  1. QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 01:01 PM) Brandon Brennan RHP The guys on MLB.com really liked Brennan. Said he sits 93-94 and needs refinement on the change and slider but has upside as a quality starter if he does so.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) I can't see the Sox paying that kind of coin to a guy with a real chance at losing two years of development. Yeah. Unless Ventura has a ton of influence you are probably right on. It's just not a move they'd typically make. At #13 or #48.
  3. QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 12:36 PM) Giolito came out of the chute in December and January throwing 95-99 mph and showing off a long-toss regimen that "makes Trevor Bauer's long toss look like kid stuff," in the words of one scout. He pitched between 92-99 through February, sitting comfortably at 94-96. Then he sprained his ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow in early March, ending his season and turning him into something of a wild card for the draft. Doctors worked with him on strengthening target areas during his rehabilitation, and he started throwing on flat ground by early May, with a plan to start throwing from 90 and 120 feet in the weeks leading up to the draft. May need Tommy John Surgery down the road. Robin Ventura does know him well. It has been rumored that he wants to go pro. Keith Law has stated that if were running the Astros, he would take him #1 overall. It's worth a shot at #48. I'd even do it at #13 if they knew for sure that he'd sign. I am always willing to roll the dice on a future ace. Many have clamored for Stroman and I like him too. But even if Giolito has arm surgery, his innings as a starter will be much more valuable than if Stroman is a career reliever. The Sox will probably take Heaney or Wacha and make this a moot point anyway though.
  4. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 2, 2012 -> 08:46 AM) No. Byron Buxton not Victor Roache. And there were never really any concrete links to Roache. Just one or two super early draft projections with no sourced information. Any chance Roache is still available at pick #48? #13 is way too high for him but getting him at #48 would be very nice.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 03:24 PM) So KW should have some blamed removed from him for some of the past drafts? I, for one, have never totally blamed Kenny for the draft inefficiencies. Much more of the blame should be on Reinsdorf, but there are specific examples ( Royce Ring in Round 1, Mitchell over Trout a few years back that could fall on KW. The thought process that says "never in anyway should we use resources on amateur talent, but I will shell out funds for the rest of Juan Pierre's contract" is and always will be completely asanine to me.
  6. What Callis really hammered was JR-Kenny conundrum in their difference in philosophy. He said that Kenny Williams likes high impact, boom or bust type, toolsy players. But he said that Reinsdorf is not willing to spend money in the draft. The problem is that those type players are not cheap and in turn you end up with Keenyn Walker and Soptic type players.
  7. Hopefully, Viciedo stays in the 5 hole for the game tonight.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 17, 2012 -> 11:47 AM) Absolutely not. Why trade Thornton for an old expensive 3b on the decline with back problems? Trade him for prospects and save the money. Let me rephrase: I did say that I would rather trade Thornton for a promising young piece than for Youkilis. I don't think anyone is giving up anything for Thornton though unless the Sox pick up the contract. Something JR will not do. If Kenny Williams thinks there is an outside shot at winning the division, Youkilis helps the Sox more this year than Thornton does in my opinion. I, However, like most of you do not think the Sox will ultimately compete this year, which makes a Youkilis-Thornton trade a moot point.
  9. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 17, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) White Sox make this deal if they can. The Red Sox would have to eat some money regardless, and it wouldn't be hard to get the cash to be even considering Thornton has ~$10m left total guaranteed, and Youk has ~$13m total guaranteed with buyout. White Sox probably have to include a PTBNL or "live arm." You're trading a mid 30's guy at a position of depth for a mid 30's guy at a position of weakness -- it's a wash in terms of "rebuilding" because the money and age is similar, it just flat out makes you better. Morel sucks and is still young. All you're doing is giving him one year to play as a bench guy, because Youk gets bought out. If the deal is Youkilis for Thornton I think everyone would make it. Thornton gets behind in the count, he has one pitch now, and it's a straight fastball that hitters sit on. Youkilis even bad would provide an upgrade in the lineup. But if the Sox indeed decide to sell off parts, they may be able to get a package of young players for Thornton, which would be better than adding Youk.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 17, 2012 -> 09:24 AM) If they judge it's the case that having a kid struggle at the big league level playing through a back injury is the right move, then that's their call...they're the ones who have to deal with replacing him if he fails. If they think they can't fix him at the big league level, then either he ought to be on the DL or playing every day at Charlotte. I wanted to give Morel a chance for the entire season but he has a .396 OPS. I had to look multiple times to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. That is tough to do. There really is not another 3B option but at least if he went to AAA he may regain some semblance of confidence.
