These are the times that I wish KW was in charge of a different organization. He loves the Arizona Fall League and would trade the Sox something pretty good after salivating over Mitchell's play out there.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) $40? That's how much Frank Thomas used to cost. My how time flies. Dean's Dugout in Naperville has these frequently too. Phegley and Garcia will both be there soon.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 08:39 PM) Like with Viciedo and Puig? They were in to the very last second on both of those guys. Cespedes, to a lesser extent. The only one they weren't pursuing hard was Soler. That's not true. Gammons tweeted last year that Sox bid of upwards of $25 million was right there with Atlanta competing for the 2nd highest bid on Soler.
-
QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) Damn. Nobody has Cespedes going to Oakland. You just never know.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 4, 2013 -> 02:39 PM) And now the Marlins: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/10/marl...riel-abreu.html I didn't see this Scot Gregor article about the Sox interest in Abreu posted yet. Here it is. http://www.dailyherald.com/article/2013100...?interstitial=1

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 07:41 AM) WTF is this post? That's all we've BEEN talking about in here. Why wouldn't you talk about it? It was just in reference to past threads. A couple of posters wanted the team to lose more so that this pick could easily be obtained. Others believed that the thought process was crazy. People started arguing and 2 threads were closed relating to the topic. That's all I am saying. Just didn't want to get another thread shutdown.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 28, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) What a joke. What should Sweum be fired for? For not losing enough? It's not a joke. Girardi is the better manager and the better choice at this time. Not too surprising actually.
-
Can we talk about the Sox having the 3rd pick now? Still too soon? I wanted to check with everyone before bringing it up again because of the thin skin around here.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 28, 2013 -> 12:27 PM) I believe Bucket mentioned earlier in the thread that the Sox front office were looking heavy into Pence this off season. Well Heyman just tweeted that Pence and the Giants are close to a deal near 90 million. 5 year deal for 90 million. Thoughts? Would you give Choo 5/90? God no. He'd be a $90 million platoon player now.
-
Wow that is crazy money for Hunter Pence. I bet someone gives Choo $100 million now and he's basically a platoon player. I think Sox look into Abreu and not much else. Hahn made it pretty clear yesterday that going nuts in free agency should not and will not be the plan.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 10:10 PM) Great post. Well, if there are any Scioscia lovers out there, he's going to be available. I'm more a Francona guy than Scioscia, but do we want to wait and pass on a guy like Scioscia? I really don't want some unproven bench coach as Sox next manager. I'd prefer more of an experienced manager next time. I think LaRussa's stupid for not wanting to manage the Sox, as long as his health is good. What's he doing in retirement that's more fun than spending every day at the ballpark? I'd be fine with Scioscia actually. It's a bit off topic but I think the Cubs are about to make some news by firing Sveum and getting Girardi to manage the Cubs.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 04:26 PM) Heh what are people's beef with Kepp? A few months back, Laurence Holmes mentioned how Keppinger is a guy that they need to get out of the clubhouse. He didn't elaborate much at all. He was saying that he was a bad guy that the team didn't like very much.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:36 AM) Jackson would be a great pick. Does anyone know what the chances are that he signs? Hasn't he signed a letter of intent to go to Oregon? Most of the "prospect people" in the media talk about him as if he will be a top 5 pick. If his commitment was that solid I think it would get brought up more. I would imagine that he and Gatewood will both sign.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 11:43 PM) Why does Robin all of a sudden want to manage forever? If his stance has completely changed, my guess is he'll sign that multi-year extension if it's offered again this offseason. If we suck defensively and on the basepaths again next year, Robin should be on the hotseat. He probably won't be, though, cause Sox are not going to be in the news much next season if we are out of it in May. My guess is attendance also will take a big hit this time if we suck a second consecutive season. p.s. To those of you who get mad when I bring up how expensive it is to go to a game, the current edition of ESPN the Mag has an article on best/worst franchises. The BEST FRANCHISES currently (Memphis Grizzlies is No. 1) are ones with very cheap season ticket prices and food prices. ESPN said surveys say AFFORDABILITY is huge now with fans. Fans don't want to be robbed at their sports venues. Finally, I'll be at the United Center this year to watch Duke play Kansas in men's college basketball and Kentucky play Michigan State. I have to drive a car to the United Center and not take public transportation. Do you think a.) I'll be mugged or b.) my car will be damaged/stolen? I have to stay a while after the game waiting for a friend who works at the UC. Will I be mugged going back to my vehicle? Thank u for all the answers. Is this is a serious question? Why would you get mugged? The "dangerous" Chicago is so overblown. It's only like 3 neighborhoods and it's between gang members. The media lies and says gun violence instead of gang violence and people like you think you can't make it to a Bulls game. Oh boy.

