QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) Interesting why? Anywhere in the 5-10 range seems very reasonable to me. Actually #7 is exactly where I have him on my list at the moment. Also I like Jacob May getting into the top 10. Currently I have him at #11 and am very interested to see how he does this season. I guess I just value ceiling more than most people. I also don't think Jose Abreu should be considered a prospect though.

Baseball America released their list of Top 30 White Sox prospects today. I don't have the entire transcript and I'm old school and still purchase the Prospect Handbook anyway, but this is tweet is interesting from Daryl Van Schouwen. Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 3m #WhiteSox top prospects, per Baseball America: 1 Abreu 2 EJohnson 3 Anderson 4 Davidson 5 Semien 6 MJohnson 7 Hawkins 8Thompson 9Beck 10 May Having Hawkins at #7 is very interesting.

Dan Hayes @DanHayesCSN 2m #WhiteSox have claimed LHP Eric Surkamp off waivers from SF Giants. But they also lost Brent Morel to #BlueJays on waivers. Someone create the Brent Morel Appreciation Thread

Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson
Y2Jimmy0 replied to dayan024's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Not sure if this was already posted but it's pretty funny. Matt Davidson was doing an interview with Chris Rose and Kevin Millar and Reed happened to be in the background working out. Pretty funny stuff. -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 22, 2013 -> 01:16 AM) My niece and nephew both have Downs Syndrome, so I didn't like it. But I'm not a mod here and I am not going to report it either. I can't force people to not make jokes about mentally challenged people, only distance myself from them. Not that this is what I want to turn this thread into but are they both from the same family? Like did your brother or sister happen to have 2 children with Down Syndrome or is it different parents? Just curious because you don't see it that often.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 02:30 AM) Trea Turner needs to have a great season, but not so great that he goes 2. I hope he has a great season so that he goes #2. That would ensure that the Sox could draft Jeff Hoffman. Talk about a nasty rotation.

Like some others have stated, Nate Jones should be the closer. Hope that pitches awesome and that you can them deal him for a nice haul with some controlled years left. I like Nate Jones. I think Daniel Webb is the closer of the future though and I like selling high on relievers. That would be my goal with Jones.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) I would guess Dunn is sent packing. His presence represents the recent failures of the team, and without his departure, I feel like the FO can't truly sell this team as a fresh look...to the majority of the fanbase. The same fan base that doesn't watch the team play in person? I wouldn't be making moves to appease the fan base because fans are generally stupid. I don't expect Dunn to be gone. Nobody is going to take Dunn's entire salary and it doesn't make sense to pay part of the contract to get a C rated prospect in return. In my opinion, the only option is to let Dunn play in the first half and hope that he hits enough homers to deal him at the deadline. It's not like he's blocking someone.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 12:17 PM) Yeah, that's not funny. I thought we would make it through the whole thread without seeing this. Ehh. I am a Special Education teacher and I'm not really offended. It is what it is though.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) Wait...WHAT? Justin Upton.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:37 AM) Are you implying another bullpen move? I don't doubt it. I think we need at least one more bullpen arm I would probably wait for the next bullpen move though. There is a chance that they can sign someone pretty cheap. There are a lot of guys with closing experience who are going to have to settle most likely (Hanrahan, Bailey, Madson, just to name a few)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) Gotta be catcher. You would think that is the biggest need area, but maybe it's someone like Nick Franklin in Seattle. Seattle has a logjam that they have to fix soon. It was said that many teams were interested in Ackley and Franklin. Time will tell I guess.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:24 AM) Still think there is another move coming. Like at some point today? Or just in the near future? Thanks for the info. I kind of assumed there may be a few more moves in general.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) We're aimed at the future with an eye towards being digestible, not-vomitous-bad in the present And Scott Downs and Matt Lindstrom are both guys that can be dealt at the trade deadline to a contending team.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 10:51 AM) Heath seems the likeliest to go. He definitely does. Isn't McDade still on the roster too for some reason?

