  1. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) That's fine, they can bluff all they want up until the deadline, but the Sox should not budge and at that point Rodon is an idiot if he refuses to sign. There is no reason the Sox should increase their offer as the deadline approaches. i don't necessarily agree. We don't know what the Sox offer is. If it's the slot amount of $5.7, then yes they absolutely should budge. But we have no idea.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) First of all, I doubt the difference is $250-500K. I'm guessing the difference at this point is closer to $1-2 mill. If it were as small as the original numbers, they'd take a few hours and iron out their differences. Also, if I were Rick Hahn, I'd counter with "You are getting $6 milllion. If you think he's going to get significantly more than that next year, you're crazy." There is no way that they are $1-$2 million off. the slot amount is $5.7 million. The Sox literally only have like $6.5 million left. It's not old system. There just isn't any magic money that can be spent. I bet they are quibbling over the difference between the remaining Sox slot money, something just over $6 million and the overage without incurring the draft pick loss which would be over $6.5 million. He will sign. He won't get $6 million next year.

  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 12:17 PM) Not many pitchers are worth $100M per year. And it won't be packed till they're winning. A lot of casual Cubs fans I know HATED that deal and told me they're done with prospects and want to just win a couple games. The more baseball fanatic ones get excited, but the casual ticket buying fan couldn't give a f*** until they're at least in playoff hunts. Cubs fans that hate that deal are stupid. Those same fans that hate it will be back when the team is winning though. I always ask people if they like Jake Arrieta. Or Kris Bryant. If they say yes, then they have to like the current plan in my opinion. You can't be overly excited about the prospect of a Kris Bryant and gaga for Arrieta and be pissed that Samardzija and Hammel got traded. Arrieta and Bryant and all those other guys wouldn't be in the organization without the current plan. If people were smart, this is exactly the time that they would buy Cubs season tickets.
  5. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) We know they aren't going to eat the contract. What does he make the second half of his final season anyway? 10 million? No team is going to pay that for Mr. Whiff. He's not the kind of guy a team needs. If a team is a contender by now, they probably have somebody way better than Dunn. He's still on base at like a .360 clip. Offers LH power. You don't care about this because you only remember him striking out. Mr. Whiff is clever though. Instead of thinking about clever nicknames, do some research and some simple math and find out the guys on the Sox that have committed more outs than Dunn has this year. But hey whatever fits the narrative.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) At about that time they will be trying to reverse nearly 10 years of falling attendance. And they don't have the cash, otherwise they wouldn't have lowballed Smarj and then needed to trade him. This isn't true though. That place will be packed as soon as next year when the kids are there. They didn't want to sign Samardzija. They offered him that lowball deal so that he'd turn it down and they could trade him. He is already going to be 30 and not worth $100 + annually. They could have signed Samardzija. They chose not to.
  7. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 05:06 PM) It amazes me that guys continue to refuse to get help and sacrifice millions upon millions of dollars. Two of the most talented WRs in recent memory (Blackmon and Gordon) and neither of them will be suiting up on Sundays this year. Who knows? Maybe never again. Just think: If they would have just beaten their wives or girlfriends instead of doing drugs & alcohol, they'd be playing football this year.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 10:18 AM) Counting on those guys is just like a Sox fan expecting anything out of Micker Zapata. High school arms are notoriously difficult to project. Keep in mind, Straily's gone through something of an Erik Johnson season of his own. His velocity has mysteriously dipped from the 90's to around 88. Until they show the ability or willingness to sign/trade for/acquire one of the BIG FOUR (Scherzer/Lester/Shields/Price), nobody's going to buy into the Cubs Kool Aid. If you subtract Danks from the Sox rotation, they're in virtually the same place payroll-wise, but I'm sure the White Sox aren't going to be willing to give up a $100+ million contract to one of those four pitchers regardless. No it's really not. It's the same as a Sox fan expecting anything out of Tyler Danish and Spencer Adams. The Cubs have guys like Eloy Jimenez and Gleiber Torres that you could compare to Micker Adolfo but I never did that.
  9. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) funny seriously does anyone really think we can trade dunn for anybody viable? I say let him stay, and leave when his contract is up. I think he has done all he can do esp as a clubhouse presence. Yes. Dunn will get you a decent prospect in return if you eat the contract. I'm guessing the Sox will deal him for for two high upside types in A ball that are in the teens of someone's system and take the salary relief though. Dunn can help a playoff contender. Not sure why people think he can't.
  10. Lots of real stupid going on in this thread. I don't understand it. The Cubs have like a $30 million payroll. I think they will spend a little this offseason and you will see Bryant, Baez, Alcantara, and probably even Russell at some point next season. The Cubs don't have any pitching thing is false as well. They don't have immediate front of the rotation pitching. They have a ton opt depth though. The Cubs don't have a Carlos Rodon but I'd argue that they have more pitching depth than the White Sox do in their system. The Cubs already had : CJ Edwards, Pierce Johnson, Duane Underwood, Kyle Hendricks, Paul Blackburn, and Tyler Skulina to name a few. In the draft they added: Stinnett, Dylan Cease, Carson Sands, and Justin Steele. They also have a couple late inning type relievers in Arodys Vizcaino and Armando Rivero at AAA Iowa. Not to mention the young bullpen arms in their ML bullpen. The big name hitting prospects are the reason why they have the #1 system in baseball but the pitching in the system is underrated in my opinion.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 03:30 PM) Any contender that wants Dunn will not be a contender much longer after acquiring him. He'll be a Sox the remainder of the season IMO. This comment makes me want to go all taylorStSox on you but I like reading the site too much.
