QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) By the way, I completely agree...it is a bad scenario. I could live with it if it is because Lauri is a superstar, Levine comes back amazing (and continues an ascension) and Dunn becomes a beast. But I don't see all of those things happening (or at least not happening that fast). But there are a lot of really really bad teams in this league. Like a lot. It's why I said in another post we need to move Lopez sooner vs. later (and I can also see then moving Mirotic sooner...albeit I think if you hold him a bit longer, he could pad his stats and actually create some value). I think there are 12 teams in the East that are definitely better than the Bulls. Every team out West is probably better. I thought coming into the season that Bulls and Hawks were easily the two worst but New York might give them a challenge -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 11:11 AM) So since I'm on a run of hot takes...I truly believe this Bulls team (as constructed today), if healthy, makes a run at the 8 seed. Not because the team as a whole is any good...but because the East is freaking terrible. We are way too good to be a bottom 3 team (if healthy). The injuries should give the Bulls a head start (in terms of tanking), but if Levine is healthy later on and Dunn make strides, we are going to win more games then people expect. If Bulls are serious about tanking, they'll need to move Lopez sooner vs. later (cause he flat out is a solid player who will drive wins but doesn't fit the long-term strategy) and who I would hope we could get some form of young asset for. No shot. And what you are suggesting is a worst case scenario. They are committed to being terrible this year. They know that they need to do whatever is necessary to lose a ton. Atlanta, New York and Phoenix will challenge them but this is one of the worst teams in the league. It's imperative to land Porter Jr, Bagley or Doncic. It's a complete failure otherwise. They'll likely move Lopez, Mirotic and Holliday as well. Markkanen is impressive. This is a very bad basketball team though and it's that way by design. -

QUOTE (Da_Goob @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 02:02 PM) Rumors that it isn't just Ayo, but the Irvins too. If the Illini chose to take THT it may have cost them a good chance at guys like Okoro, Miller, and Whitney. I would have called Ayos bluff too if it didn't have the Irvins backing it. Maybe so. Simeon is down too but you get run the risk of alienating them. What if you do this and then you don't land the MIF guys? -

This is stupid and I'm not even an Illini fan. I would accept THT's commitment and go from there. Ayo Dosunmo really gonna make himself look stupid and de-commit after all the "staying home" talk last week? You can't let guys like this dictate what you do with your program. He's good and it's a big deal for Illinois but he's not like some immediate top 3 pick or something. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 12:34 PM) Nationals are a good job...albeit they go through managers like crazy. I don't think there's any chance the cheap ass Lerner's fork over the cash that it would take to hire Girardi -

What is the big deal though? THT is a SG and Ayo plays PG. I don't understand what the problem is. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) Wow...I wonder who will hire Girardi. He's a really good manager, imo. I think he sits out the year -
QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 10:01 AM) It was disgraceful when the Cubs did it, it'd be disgraceful if the Sox fire Ricky solely to hire Girardi. I think Ricky earned next season. Disgraceful?

Arizona Fall League Preview - White Sox prospects

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 02:29 AM) Seby Zavala should be moving up the org depth chart right now. The White Sox should give him a shot to make the roster out of camp and if for some reason he doesn't make the team, he should get full time catcher reps in Charlotte. This is the type of thing that really accelerates a rebuild, finding a guy like Seby Zavala who comes out of nowhere to be a 4+ WAR player at a premium position for you, which he will be if he continues to hit the way he has for the past year and just manages to be not terrible as a catcher defensively. If he can hit like that and play good defense, he could be a future MVP candidate. Owen? -

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 23, 2017 -> 01:12 PM) The other part of that quote leads me to believe that despite Bobby punching and injuring Niko the locker room is backing Portis. They tried to create an environment based on competition and hard work with their young group. Bobby Portis has been working since the beginning of the off-season. Niko Mirotic showed up at the start of the season, signed, and was handed the starting job at PF. That's not Mirotic's fault by any means but it's absolutely a factor here. Add in the fact that Portis and Niko don't get along and they play the same position. The punch was 100% uncalled for but it's pretty easy to figure out how this all happened in hindsight. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 13, 2017 -> 11:14 PM) It seems to me we've acquired all the prospects we need.I may disagree with the rebuild but what's done is done. We have a projected team to win it all at some point. Trading is DONE. 3B - Burger/Davidson. SS-TA. 2B-Moncada. 1B-Abreu I hope or maybe Gillaspie or somebody. RF-Rutherford. CF-Robert. LF-Eloy C-Collins. Pitchers: We know the names. Get em ready and acquire some vets when it's time to win as well and get some arms for the pen and one veteran stud starter. Is my position that odd? This really isn't how this works. All of these guys won't pan out. Ideally, your future outfield is Robert, Jimenez, and Rutherford with Collins, Sheets, Moncada, Anderson, and Burger on the infield. It won't work out that way though. The team is going to be below average again next year. It's a very important time though. I truly think that they have 2019 as their target year to "maybe" contend. They will be spending $$ on the 2018 free agent class. This next year will be about letting guys learn and grow and figuring out which young prospects will be on next good Sox team, which ones are bad, and which ones are potentially "blocked" or not in the plans and those guys can get traded for something that the Sox do need. I would expect the Sox to add multiple free agent relievers to flip at the deadline and also probably 2 starting pitchers. Rodon is a question mark. Shields will be in the rotation. Lopez, Giolito and Fulmer all could be as well with Kopech and Hansen coming at some point next season. They need to protect their young pitching though. Your position isn't odd. I disagree with it though and the Sox likely do too. They have decisions to make on Abreu and Avisail this offseason. A guy like Leury Garcia is about to get "expensive" too and they need to make a decision there as well. If I had to guess, the Sox trade Nate Jones, Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia at some point in the next 12 months.

