  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:51 AM) Again, with wins and losses, what is the difference, if, indeed, Konerko takes Keppinger's spot. You are going on and on about Jeff Keppinger now. Don't ruin your reputation on Jeff Keppinger. Dick, would you be in favor of the Sox just cutting Keppinger and eating the salary?
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 08:33 AM) Do they really believe this is going to sell any more season tickets or keep existing season ticket holders in the fold? To the tune of a $2.5 million difference? (And possibly more, if it forces Dunn or Keppinger off the roster to the cost of an additional $4-8 million.) Who do you mean by "they"? Rick Hahn is lying right now. He has to lie. You all know that Rick Hahn was praying to whatever god he believes in that PK would retire. Hahn knows that this is not the best alternative but Reinsdorf was holding a spot for Konerko. What is Hahn supposed to say now? This is a total JR move. But your overall premise is correct caulfield. It will not sell any more tickets. While PK has been a very good player for a long time, he's never been Frank Thomas. I used to attend games "to see" Frank Thomas play. I may go to a game to watch "Chris Sale Pitch". I have never once gone to a game because Paulie is on the team. That's overblown. Sox fans don't care about that. They want to win. It's like the old Seinfeld routine that talks about how we are all just rooting for laundry. In this sense, for most of us, it's absolutely true.
  3. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) I think it's fair to say Chris Sale should have the highest trade value of any pitcher in baseball right now. With that contract this is absolutely true.
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:02 AM) This would make more sense if we didn't have Dunn. Maybe Konerko is going to play a little 3B and C. No it wouldn't. They would be way too right handed. It doesn't make sense either way. Paulie is done.
  5. Well I was looking forward to opening day. This is the type of nonsense that could cause me to not attend any games. It's just dumb. Just f***ing retire already. It makes absolutely zero sense for an AL team with limited bench spots.
  6. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 04:45 PM) Gut feeling, the Sox were interested in Granderson for 2 years, but not 3. And he'll get three from somebody. Same thing with Salty. Why though? I think The Sox interest in Granderson ended the day he received a Qualifying Offer.
  7. QUOTE (midway @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 04:26 PM) OMG...even the Astros are busy getting Dexter Fowler.....didn't we need a CF!!! This is depressing watching everyone else doing something...THE ASTROS, let's get going Hahn!!!! Go take a look at Fowler's numbers away from Coors. Yikes.
  8. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) Grandal posted an .863 OPS in '12 with half his games at Petco Park. In 60 games in '12 he posted 2.7 WAR. the Sox were rumored to be very interested in Grandal during that year's draft time. Grandal would be a pretty significant addition. It would take a pretty good return but it's something that I would be very excited about.
  9. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) I don't think it's out of the question that Flowers ends up traded, and Phegley goes to Charlotte. PLenty of time. There isn't much else for Phegley to prove in Charlotte. Flowers gets dealt. Lobaton and Phegley split time in Chicago.
  10. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) Does Hahn really think we can compete with this roster with an 80 million dollar payroll. No. Competing is not the plan. Not sure why people are surprised by this.
  11. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) Wow, I am not obsessed with Holmberg like everyone else around here but if the Reds made the trade 1-for-1 (Hannigan-for-Holmberg) you have to think that is good value for the catcher. It seems as if Arizona isn't receiving any players back either. They must really be hurting for $$. I would imagine it's Hanigan to TB with the reported new deal. Holmberg to Cincinnati. Heath Bell to TB with Cincinnati picking up the tab. Is that enough?
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 12:43 PM) Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 25m Sources: Oakland not done wheeling and dealing. At least one trade is nearing completion, may be more to come. Multiple reports saying that this deal is OF prospect Michael Choice to Texas and OF Craig Gentry to Oakland. I bet Choice is part of package that will be used to acquire David Price. Just a hunch.
  13. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 07:02 AM) Both of those things happened to me, so yeah. But back to your hate fest & enjoy the free swinging garbage back there. AJ isn't a free swinger?
  14. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 28, 2013 -> 11:52 PM) I actually meant for major league players. I actually would not be surprised to see Quintana locked up for a sweetheart club deal similar to what Floyd signed in the past. Something that buys out his arb years and maybe adds options to the end.
  15. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 22, 2013 -> 07:19 PM) As of right now I hope kolek is our guy. Watched video of him and he's impressive to say the least! Wicked slider and a good curve ball when he has a feel for it. I think I'd still be excited about it in June but man HS pitching that high scares the hell out of me.