  12. Pretty good Trade Analysis by Fangraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/cubs-athlet...billy-mckinney/
  13. I love all the hate in this thread haha. What an excellent trade by the Cubs. When you can get an Addison Russell for guys that won't be in the plans moving forward, it's just an excellent move. I can't believe Oakland moved him but they are probably the AL favorites now. McKinney is a nice get too. The Cubs easily have the #1 farm system in baseball.
  14. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) At that price, he is definitely worth the price to be the primarily back-up to both Taj and Jo. The team would definitely be better, but still does not solve the main issue of wing scoring. Maybe McDermott can fill some of the void but you would definitely need another piece. Haha Gasol would not be "backing up" Taj. SunTimes reported that if Bulls sign Gasol, he will start.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) If the Bulls sign him they can't trade him for 30 days. So that's some more cap space they don't have for Melo. Not really. Melo has to be acquired through a Sign and Trade. The Bulls could then sign Mirotic with the Mid-Level Exception. You are right though that they couldn't sign Mirotic and Melo outright.

  17. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) We better have a plan with this $1.6M left. Absolutely awful if we don't even spend half the money we were alloted. Yankees signed the #7 prospect Jonathan Amundary for $1.5M. Would have been great to snag that guy up. I think it's easy to look at Jesse Sanchez or Ben Badler's lists and assume the White Sox didn't do a good job. It's a bit shortsighted though. We don't know. None of us do. The kids are like 16 and from different countries. Maybe the White Sox like Nunez and Alfaro better than they like some of the perceived higher-rated guys. I hope that the White Sox spend their entire International Pool. But as far as who they sign, doesn't really matter in my opinion because none of us know either way.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 11:52 AM) Just remember - it isn't just Carmelo is either all about the money or not at all about the money. Each aspect of changing teams has a price. Winning is worth a certain amount of lost earnings, moving his family nullifies a certain amount of the benefits of winning, etc. He could reject the Bulls for their inability to make a max offer without him being greedy. If max is 4/96 and we offer 4/64, his turning us down does not mean that it was 4/96 or nothing. In other news, I've been impressed with Melo in this process. When he left Denver, I saw him as a big baby who strong-armed his way out of town. Throughout the entire mess in NY, Melo has been quiet about his intentions and likely dissatisfaction with the Knicks. He hasn't been making public evaluations of each suitor. By all accounts, he has been incredibly good at keeping his private thoughts out of the rumor mill. Every rumor is "NBA executives think" or "people who are friends of Melo but haven't spoken to him in months believe." It has been stated that Melo wants Taj Gibson to remain on the Bulls. If that is the case, about $70 million is the best the Bulls can do. Now if Melo wants more $$, I'm sure that the Bulls would trade Taj Gibson and sign Melo for the $$. He can't have both though. He can't want more $$ and want the Bulls to keep Taj. Doesn't make sense.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 07:05 PM) Sounds like Boykin to Notre Dame. Damnit Yeah I thought he may go to Michigan but apparently not.
  20. Have we all stopped reading the reports on Carmelo? Some of it just doesn't make any sense. Yesterday on twitter, former NBA PG Kenny Anderson said that Melo wasn't happy with Bulls offer and would be going back to NY. I tweeted back and forth with Anderson and I asked him if Carmelo wanted Taj to stay. Anderson said Yes. I explained to him that if Taj stays, Melo will have to take something resembling like a 4 year $70 million deal. He said and that's the issue. So what is it? He can't have Taj Gibson and more $$. It just doesn't make any sense. He's probably going back to New York but when he does I hope he doesn't talk about wanting to win at the podium.
  21. QUOTE (Boogua @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) Genius? Absolutely not. My guess is you haven't been following the NBA all that long if you didn't get the reference. Well, in the summer of 2010 Lebron James decided to team up with two other top 5 to top 10 players in the NBA. One of those top 5 players had been with the team already and had won a championship as the man. That was when the whole "ring chaser" thing started. I didn't come up with it on my own, unfortunately. Right but it's stupid. I don't think the guy can be classified as a ring chaser if he's the best player on the team. Basically any team that Lebron goes to becomes a title contender. I think a ring chaser is like what Karl Malone did joining the Lakers or even Ray Allen on the current Heat teams.
  22. QUOTE (Boogua @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 09:08 AM) Losing out on Lowry and/or Gortat kind of limits their options on adding difference makers in this FA class, assuming they can't get Melo. The Heat's time might be done, so I'm curious what the ring chaser ends up doing. Who is the ring chaser? Is that some genius dig at Lebron? I'm very confused.
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) Bowman loves himself some mediocre D depth Mediocre is too strong a word. If the Hawks see him in Chicago, something went wrong.
  24. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) I don't think this has been mentioned.... NBA trade machine says we have a 2M trade exception from the Deng trade and another 1M from the Teague trade....If I'm correct on how those work, that's another 3M to add into a S&T for Melo. I think the Bulls used the $2 million trade exemption for Anthony randolph.
  25. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) WSJ reported that some in Knicks organization believe Boozer makes a lot of sense and can be a useful chip in a Love deal. NYDailyNews had a report that the Bulls pitch included both Taj & Jimmy Butler as being key points to the Bulls roster being title ready. This would be significant as the report went on to indicate that Melo is on board and understands the Bulls should retain those players and has learned from the Denver trade to Knicks (which ultimately led to Knicks being gutted). Seems like there is at least some real smoke about him seriously considering taking less money. That would be awesome. I'd love to keep Jimmy B and Taj and get Melo. Note: Obviously, if Melo says he wants to come here, I would ship Taj/Jimmy B for Melo if need be, but am hopeful they can work things out to really have this roster set. All indications have been that Butler wasn't really involved in process. To sign Melo outright, Butler has to go. That get hims close to $18 million per year with Jimmy, Dunleavy, Snell, and Boozer gone. I would be surprised if Butler and Melo are both on the Bulls next year.