If you bought tickets online, you should check your email....

QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 12:51 PM) Worth it. I received this email as well. I don't think I'll be going back out even for free though. Between coaching HS football and NFL Sundays I don't really have time for baseball. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 10:03 PM) Who tipped over??? I am thinking it has to be Johnny and Frank. I love they perfectly didn't show any of the 4 in next week's preview. Bastards.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) Will you guys be hoping for Kolek if he goes down early in the year with a shoulder injury? I know we fantasize about picks, but speculating on potential draft picks in September is about as silly as speculating on a major league roster for 2015. Kolek is a HS pitcher. If they go pitcher that high I think it'd be a college arm. They could go HS bat though. I really like Alex Jackson.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 10:00 AM) Is it more negative than the drop off of his offense? I don't think his offense is that big of a drop as the DH though is it? He cannot play anywhere on defense. It destroys his value. If he hits 35-40 bombs, walks close to 100 times and strikes out a ton it is fine at DH. At 1B, his defense is so bad that he's a negative WAR player.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) How have his numbers been as a DH? I thought someone mentioned he's hit much better for us while playing 1B. Doesn't matter though. He offers a negative defensive value. Is there the Sox would sign McCann and Abreu and just keep Dunn too for a year? Now that's some thump. Then Dunn could definitely hit 6th.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2013 -> 10:01 AM) Wasn't Grilli a mid 90's guy back then? Either way the drafted him as a starter, not reliever. There was a great SI column about Grilli some months ago. He just basically talked about how he was expected to pitch multiple innings and needed to throw 3-4 pitches. He just couldn't sustain it and always wore down. He said a couple of years ago he decided to just go fastball-slider only and he increased MPH on the fastball. Once he decided to be a closer he was much more successful.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2013 -> 04:07 PM) I think Kepp/Gillaspie would be one of the worst 3B combos in baseball, befitting our 60-win team. Could be, but I don't think so. Keppinger is having an outlier of a year. Gillaspie is actually good against RHP. The problem is, Would the manager only play Keppinger vs LHP and Gillaspie vs RHP? If Ventura did this and they upgraded in other spots, it would be fine. If he plays Keppinger 55-65 games vs RHP and Gillaspie in a number of games against LHP he would just be setting both players up to fail.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 17, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) Mad Men will end in the Breaking Bad way. 7 episodes in 2014, last 7 in 2015. This is most likely done so that they can win Emmy's. Breaking Bad's Final Season will be eligible for next year's 2014 Emmy's along with the 1st 7 episodes of Mad Men's Final Season. In 2015 however, the Final 7 episodes of Mad Men will be available to win awards with no Breaking Bad from the same network to compete against. I hate it. I get it though.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 17, 2013 -> 10:08 PM) Yep. If the Sox win tonight, our magic number stays 9, and the Cubs will be 14. Heck, the Sox could drop to 5th. Sox are still "3 games up" on the Cubs for the 3rd pick. Sox have 11 games left. 5-6 probably gets them pick #3.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 10:01 AM) I think there is a problem identifying guys who are going to hit. They have developed pitching just fine, but you would think if they had drafted guys who could or would hit, considering how they have pawned off prospects on other teams, at least a couple of them over the years would have some success. I understand they like the toolsy guys who they hope to develop, but almost all their top hitting prospects since Crede and Rowand and Jeremy Reed have been huge swing and miss ridiculously high strikeout rate guys who really don't offset that with a ton of homers and a good OBP. It's almost as if they draft the same player year after year and hope this time it will be different. I'd like to see them just one draft, concentrate on baseball players the first several rounds, not athletes. Being incredibly fast or strong does you no good if you can't hit the ball, or lay off pitches out of the strike zone, or can get a decent jump. You are right. There is always a place for super athletic, toolsy players. The problem was that KW wanted athletic players and JR did not want to spend money on the draft. In turn, the Sox end up with players like Mitchell, Walker, and Thompson because of it.
