  1. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Jan 22, 2018 -> 10:34 AM) Yeah, he rakes in a ton of K's in A ball.. He didn't do anything close to deserving of top 100 I didn't expect Collins to be top 100 but you defaulting to strikeouts after someone gave you evidence of the kind of hitter he is says everything needed. You don't need to be taken seriously in this regard.
  2. I think I was the high man on Sosa. I had him in the back of the 20's. 17 years old and can likely remain at SS. In 180 PA, he slashed .270/.330/.358. Not great by any stretch but he went basically right to rookie ball. It has been said that he'll be on Baseball America's top 30
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 22, 2018 -> 09:45 AM) Upon looking up Adells stats I take back my assessment that they are overshooting, that's a nice debut with good k rate from someone people questioned their performance vs top competition. Yep. Adell was my top target for Sox
  4. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 22, 2018 -> 08:50 AM) I think Robert's ranking is pretty strictly based on his little exposure to higher level competition. I imagine he will be a top 25 prospect at this time next year. As for Hansen, he was previously unranked, so that jump for him is pretty impressive. I think we should all be pretty happy that the Sox might've landed a #1A or #2 with a 2nd round pick. That said, seeing this kinda gives me similar feelings to what bmags expressed. Hansen is the only player you've drafted in the last 3-4 years that cracked the top 100? I'm not sure that speaks highly to the talent evaluation in our system and that is a little scary. I think Collins, Burger, etc. will be useful MLB pieces, but can't help but be a little irked that the industry isnt a little higher on people the Sox have drafted and developed. How many players on these lists are ranked that were drafted after Collins and Burger? I haven't really looked. Just curious.
  5. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 22, 2018 -> 08:16 AM) https://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/top-...pfgzrHUro9iD.97 The Sox with only five top 100 prospects: 4. Jimenez 11. Kopech 57. Hansen 58. Robert 82. Dunning I’m actually shocked by how low Robert is ranked and somewhat surprised about Hansen. Only 5? I thought they'd have 4 when I saw BA's top 10 list. Really happy to see Dunning there. I'm high on Collins and Burger so this is a positive.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 12:25 PM) I think you are being way to premature here. Engel was up very early for what he has accomplished. He wouldn't have even been up if it wasn't for injuries, Eaton's trade, and May bombing. Engel has also showing a propensity for getting it after an amount of time, much like Leury. He might not hit this year either at the major league level, but it is way too early to relegate him to a 5th OF title based on the fact he has hit in the minors plenty enough if he were to hit at the same level in the majors. I'm not writing him off but I wouldn't bet on it. He's a constant tinkerer. Always has been in the minors too. He'll have success doing things a certain way for 10 days and then totally change have success and then become bad again. Rinse and repeat. Even if he's an extra OF and can carve out a career, he's a great scouting success as a 19th rounder. I just wouldn't be couting on to contribute really.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 12:14 PM) I would rather have Willy Garcia than Engel/Tilson...at any rate, all those guys and Cordell will get their chances, just like even Jacob May did a year ago. Willy can't play CF though.
  8. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 11:29 AM) I like it other than Engel...he needs to be in AAA if he's not starting. Can that guy we got from the Brewers play CF? Why does he need to be in AAA? He's not an actual prospect. His likely major league role is as a 4th OF. There's no harm in letting him do that.
  9. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 07:46 AM) They'll probably platoon like they did last year with the other coming in as a late inning replacement for Delmonico. Of course, this discussion is moot if Tilson can stay healthy (ok, I couldn't say that with a straight face ). IF Tilson is healthy and there are no further moves: C: Castillo 1B: Abreu 2B: Moncada 3B: Sanchez (can spot start at 2B) SS: Anderson LF: Delmonico CF: Tilson RF: A. Garcia DH: Davidson (some starts at 1B and 3B as well) Bench C Narvaez IF/OF Garcia OF Engel With this set up, they can go with an 8th reliever or carry another bench player (Saladino maybe). If Tilson makes the team, I think they do this C Castillo 1B Abreu 2B Moncada SS Anderson 3B Sanchez CF Tilson LF Leury RF Garcia DH Delmonico Bench: Narvaez, Saladino, Engel, Davidson
  10. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 08:02 AM) Not too surprising. He has a lot to prove My only question is whether he's a catcher. If he is, he's an All Star in my opinion. He spent the offseason straightening out the hitch in his swing. The knocks were the strikeout rate and batting average. This player is good though: 2017 Winston-Salem: .223/.365/.443 118K, 76BB, 17 homers 130 wRC+ and .367 wOBA 2017 Birmingham (small sample): .235/.422/.471 .414 wOBA and 166 wRC+. 2016: .885 OPS after his college season.
