QUOTE (Y2HH @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) I think they're kind of too big...but there isn't much I can do about that at this point other than use older tech (which we both know I'm not doing). I'm kind of at a crossroads now, I have the choice of going big...or phablet big, and I'm not sure which to go with. I would be hesitant to get the Plus and I've been using what iPhone users would consider big phones for a while.

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) IMO, the future of the laptop looks a lot like the MS Surface Pro 3. It would raise an interesting semantic question as to whether that means tablets or laptops "won." There's a rumor the next big Nexus tablet (made by HTC) will be sold along with a keyboard case. That'll be interesting for sure.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) It has a bigger screen. EDIT: That's literally it on my end. I'll have to play with both, but I see no reason I wouldn't want the bigger screen. Also, that likely means a bigger battery and definitely more storage. It has better battery life according to Apple's specs. I think it's a 3000 mAH battery, which is a good size. It's also got a better camera with optical image stabilization.

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) A 5.5" phone is no replacement for a tablet. With that said, larger phones will increase the demand for smart watches - the watch will seem more and more useful as the phones become unwieldy. One thing I do think is essentially true is this: there is a fight going on between phones, tablets, and laptops. Two can win, but one must lose. I'm not sure which it will be. Will our main computers become very tablet-like (Surface Pro) with larger phones, with no dedicated tablets? Will our phones get big and we stick with conventional laptops for heavier tasks, with no tablets? Will phones get enormous, essentially becoming tablets, while we leave the heavy tasks to laptops? Do we find tablets acceptable for computer tasks and ditch computers as we currently know them entirely? I don't even use my personal laptop anymore. I only use it when I have to reconfigure my router...lol. When I travel, I just use my tablet.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) I've got the Note 3 and the bigger screen is awesome. There's literally no downside. It fits in jean/work pockets just fine. You can use it with one hand unless you have freakish carny hands. If you're wearing tight pants, well, stop, and also put it in your jacket pocket or a bag. My wife was hesitant at first but now she loves it. Bigger is better. Women actually like the huge phones since they just put them in their purse anyhow.

I'm very disappointed with the design of the Apple Watch. When you put it next to a Moto 360, it just doesn't compare. Hell, put it next to an LG G Watch and I'd probably like the look of the G Watch better. The dial on the side, the cheap looking finish, they just don't do it for me. Putting a nicer band on it might alleviate some of that, but the watch-face alone looks cheap and uninspired. Battery life is also likely to be poor, which is surprising for an Apple product. My friend mentioned this earlier today: Apple is great at iterating on its products, but their very first products (albeit flashy) aren't great.

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 12:31 PM) Part of the reason I'm attracted to the iPhone 6 is that it looks like my HTC One, particularly from the back. There are still some big problems with iOS 8 for me, though, so I don't know if I can pull the trigger. It looks nice, no doubt. But yeah, software is always an issue for me when it comes to any Apple products. The thing with iOS is that it works well out of the box for anyone. I don't know how many people I see with Android phones with crap running in the background (T-Mobile's stupid monitoring app, weather apps, etc.) that drains battery with wake-locks. In other words, people don't know how to properly optimize their phone (they shouldn't need to honestly) and developers don't care when they wake-lock the crap out of your phone and drain your battery in 6 hours. You don't get that issue with iOS because developers simply don't have that freedom. So basically, it's either you know your way around Android and try to control wake locks (not many people do or want to bother) or you end up with a phone that lasts a lot shorter than it should and has shoddy performance. Google is finally trying to control wake-lock usage in Android L, which is very much needed. Now it just depends on how many developers update their apps to use those APIs.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) Hah...I have no interest in that iPhone 6 Plus or whatever...how much bigger is the 4.7 than the current iPhone? I need the damn thing to fit into my pants pocket, and I wear tailored slim-fit pants. I can't have any other large objects in there; there is just only so much room... The phones are both very thin. The 4.7 inch one is about the same size as most 5 inch Android phones (Galaxy S4, Nexus 5), so there's some reference. Also:

That iPhone 6 Plus is very big. I suspect it's taller than the Note 3, but probably thinner. Smaller iPhone 6 is 720P, 5.5 inch is 1080P.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) Fair enough, saw the time of post as this morning and figured it was up-to-date. Come on Fangraphs, get with the program. Side note - Flowers' WPA last night was an even 1.0 Gotta be close to tops for a single game this season. Anybody know if the WPA for every game by every player is on a leaderboard somewhere? It was up to date. They update it in real-time actually.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) FWIW, I managed to get two different phones, one personal, and one through work, and wanted to offer some thoughts. First off, Verizons network just destroys Sprints. I have had many spots where I know I have no sprint service, where Verizon comes through. I have yet to find the opposite. Next, the phones themselves. I got the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8) Galaxy wins on -The camera is excellent. It is the first cell camera that I actually liked a lot. -Removable battery -hand position of buttons HTC wins on -Speakers being on the front of the phone, and FAR superior quality -battery life is awesome, especially in standby mode Yeah, the M8 is the far superior phone. It wins in pretty much every major category except for camera.

Apple will include NFC in the new iPhone, which means mobile payments might finally take off (take off as in registers will actually have NFC sensors in them now and they'll all work).

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) Seriously. I don't care if someone has a Galaxy and likes it. I am comfortable with my iPhone and excited to get the 6. Leave me alone. It's just funny that Apple fans continuously jabbed Android users for how big their phones were for years and now that Apple is doing the same, I'm sure a lot of people will stop doing that. I'm curious to see if they'll release a new 4 inch version. I think there's a subset of Apple users who actually prefer the smaller screen.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 09:48 AM) iPhone 6 reveal today, apple fans rejoice, droid fans mock. Lol When they reveal the 4.7 and 5.5 inch iPhones today, people who said they'd never use anything close to that big (looking at you shack...) will probably eat their words. The 4.7 inch phone is about the size of a Nexus 5, haven't seen the 5.5 inch one yet, but I think it might actually be bigger than the current Note 3.

9/8 vs Oakland A's
QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) Prophetic. That's a mischaracterization - it looks like you're including any catchers with any plate appearances at all, in which case he is 30th out of 97. And there are guys ahead of him with 15, 20, 40 games played. The league wRC+ for catchers is 94. Flowers now sits at 96. That doesn't hit me as substantially below average. He was at 89 yesterday, the two homer game brought him up a bit. I Think Eminor3rd was using yesterday's numbers.

9/8 vs Oakland A's
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 01:42 AM) Well to be fair, Lester and Samardzija have pitched really well in Oakland. It's not like they have been duds, so I don't think those trades were failures, it's just that their offense suddenly fell off a cliff. One of those trades gave away one of their best hitters for a pitcher they didn't really need. They were already stacked with pitching. That's what would make the Lester trade look bad. A lot of people had the exact same train of thought when the trade was made.
-
And that a Tyler Flowers walkoff White Sox Winner!!!
Flowers has a higher wRC+ than Brian McCann and only 0.1 less WAR (due to playing time).
-
9/8 vs Oakland A's
If the A's somehow choke, it would make that Lester trade look absolutely awful. The Samardzjia and Hammel trade wouldn't look good either considering the prospects they gave up for a rental and 2 years of a decent, but not great pitcher. Part of the reason they've been so bad is because they haven't hit at all recently. Although Cespedes wasn't a world beater, he did provide some value in the middle of that lineup that they really miss right now. Plus, after Cespedes left guys who hit behind him like Moss kind of fell off a cliff.

Jose Abreu general discussion
I actually prefer second half Abreu. He's been hitting like Miguel Cabrera. Sure I'd like to see a few more homers, but you can't complain about a .438 OBP and .534 SLG.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) Not sure, since you know, he's from Sudan. I mean I know he's originally from Africa, but what's the point of even bringing something like that up? Especially if you're a GM in the NBA. So stupid. I feel like it's way worse than what the Hawks owner said.