  11. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:26 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3921116.story Go for it Sox. Take whomever you think will be the BPA, age be damned. Well, there is the link to Matt Smoral. Laumann's kid played with him. So they should be pretty familiar with him.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 16, 2012 -> 12:15 AM) Chicago White SoxRichie Shaffer, 3B, Clemson Shaffer has the most raw power of any college hitter in this class and has a very good chance of being a solid big league regular, but probably not a star. It'll be interesting to see if ownership allows the scouting department to spend up to the new, higher slot numbers, since they almost never exceeded the old figures. I've also heard them tied to Ohio prep lefty Matt Smoral. People on this board have mentioned Oklahoma State LH Andrew Heaney as a possibility as well as Marcus Stroman. Both guys are available at #13 in Keith Law's mock.
  13. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 10, 2012 -> 04:46 PM) BA's first mock. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft...12/2613371.html I'd be just fine with Hawkins or Smoral. Still hoping Stroman or Fried fall to the Sox. Isn't there a great chance that Stroman ends up as a hard-throwing bullpen guy? The White Sox cannot spend another pick on a guy like that. Courtney Hawkins or Fried would be awesome. Stryker Trahan would be very intriguing though.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 8, 2012 -> 04:15 PM) Things were going along swell until our closer blew a couple saves and Sox lost some games in excruciating fashion. Then the Sale thing sure seems to have finished the team off mentally, taking a dominant starter out of the rotation with the alternative pitchers a soft throwing stiff like Axelrod. A lot of people on here sure thought Dunn, Rios and Peavy rejuvenation in April would indeed let the team contend, especially with Detroit mediocre at the time. Sox tend to implode in the most dramatic ways that sends the team spiraling down. I thought Peavy, Rios, and Dunn bouncing back would give the Sox a shot at contending as well. Bullpen issues have been a problem like you've mentioned. But I think the biggest problem is just that the team OBP is awful, and the young players have just been so bad. Now, I am with you that they need to be playing the majority of the time still, but even if the overpriced guys perform, the White Sox just are not good enough with the number of bad players on the roster.
  15. Molina is heading back to Birmingham after allowing 6 runs on 9 hits in 4 innings for Charlotte.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) It does matter. I understand draft position, but to say it doesn't matter if the Sox win 88 games and miss the playoffs or lose 100 is beyond silly. And that's one man's opinion. Count me as not interested in being good enough to compete but not good enough to win the whole damn thing. If it were a team full of young players with promise then yes, obviously winning 88 games is better than being the worst team in baseball. But when you are the White Sox, with the worst minor league system in the game trying to win as many games as possible to hopefully finish 3rd does absolutely nothing to help the future of the franchise.
  17. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 8, 2012 -> 01:46 PM) People aren't coming to the park to see PK in late June if the team is 10 games out of first place. I for one have never gone to the park to see Paul Konerko. I used to go to SEE Frank. PK is not Frank. I will never believe that people go to the park to see Paul Konerko play and the 29th in MLB in attendance is proving that. So many people think that by trading away veterans it somehow s***s on the fans. It s***s on the stupid fans. And yes, during the rebuild, the park would be empty. But once the White Sox got consistently good again, those same fans would be back. That's the way it goes.