Corey Seager can technically return during this series. If a player on the roster gets injured, Seager can replace them. It's been speculated that Seager needs a bit more time. They could theoretically have him miss 2 games against Lester and Q and then someone on their team gets "injured" and Seager takes their place. Only catch is that injured player who leaves during NLCS is ineligible for World Series roster

QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 12:16 PM) Heyman is reporting that Holland will opt out and pursue free agency. Any chance the Sox are involved? He was pretty great to start the season and faded considerably late. The Sox track record with relievers lately coupled Herm's ability to keep everyone healthy could be appealing to him. Thoughts? Not likely. The Rockies will most likely give him a Qualifying Offer. The White Sox would have to forfeit their 3rd rounder to sign him. While it's not as a severe of a penalty as giving up the 1st pick, I don't see any scenario in which the Sox would forfeit picks this offseason.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 11, 2017 -> 10:49 AM) With Jackson’s college injury history, have to say I’m not a fan of him returning kicks Yeah I agree there. He's their best guy back there however. Cohen never returned punts or kicks in college either
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 11, 2017 -> 10:42 AM) Deonte Thompson cut to make room for Gentry, so it seems like they want him to stick this time. I wonder if he will be returning punts also I doubt it. He's not a return man. He's pretty much a "9" route guy without an advanced route tree. It's why the other 31 teams aren't interested in him. Cunningham likely returns kicks and Jackson/Cohen stay with PR job.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 11, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) I don't see any reason why this changes this year, though, which is why I'd bet the #1 overall pick will not be a college pitcher. You are probably correct about that. However, Detroit, San Francisco, Philly, and the Sox don't have extra comp picks to save money for which could prompt them to just take the best player regardless. I think HS guys are the top 5 in the class anyway though.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) Past few years seems like there has been a disconnect with the Draft writers rising college talent up the boards and the actual draft picks. Think Kyle Wright, whose strong finish had writers putting him in 1-1 conversation. McKay too. I think the writers see the college kids more and have a slight (not big) disconnect on how the teams are valuing the HS kids. Kyle Wright wasn't going to take the discount that Royce Lewis did though. That's a huge factor for teams like the Twins who had multiple picks in the top 50. They got a discount at #1 and then paid a tough HS signing multiple times throughout the rest of the draft. Hunter Greene was the best player in the draft and the Reds paid him accordingly. Mackenzie Gore was the best HS pitcher but also was cheaper than Wright or McKay would have been in the same spot. Tampa Bay and Atlanta were willing to pay around $7 million for the top college talent that fell into their laps.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 02:03 PM) Really? Brad always seemed alright, I know he was a Chicago area guy. He used to workout at my gym in Lockport back in the day.
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:24 PM) I will be surprised if the Sox pick a HS player. Not that he doesn't deserve it but the sox just don't typically take HS in the first round. The last one I can think of was Gio Gonzalez in around 2004-2005. Either way they just don't do it often. I'll be very surprised if they don't take a high school player. It's the strength of this draft class. Nick Hostetler has spoken at length about how they need to get younger and that he wants to add more high school talent to the system. He's actually said that he likes scouting HS players better because that was his original job as a scout. He mentioned it on 670, with Barstool Dave, and on our FutureSox podcast.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 01:49 PM) I get the feeling they want to establish a precedence against this kind of action, but seeing with what they did to Boston, I don't want to see MLB wanting to create an incentive for players to try to get out of their contracts either. Pushing him back into the international pools kind of accomplishes both instead of creating this huge feeding frenzy of complete free agency. It also follows MLB own rules to a T. He isn't old enough, nor is he considered to have enough professional experience to circumvent the rules. He's not an international amateur anymore though. He played in the United States last year. It wouldn't really make any sense. If the White Sox decided to release a guy like Josue Guerrero right now he wouldn't be limited to bonus pools. He'd be a free agent. I have no idea what they'll ultimately decide but it's the first time something like this happened.
-
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:05 AM) Guys, Sox can't sign him because of the Robert restrictions. I believe they can't sign anyone for over 300k until 2019, IIRC. There is no way they aren't going to have him subject to International Pool money. It would open up a can of worms that they don't want opened. I don't see how mlb can make him an international amateur again after playing in the United States this year. This is a precedent that's never been set before. That's why it will be really interesting to see what happens.
-
QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 08:58 PM) It will be a really interesting case study in how much the draft limits contract size if he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He's ranked lower and is younger and therefore more risky than Luis Robert, so it should be below the $25 mil he recieved, but it would probably be above the highest draft bonus. Wild guess, it would end up being around $10-12 mil. I think Maitan blows past what Luis Robert got on the open market. He was the most highly regarded Venezuelan amateur signing in quite some time with Miguel Cabrera comps being thrown around. He held his own as a 17 year old in Rookie ball last year and likely is in A ball as an 18 year old this next season. I think he'd get $30 million plus easily.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 08:08 PM) With the Red Sox players, they were released from their contract from MLB but still were paid full amount from contract This is true. None of those guys played for the Red Sox though. Maitan was stateside in A ball this year.

https://theathletic.com/116743/2017/10/02/r...igning-scandal/ Braves also had a deal with a 14 year old for 2019 class. This is quite the slippery slope if true. The majority of teams have agreements for guys already in 2018, 2019, and 2020. It's the nature of the international market. This could get really interesting. keithlawVerified account @keithlaw Following More Related: There are int'l kids who can't legally sign until July 2nd, 2020, who already have verbal agreements with teams.
