Rule 5 draft preview
My Rule 5 Preview for FutureSox drops tomorrow. Some interesting options.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) A team trying to win this year can absolutely trade something significant away, the White Sox...not so much. I just meant that I didn't know if anyone would meet the asking price. For example: St. Louis could trade Sandy Alcantara and Jack Flaherty for 1 year of Machado and then recoup a 1st round pick for him. Most contenders can't do that.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
I don't know why anyone would give up anything of value honestly. He's not going to re-sign anywhere. He'd be a fool not to reach free agency.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 09:09 AM) There's factors (like his contract size, >$50 mill) but it should be after the first round. Teams just don't automatically give up their highest pick. This is not true. The White Sox are a big market club. If they let Abreu walk after 2019, they will receive a pick after the 2nd round for his services.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 08:11 AM) Not a terrible suggestion, but I think the Sox might try to target players closer to the majors than Beck is. I'd aim for a better return. I think better than that for a 31 year old 1B owed around $38 million over next 2 seasons is unrealistic. I think Luzardo and Beck will both be prominently featured on top 100 lists this year. You have to trust your scouting.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
Boston and the White Sox aren't really a match but I wonder if they could be in a 3 way discussion of some kind. Oakland and Boston probably don't do this but this would make sense for Sox. Boston Gets: Jose Abreu Oakland Gets: Jackie Bradley Jr. White Sox Get: OF Austin Beck, LHP Jesus Luzardo, two low level flyers

Yankees shopping Clint Frazier
QUOTE (GermanSock @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 09:11 AM) there definitely is a reliever risk. last year in AA he walked 4.5 batters per 9, the year before that it was 5. he only walked 3 in AAA but it was just 15 innings so that is not really telling. most ace Starters are under 2.5. now he is still Young and can improve, other great Starters have been wild but there is a risk that never Comes around. I watched every start of his that was available. He walked too many guys early in the year but figured it out and was lights out after the Futures Game. Michael Kopech should be the least of your worries. He has top 5 pitcher in the sport upside and looked completely unhittable towards the end of his stint in BIrmingham.

Yankees shopping Clint Frazier
QUOTE (GermanSock @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 06:58 AM) he could be Randy Johnson but there is also a significant reliever risk with him. now the good Thing is that that "risk" could still mean the next chapman/miller/kimbrel so this is not so bad but I could see why one would trade a top30 hitting prospect for him. but of course there are also good arguements for keeping him. but I think it is closer than People here think, frazier probably would be the 3rd to 4th best sox prospect right now. I don't really there is significant reliever risk with Kopech anymore. He's the best pitching prospect in baseball. He dominated AA last year and should be in the big leagues shortly. His floor is high leverage power reliever sure but I don't think the risk is significant anymore. He's a freaking ace.

KATOH view of Rule 5 draft
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) BA's Rule 5 preview does not list any Sox players in the top 5 rated players. https://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2017...yYWagf92Hiyg.97 No they don't. Jordan Guerrero will almost assuredly get selected however

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
At this point, I don't think Stanton gets moved. Miami will get that roster and just keep Stanton on it. He has a NTC and he has the right to veto any deal. However, those big market teams have severe luxury tax concerns. I don't think he ends up in LA, NY, or with the Cubs for that matter. It doesn't make sense. The Marlins would need to take salary back from the Dodgers in order to move him and that doesn't seem like something they are willing to do. I would be all for the White Sox taking on Adrian Gonzalez and Scott Kazmir in order to obtain prospects as well. That type of scenario doesn't make sense for the Dodgers though. I can't see them trading prospects to move big salaries and then trading more prospects to take on Stanton's deal. It's fine that he doesn't want to go to San Francisco or St. Louis. I think he ends up playing on a terrible Miami club moving forward though unless he expands the list.

Winter Meetings 2017
Rumors leak out about Sox discussing Abreu but nothing comes to fruition. Sox trade for a Rule 5 pick and select RHP Nick Burdi and LHP Nestor Cortes.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) Yours and many others. You know how it is when there's an offseason lull like this. I don't think I've said that since the weekend. Sorry my post didn't have the word poop in it.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 12:38 PM) Weeks and weeks of repeating things over and over and over again ??♂️ Thank god the winter meetings are next week. Was this in reference to my post?

Abreu trade "unlikely"
The White Sox need to either extend Abreu or trade him. Holding him on his current deal while the team will be bad doesn't really make much sense. If he wants to stay forever and take a discount, then I think Hahn will be amenable. If he wants market value though, I think we see him moved. 4 year $70 million extension is the most that I'd think we see.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (kwill @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) Does anybody else think they may look at the market on Mike Moustakas? As it stands the White Sox really don't have a 3rd baseman. He is going into free agency on the younger side at 29 years old and won't command a long contract. If the price gets dropped to 5/70 million maybe with some dollars front loaded to add more appeal wouldn't the White Sox have to consider. The last year he would be playing at age 33 which means you should be getting mostly prime years. He was an above average defender until last year when he became just slightly below which could have been an off year defensively. Travis Sawhik wrote an interesting article coming to the conclusion that his power is real and could probably play even better in our park compared to a stadium like Kauffman that is a pitchers park. Next years crop of 3Bs to me is not very good beyond Machado and Donaldson. I never put any stock in us actually being contenders next year for Manny Machado as the dollars and years would scare the Sox off. Josh Donaldson would be going into the following year at 33. I think this would allow Jake Burger to take his time in the minors like we are doing with Collins. The White Sox could see how he develops, move either Burger or Moustakas when Abreu's contract is up. No. They would have to give up their 2nd rounder to sign Moustakas. Not happening.

