Yoenis Cespedes traded to Detroit for Rick Porcello
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 12:39 AM) I've come full circle here on Cespedes and would really be happy if the Sox acquired him. My reasons: 1 He fits in the lineup 1 Eaton L 2 Semien R 3 Abreu R 4 LaRoche L 5 Cespedes R 6 Gillaspie L 7 Avi R 8 Alexei R 9 Flowers R Is not bad at all, and yea the 3 consecutive righties at the bottom of the order is a slight problem but nothing than cannot be remedied by pinch hitting (hi Carlos Sanchez). That's a good lineup, if Avi and Gillaspie play up to their potential it's a great lineup. 2. The price I think the Red Sox expected way more interest in Cespedes this offseason and they are getting virtually none, at least none offering the price in exchange for Cespedes they imagined when they acquired him for Lester. Cespedes was not in the Red Sox plan at all but they thought he would be an asset that would net them a greater-than-Lester return this offseason. That has not matierialized. Now the Red Sox are stuck with a guy they really do not want with the looming threat of getting just a draft pick in 2016 in exchange for Jon Lester. The price here could be as low as Tyler Danish/Micah Johnson + Courtney Hawkins (perhaps in a 3 way deal that nets Boston their coveted starting pitcher). That's pretty damn cheap for a guy who we know can at least play a big league OF. 3 He can improve He may be 29 but he also hasn't been in MLB for long. Most players are not Jose Abreu, it takes them time to figure the thing out. The Sox would be buying low on a guy with great athleticism and a very nice power bat, if the OBP even climbs above .340 Cespedes is probably a 3-4 WAR corner OF. I know it's cliche, but playing with Abreu and Alexei could really help him. He gets along with them (unlike Puig). 4. No commitment If it doesn't work, well, he's gone at the end of the year. A comparable FA signing bust would create an albatross the org just has to wait out. But! If it works the Sox gain the inside track on locking him up long term at the end of next season, effectively solving the corner OF hole. It's not a win/win, but at least it's not the kind of commitment that really holds the org back. There's no way in hell I'm giving up Hawkins for 1 year of Cespedes.

Jonah Keri Trade Value Column
QUOTE (shysocks @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:57 AM) Yep. The Jays would trade Encarnacion (49) for him? The Phillies wouldn't give up Hamels (39)? Not sure how Hamels and his huge contract made it at 39. Especially when you consider Quintana was better last year.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) And what does any of that then have to do with anything? Why are you b****ing about some f***ing looting 2 weeks ago after a man was choked to death and gets no justice. Nobody cares about your fetish for fully operational 7-11s. Because that's just a distraction from talking about the real issues.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:41 AM) There you go making s*** up again. Point out where I said that. I said they were idiots. Lazy and unemployed was never mentioned. Opportunistic would apply, since I would wager that most of the looters and stuff looked at the opportunity as an easy way to get free stuff. Then you also have the outside agitators, who at times seemed to be the majority. Different motives for some of them altogether. Professional anarchists, anti government types of all kinds, a few commies and some white-guilt liberals sprinkled in. I said that people in Ferguson might not want to join the police department because they view them as the enemy after the events of the Michael Brown shooting. You more or less said they would rather go burn buildings down. Tell me how I'm supposed to interpret that.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) Quintana being nothing more than an honorable mention is puzzling to me, and a big miss on Keri's part. A guy who put up 5+ fWAR on a cheap contract under team control for a while. He's also left-handed. It's not easy to get into the top 50, but it seems like Quintana is the perfect combo of talent, team control, and below-market value contract.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:27 AM) Yeah, I guess burning down a bakery makes more sense. I'm sure all those protesters set stores ablaze. Because they have nothing better to do. Because they're lazy and don't have jobs...

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:12 AM) Have I ever said it didn't exist? Quit projecting an image that you have of me, because you don't know me. I know it exists. Just saying that instead of rioting and acting like idiots, maybe do something positive like police your community. Join the force. Would be a much more positive action than burning and looting a convenience store. Maybe get that force up to 50% black and see if that helps community relations any. See if it helps to ease tensions and get better police protection. And what makes you think those people want to join the police force after what they saw as a huge injustice by them? If you can't beat 'em, join them?

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) Did you notice the word MORE in what I wrote? There obviously isn't enough, because every time something like this happens you hear the race-baiters talk about how the department doesn't mirror the communities. lol we should hire more minority cops so we won't have discussions on racial tension anymore? Because if it's black on black crimes, you can tell us how violent they are some more? Please stop acting like it doesn't exist. Because it still does. I may not be black or Hispanic, but as a minority living in the south, I still see it.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 08:52 AM) Maybe there should be a push nationwide to get more minorities to become police officers, and to help serve in minority communities. I'm tired of hearing "White cop..." Get some black cops. Or would that ruin their street cred by becoming the Man? Would black cops be called sellouts, or worse? Seriously? You're acting like there are no black cops or something...

2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread
The Cubs have a couple of good arms in Arrieta and Hendricks. There's also a chance Jackson stops putting up a 6 ERA when he figures it out again. Lester would give them 4 good arms. He won't make them an instant contender, but that would be a decent rotation.

Sox have contacted Max Scherzer
Remember when Scherzer was actually traded for Edwin Jackson? Then we overpaid for Jackson a year later? And then we traded him away for peanuts the year after that?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) To be fair, even though McDermott is old for being a rookie, we've seen rookies typically take their time when Thibs's system is thrown at them. Mirotic has a full year on him in age and has faced better competition before, plus the Bulls might well have been working with him for longer since they had his rights. Judge McDermott as a failure in 2-3 years, not now. If the Bulls hadn't traded those picks for him (and assuming that "trading them for Melo wasn't an option) would whomever they drafted with them be getting much PT right now? I'm not bashing the pick at all or anything. I think we did give up a lot for him, but I still think he could be a good NBA player.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 09:49 AM) McDermott has been a dumpster fire on defense and is hitting 9% of uncontested 3s. But it's early december. Players can get better just through practice, and lets remember that Bellinelli was a healthy scratch in games in december before he figured out how to play for thibs. Yeah, he looks so lost out there defensively. The uncontested 3% is probably just nerves. He's probably too anxious out there.

So Mirotic is playing extremely well and McDermott is a benchwarmer. I think we all said at the beginning of the season that if just one of the 2 turns into something valuable, then we'd be fine. I really want to see McDermott succeed, but he really hasn't shown much outside of one or two games. But then again, someone who gets maybe 5-6 minutes a game will have a hard time truly showcasing his talent.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) It looked to me like Kirk fouled him on the floor. I'm actually very surprised they didn't at least look at it to make sure he was shooting. I assume that's reviewable at the end of the game, but maybe not. Contact definitely started before he started shooting. Either way, the foul should have been in the back-court long before he could even take a real shot. If he tries to lob one from back there, there's no way they'd call that in the act of shooting since they know he was just chucking it to get a foul. Dallas was out of time-outs. Letting them dribble down the clock a few more seconds wouldn't have made a huge difference.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) I guess Shaq was a little off when he said Gasol was done. So many good pick and rolls late in the game. Entire defense was keyed in on Derrick and Gasol got numerous wide open 17 footers. It was beautiful. Gasol's still had some awful games for us though. He won't ever be the guy he was back 3-4 years ago, but what's left is still productive and way better than Boozer.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) I agree, yet he still is putting up 21/8/6. Those 21 points are on 21 shots and 7 free throws though. Jimmy's been so efficient this year. It's so rare to see him with an inefficient game.