  11. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 12:23 AM) I disagree that it’s Leury’s job to lose. I think it’s either guy’s job to win with Engel slightly ahead due to highlight reel capabilities and years of control. Both are fantastic guys to have on the bench but I’d say the Sox will favor Engel out of the gate in Spring Training. Just a hunch. But I’ve been biased ever since somebody compared him to Trout 3-4 years ago. Leury Garcia was on his way to a 2.5-3 WAR season last year. Adam Engel is bad at baseball. I'm not sure how you can come to the conclusion that Engel will be ahead of Garcia.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 10:06 PM) I do think even with that there was the "unofficial" timing of it and the chance that when he was prepping for his showcase he was learning how to run the 60 fast and that wouldn't necessarily translate. It's ridiculous but after he signed and then disappeared and then was going to be in DSL all summer and was injured, it just felt like no news is bad news for a prospect (and outta site outta mind too). So if this was only the sox saying he looks great its one thing, but for the BA and Fangraphs guys to say he looks legit, it doesn't mean he's an all star but to me it's a relief. I agree there. Those guys acknowledged before that they hadn't really seen him. I expect he'll be universally top 25-30 everywhere on prospect lists.
  13. Well I see the fun was sapped out of this thread. This is what being a fan is guys. It was fun watching him swing on video. Don't let anyone rain on your parade. Jesus f***ing christ.
  14. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 04:47 PM) It kinda makes me question the scouting on this guy if all of a sudden he's gone from a corner type with average speed to a CF with above average or even borderline great speed. Like, are the stopwatches in Cuba subject to time dilation? You'd think the one thing they could pin down would be his running ability. He's what, 19, so it's not like he's developed a ton from a 14 year old kid since the time of those reports last year. Maybe he was injured and is now 100%? That's the only thing I can think of that would result in such a scouting report change on his speed. What are you talking about? He ran a 6.2 60. That's 80 grade speed. He may move to a corner at some point because the bat plays there but it's been pretty universal from the Sox that he's a CF. Now others are saying the same.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 02:17 PM) https://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/whit...LbyPQhsGS7Kh.97 Hype machine hits 11 (free article) Nice to read: Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez are in Arizona at this camp and Luis Robert is all anyone is talking about. Some of it is that he's the shiny new toy but he sounds legit.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 12:46 PM) I didn't see that at all defensively, and while limited, the defensive numbers don't seem to bear that out either. Leury isn't close to the defender that Engel is but Leury was well on his way to a 2.5-3 WAR season with 15 homers or so. Engel doesn't dream of being a 3 WAR player in even his best dreams.
  17. QUOTE (zisk @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 12:30 PM) Which guys not in the top 30 who will be soon. Seby Zavala ? Justin Yurchak ? Luis Gonzalez ? Lets hear some names and the reasons why. Zavala and Gonzalez are firmly in the top 30
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 11:14 AM) The only person I recall Luzardo being on the table for was Sale. Nightengale reported that Luzardo and Drew Ward was the return for Robertson before it fell through.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 11:01 AM) If Tilson has Jesus wave his magic hands over his body and outperforms Engel in ST, then this isn't unreasonable. Is Polo slated as the starting CF in Charlotte otherwise? Polo/Tilson right now? My guess is that Cordell is in the mix as the starting CF in Charlotte. If Tilson is healthy, I think he's on the team. Could play Delmonico at DH with Tilson in CF and Leury in LF.
  20. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 09:34 AM) Nope I don't drink coffee and I also don't want to pay $60 a year to read a few articles.. So you wanna quit being a dick or what? You want people to copy and paste paywall content so that you can read it for free. I'm not the dick here.
  21. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 10:50 AM) JR Fegan's coverage of the White Sox is very regular and detailed. I was on the fence for awhile, but am very glad I subscribed. They had a black friday discount in November which really brought the cost down. I'd highly recommend all Soxtalk posters subscribe, as the small cost per month is worth the quality Sox news and analysis. There are deals all the time. It's the best White Sox and Bulls coverage in the city. You also get all the other sports, every article from every other Athletic site as well. The White Sox hitters mini-camp is currently underway. At FutureSox, we have Kim Contreras there covering. The only other outlet in the city covering it is James Fegan. That's one reason why The Athletic is awesome and worth it.
  22. As a matter of fact, here's my early guess for the Affiliates: Charlotte: Kopech, Adams, Guerrero, Stephens, Danish, Covey Birmingham: Hansen, Dunning, Banks, Puckett, Lambert Winston-Salem: Cease, Clarkin, Flores, Solorzano, Martinez, Andre Davis Kannapolis: Hickman, McClure, Henzman, Comito, Peralta
  23. He might be on the team because of his defense but nothing should be given to him. He was one of the very worst players in baseball last year. 336 plate appearances 6 Homers 35% K Rate .247 BABIP (was unlucky) .166/.235/.282 wOBA .230 wRC+ 37. -0.7 fWAR. I think there will be much better overall options in the OF. His defense is spectacular but his .OPS is barely over .500.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 10:02 AM) With Johnson, while it's clear they see him as a reliever, I can't remember if they said they were going to work him as a starter in the minors. Does anyone else recall? Here's my guess: Tyler Johnson in relief as a back end guy at either Kannapolis or Winston Salem. McClure and Henzman will likely be starting at Kannapolis.
  25. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 08:10 AM) Can someone copy and paste that article? That link only had the first 2 paragraphs How about you just subscribe? Are you a coffee drinker? It's literally the price of 1 cup of coffee per month. It's the best deal in the city.