  16. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 22, 2013 -> 03:42 PM) Tavares, Adams or Craig. Who's the odd man out? Craig.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 22, 2013 -> 01:43 PM) Haha that's ONE way to look at it, I guess. You should be an agent The thing is though, that the latter years of the contract are the ones that are crappy. You are essentially "loaned" surplus value up front that you pay back at a fixed rate, even when it's an overpay. So the Tigers got a disproportionately high amount of the value of Fielder compared to what they ultimately paid. Whatever the Tigers have to do to replace Kinsler will presumably NOT be taking on the dregs portion of a player's performance as it would be with Fielder. So even if they spend the same amount of money, by spending it on the front half of a contract twice, they come out ahead. The back end of that deal will be bad but if Prince Fielder has 3-4 great seasons in which Texas wins a WS in one of those seasons, it's probably worth it. I have this argument about Dunn all the time. Fielder is overpaid but there aren't many LH hitters with 35-40 HR power anymore.
  18. QUOTE (dayan024 @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) Rule 5 draft top players Says Whitesox might draft Astros Catcher Carlos Perez #3 overall Marco Paddy was the top scout in the Blue Jays system when Carlos Perez signed as a 19 year old.
  19. If the Sox think that Marcus Semien can play SS, then I would love for the Sox to try and get Piscotty or Carson Kelly from STL. Those are the types. The Sox can't get Carlos Martinez I don't think and I am not that interested in Kolten Wong.
  20. I will go with Flowers, De Aza, and Ramirez on different teams.
  21. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) Has Konerko ever been more talented than Dunn? Seriously. I am glad someone else said it. To answer your question: No. Dunn has always been the more productive player. I understand why White Sox fans don't like Dunn but he was one of the most consistent players in the game for like an 8 year stretch before joining the Sox.
  22. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 12:04 PM) C'mon man. If you look at it through the casual fan's eye it makes sense. The casual fan absolutely hates Dunn with a passion. They don't say "Oh 30 hrs at the end of the year, nice." You always hear something like "that motherf***er strikes out or fails every time I see him bat" or "why the f*** can't he get over his self-quoted 'stupid, stubborn ways' and learn to hit the baseball away from the shift." This is the casual fan. Not my opinion but what you hear on the streets, at the game, at backyard bbqs, playing bags etc. How can you pretend this line of thinking isn't everywhere in Chicago? It doesn't make sense on any level? That's ludicrous man when you know damn well the city generally despises him more than any Sox I can think of in recent memory. I'd even try to argue Dunn's presence results in tickets not being sold. It's still illogical. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) Yes, but if you weren't earmarking that for the pick and going to go cheap on that pick just to spread that amount around later, it even further decreases it's value, at least player-wise. So I take it pretty much a wash since you wouldn't be paying that player anyway. I can understand a team walking away from signing a free agent because they would lose their first round pick. But not solely because they lose the 2nd rounder. IMO, the Sox thought they could get Granderson fairly reasonably earlier, but with the QO out there, they probably realize they could not. I also think they put Granderson's worth at more than just his numbers. I think he was/is the type of veteran they would like influencing the young guys. Exactly. The Sox have roughly $9.5 million for the draft. If that pick is worth $1.4 million our whatever it is, you lose the ability to spend that money. That really hurts the Sox chances of going under slot in Round 2 or 3 and grabbing a lot of wildcard over slot guys in later rounds. It just hurts the overall flexibility and Granderson's impact would not justify the move in my opinion.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 16, 2013 -> 12:08 AM) The guy struck out way too much. Hahn gets it, though. Granderson strikes out more…..
  25. QUOTE (toasty @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 10:46 PM) I actually think that if the Sox could get some kind of return for Dunn, while paying a bit, there actually is indeed a good fit for AJ. He could be used as DH if not catching. LH bat and decent contact hitter. not to mention the impact on the clubhouse and fans. Not sure why you insist he cannot come back. It's not necessarily a high possibility, but stranger things have happened. Ventura and AJ did not get along very well during AJ's final season in Chicago. He questioned RV's authority on multiple accounts according to reports from soon after AJ left town. I don't think Robin would be on board with AJ returning and some of his teammates would most likely feel the same way. I think the impact on the clubhouse would be a negative one.
