, which would be huge. The rotation would be even tougher.
  15. The "dump John Danks for a bag of baseballs" crowd is quiet tonight.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) It's funny how in the Pro Football Hall of Fame you pretty much can't get in unless you win and win big. It's totally different in baseball. But in my opinion, Baseball's Hall simply cannot ever consider Dunn unless he wins something. You are talking about a guy no other team will even acquire at his current salary! Nobody in baseball wants him, folks, at his current salary. And we're talking HALL OF FAME? Just in the last 5 seasons, these guys were all inducted in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Chris Doleman, Dermontii Dawson, Cris Carter, Cortez Kennedy, Floyd Little, Curtis Martin, Randall McDaniel, John Randle, Wille Roaf. What do they have in common? Zero Super Bowl rings. You must be disgusted that Ernie Banks is in the HOF with his zero playoff appearances
  17. QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) I heard some TV announcer a week or two ago talking about Dunn, saying that IF he averages 40 homers per year for the next four years (after this year) that he will be knocking on the door of 600 lifetime Home Runs and thus earning Hall of Fame consideration. He is currently at 434. Can't remember who said it, might have been one of the ESPN talking heads. He will turn 34 right after season end. I had an immediate gag reflex. His lifetime BA is .240 by the way. I hope that the HOF selectors don't count just HR totals but you never know. IF he can get to 550-600 home runs without PED suspicion, I think he absolutely deserves consideration. There's not that many names up there, that's a pretty impressive career. Harmon Killebrew's career BA was .256.
  18. So if a roster of 25 "replacement players" would be expected to win about 40 games, can one assume that each "replacement player" is worth about 1.6 wins to their team every full season?
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 08:19 AM) So you would rather Dunn have hit 20 extra singles last year while sacrificing 10 homers, correct? That's the argument you're making. If so, why not just sacrifice all those homers and get 60 extra hits? I mean, really, honestly, I think Alexei Ramirez would make a great DH. Calling it phantom production is a crock of s***. Production, no matter how you come up with it, is PRODUCTION. Dunn is a flawed player, but to suggest he was "bad" last year is like saying Jake Peavy was "bad" last year. Juan Pierre for DH!!!
  20. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 06:16 PM) Suck at what? They are designed to answer specific questions. And they are questions that "traditional" stats don't have an equivalent for. If all versions of WAR suck, then what is the "correct" way to compare individual player performance on both sides of the diamond while controlling for team context? WWHRD (What would Harold Reynolds do?) The answer to WWHRD, as far as I can tell, is argue about it and never come to a consensus. If that's as far as you want to be able to take it, then fine. But what's wrong with trying to find answers to interesting and useful questions about baseball? Well he strikes out too much, well he doesn't walk enough, well his defense good enough to justify his bat, blah blah. Well don't you want to actually try to find out? This post probably reads jerkier than I want it to. I'm sorry if that's the case. My post was a bit sarcastic, I do enjoy the new stats, I just find it annoying that the first response to a post about Sale's WAR is "No, that one sucks, don't use it!" How are you supposed to have a good discussion about player value if that's the first thing that pops up?
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 05:42 PM) They don't though. They are different numbers and you should decide to like or hate them based on their own merits. It makes no sense to say fWAR sucks because bWAR sucks, for example. Well until these geniuses get together and create one standard WAR stat then I say they both suck.
  22. You know it's a great stat when everybody calculates it differently.
  23. Nationals acquire David DeJesus for a PTBNL. Nothing like strengthening the bench of a non-playoff team.