Kevin Maitan and others
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) Longenhagen said the bat looks a lot slower now than it did when he signed. Not saying I don't wish we had him, but I can get down with not ruining next years plans to give him $2mm+ as a solid call. Sox are in penalty next year too. Nobody is an option unless it's for $300K

Ohtani signs with the Angels
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) Levi Weaver @ThreeTwoEephus Available budgets for remaining Ohtani finalists: Rangers ($3.53m), Mariners ($1.57m), Angels ($1.315m), Cubs ($300k), Padres ($300k), Dodgers ($300k), Giants ($300k) James Fox @JamesFox917 24m24 minutes ago This is true but #Rangers, #Angels and #Mariners can still acquire more international money. Texas can acquire around $1.5 million, Seattle can acquire $2-$2.5 million, and LA can acquire roughly $2 million. This is my tweet so I'll elaborate: Rangers: Have $3.53 million. They can acquire roughly $1.5 million more. Total: $5 million. Mariners: Have $1.57 million. They can acquire $2-$2.5 million more. Total: $3.5-$4 million Angels: Have $1.315 million. They can acquire $2 million. Total: $3-$3.5 million.

2017-2018 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:29 AM) I still think in my ideal scenario, we would have done what the Niners did. On paper, what an oustanding off-season, from getting a head coach I like, to buying a bunch of picks to getting your QB for a 2nd rounder (Jimmy G). No one could have predicted that would happen but job well done by Lynch (on paper). I still have zero problem with what Pace did (in regards to Trubisky) but I still think the smarter move would have been overpaying for Alshon to ensure you have at least one real pass catcher (and it wasn't like we were tight on cap space). Then again, I legit don't think the Bears expected Trubisky to play this year. Couple things from here: Alshon Jeffery wasn't staying in Chicago. He didn't want to live or play here anymore. Garoppolo was not available around the draft. Had he been, I think the Bears would have considered trading their 2nd rounder for him but the price at the time was much bigger than that. John Lynch made a couple nice moves but he also traded draft picks to move up in the 3rd round so that he could waste a 3rd rounder on QB CJ Beathard. I'd rather have Trubisky and the tantalizing prospect of having your good QB on a rookie deal then Garoppolo and having to pay him $100 million with over $60 million guaranteed.

Ohtani signs with the Angels
The White Sox may be able to benefit from the Ohtani situation and maybe also because of the plethora of international guys out on the market. The finalists for Ohtani have been announced: Cubs, Padres, Dodhers, Giants, Rangers, Mariners, Angels. Cubs, Padres, Dodgers and Giants are all limited to a bonus of $300K. The kid is said to not care about $$ and that's kind of evident with 4 of the remaining teams on his list currently unable to spend more than $300K. Texas has $3.53 million in space. They can still acquire an additional $1.5 million roughly though for a total of around $5 million to offer. Seattle has traded for International space and has a total of $1.57 million. They can acquire between $2-$2.5 million more in space though for a total of $3.5-$4 million. The Angels currently have $1.315 million. They can trade for roughly $2 million more in international space and spend between $3-$3.5 million after doing so. The White Sox still have about $1.1 million in international space. They could theoretically help a team like the Angels get him if more money is a contributing factor.

Farquhar signs for $1.05m
White Sox only have 7 guys on their 40 man roster that are legitimate bullpen options for next year: Aaron Bummer, Jace Fry, Dylan Covey, Danny Farquhar, Nate Jones, Juan Minaya, and Gregory Infante. They will be adding a ton of pitching

2018 MLB Draft
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 09:34 PM) That's paying 10M for the #33 pick. Yes. And it's very much worth it. It also won't be the #33 pick. TB and Kansas City will have 4 comp picks after round 1. $10 million for the chance to spend an additional $2.5 million throughout the draft and add a top 40 player. That'd be an excellent deal

Welington Castillo to White Sox
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) Definitely doesn't hurt that Castillo hits right handed and Collins left handed. Castillo murders lefties, Collins struggles against them. Last year vs LHP for Welington Castillo: .937 OPS, 147 wRC+, .393 wOBA.

Welington Castillo to White Sox
I'm not really sure what it signifies but it's a good signing. Led AL in throwing out runners last year and dramatically improved his framing ability and he's a good defender too. Hit 20 homers in 365 plate appearances as well. 113 wRC+, .344 wOBA, .208 ISO. Nice signing.