2013-14 off season player movement thread

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 09:15 AM) Thats my point, Choo cannot go to the Yankees and say "Well, someone out there is going to offer me more than you" because more than likely, that isnt true. Cano could go to the Mariners and say "weeeeell the yankees are going to offer me 25 million more" and it would be believable. If I were the Yankees I would go hardline on Boras/Choo. 7/140, take it or leave it. That deal was offered before Beltran signed. They wouldn't do that anymore. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) The only tweets regarding Downs to the Sox are that Blake Harrison and SoxNet asking if there is anything to it. He definitely seems like the right guy though. It's most likely true. That guy most likely knows Downs or someone that would know. He'd have no reason to make up the White Sox as the connecting team, in my opinion. Nice signing. Hopefully, it's a 1 year deal with an option and he can be traded at the trade deadline.

Is Kyle Skipworth really bad? He was just DFA'd by the Marlins. Was the #6 overall pick a few years back.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) It might be a deeper draft, but last year had 3 guys that all were deserving of being the first pick in the draft. This year, it would be great if another 2 or 3 can show they're worthy of that recognition. None of those guys would go #1 in this year's draft though.

It's the beat writers planting the platoon story. The Sox obviously want to move De Aza and start Viciedo in LF. They are talking about the platoon so it appears that White Sox would be comfortable keeping him. It's classic posturing. In this case it doesn't really matter though. I don't think they will get more for De Aza just by pretending that they'd like to keep him.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:23 AM) Look guys...we're not getting back anything useful for Dunn. If we chip in $10 million+ we might get back some no-name A-baller and that's going to require the Sox to chip in $10 million+. That's just how it's going to be. For crying out loud we signed an extra DH because we didn't feel Adam Dunn had that firm of a grasp on that position even. That's not why an "Extra DH" was signed. Konerko was signed because he the owner didn't let his baseball people do their jobs in this instance. JR said Konerko could come back and since he wanted to come back, he's back. It has nothing to do with Dunn or anyone else regardless of what the team or media says. Hahn had his arms tied behind his back.
-
Eating Adam Dunn's $$ and trading him for nothing is a mistake. Unless someone is going to pick up the entire salary they just roll with Dunn for this season. I would gamble on him having 20-25 homers by the trade deadline and at that point you can dump the back end of the contract and get a piece or 2. There is no reason for the Sox to eat $$ on the Dunn deal and get nothing of substance in return. He's not blocking anyone that is ready to play and giving PK his at bats would be really stupid.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 05:46 AM) That is a very compelling argument, with which I totally agree. I don't know why people don't concur. Everyone talks about what a "crap shoot" the baseball amateur draft is, and then they proceed to insist that "you take the best available talent". "Best talent" based upon what exactly? Of course, it will be a while before some of the draftees would be ready to be added to the roster, and it's true that the roster could look very different. However, why continue to stock pile a particular position, when you might have a choice to add a player where there is an obvious dearth of future candidates in your organization? As long as there is no clear consensus as to who is the third best talent in the draft, why not pick one of the top candidates based, at least in part, upon perceived needs? Best talent based upon your draft board. Teams have a giant board and put the players in order based on their scouting methods. Teams should then trust their board and pick the top guy on it. While I would love another high ceiling position player at #3, if Jeff Hoffman is available the Sox probably have to take him. I understand what you are saying but it's not the NFL or the NBA. In baseball, it is imperative to stock your system with as much talent as possible. One organizational goal could be to stockpile middle infield prospects for example. Let's say for argument's sake that the Sox were picking 9th in the draft. Lets also say that the top 2 middle infield guys are already off the board. Instead of taking the 3rd best middle infield prospect at #9, it would be better to take the best 1B that happens to still be on the board. It's about value and stocking the system with as much of it as possible. Now in the later rounds, drafting for need absolutely happens.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 11:28 PM) Did he say anything that we all already don't know? Well I hadn't heard the Keppinger stuff.

QUOTE (professa @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 11:02 PM) Didn't catch that, thanks for pointing that out. Still would probably cost Q to get a guy like that which IMO is not worth it, rather just take Alex Jackson in this upcoming draft and go with stop gaps until then. Jackson is a HS player and will most likely require 3 years in minors. He also probably wont play catcher in the big leagues.