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 8, 2012 -> 12:45 PM) Just win, baby. If the Sox could have built on that great 10-6 start, even with this roster there would have been mega excitement in Chicago this summer. Instead, thanks the the annual meltdowns of our closers and passionless baseball at home, we're back to talking about shredding the roster to nothing, having five-10 years of 50-65 victories max in a total "rebuild," which would probably lead to the Sox moving from Chicago or being contracted. HAHA 50-65 wins a season? That's tough to do. But the bottom line is though that if they are going to miss the playoffs they may as well have the worst record in baseball. It does not matter. They could not "build" on their great 10-6 start because they are not that good. They have too many bad players on their team. That's generally what happens.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 8, 2012 -> 08:44 AM) I'm in favor of not panicking OOTP '13 style. We aren't winning anything this year. The most important thing we have to do this year is get a read on the kids in our organization to decide what to do with them. Are guys like Gordon, Dayan, Brent, Addison, Dylan, etc, every day major league ballplayers? Get them their reps and AB's. If someone comes along and blows away Kenny for one of the veterans that is one thing, but there is nothing to be gained as a franchise by freaking out on May 7 and having a fire sale. See, we actually agree on this. I think all of those guys need to be playing as well. I wish Viciedo was playing every day and not giving up time for Fukudome. I wish Reed was closing. My point was just that guys like Thornton, Ohman, Crain, Floyd, Peavy etc will not be on the roster the next time the Sox win a World Series. Meaning, they get dealt hopefully. The only things I was looking forward to this year were Reed closing, Sale starting, Viciedo playing every day, and what we could get in trade for our veterans.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) Driving off the rest of the fanbase isn't in the best long term interest of the franchise. So you are in favor of what exactly? The status quo? Keep everything the same and maybe hope that it gets better? That's insane.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) 32 posts, and this one of them... Ugh. The hangovers from Cinco de Mayo have barely faded. Quit worrying about meltdowns for a while. I am not hungover from Cinco de Mayo. It's just a general observation. How am I worrying about a meltdown? What I posted would be finally doing something in the best long term interests of the team finally.
  22. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 7, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) Does Kenny make it through the year? I don't know how KW can possibly make it through the year. I don't think it matters though. As bad as KW's minor league system is, most of that is on Reinsdorf for not spending in the draft and on the international market. I know that the new rules might help some of that but the way the White Sox do business has been a joke for a long time.
  23. QUOTE (daggins @ May 7, 2012 -> 02:28 PM) Probably late July. Though we did see the Padres already selling high on a reliever, and Jeff Luhnow is already openly talking about his trade chips. The Sox aren't as bad as those two teams but they could be in a year or so barring a major influx of new talent. Yeah, I know that it usually happens in late July. I feel like they could start earlier and possibly get more for some of their parts though. It is pointless to have Konerko and AJ and guys that still have value on this team.
  24. How soon before the White Sox start selling off parts? They cannot compete with this team. And even if they could hang around, they are not winning a title. In my opinion, in order to get good again they need to get really bad first. AJ, Thornton, Crain, Floyd, Ohman and Peavy are probabaly the most tradeable assets that the team has. I would be willing to trade anyone on the team. The Sox are 29th in attendance and that simple fact should prove that they can deal Konerko as well. If Sale is not going to be used as a starting pitcher, then he should be dealt as well. I know it takes two to tango and that it is early. I just hope this is the game plan for the coming months. This team is not fun to watch and is not going anywhere.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 08:42 AM) I can't imagine it will matter with this group, but worth noting. http://www.csnchicago.com/blog/whitesox-ta...mp;feedID=10338 I thought Ventura made it somewhat clear that he was leaning towards De Aza in CF and Rios in LF. This should be the outcome. JJ Stankevicz makes it sound like De Aza would be the LF being replaces by Lillibridge. This is not Ozzie managing the team anymore and I thought that an actual beat writer would know that De Aza is most likely the opening day CF.
