QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 08:34 PM) Veal with his 11 walks in 14 IP enters the game. Biggest disappointment? Blue Jays or Nationals? Angels? Match-up LH who can't get lefties out to hold the lead. .387 average by lefties against Donnie this year, lol. Indians' announcers just PR'ed that Gordon is a Gold Glove caliber 2B. (Good job, Hawkeroo!) If the offense and defense aren't already nightmares, we can undoubtedly add bullpen rebuilding woes to the off-season list of debate topics, haha. WTF

The good news with a possible Rios trade is we should be able to sign a free agent outfielder to replace him. I think Choo would fill a ton of needs for us and would be a huge upgrade over Rios. We should have the money, I'm just not sure if Hahn would want to commit a long-term contract to him.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 07:24 AM) Why are some people pretending it's some new untested approach to wait for the deadline to get the best offers coming in True, but I do think a Peavy decision will prior to his start. Guys like Rios & Ramirez will probably be last second deals if they get moved.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 06:44 AM) Keith Law speculated on BBTN that if he doesn't pitch or hardly pitches, we'll get 25K or something just to make it technically a trade with the commissioner's office Ok, that makes some sense.
-
So did we give up money in this deal? If so, I don't understand why we'd potentially get money back as part of the return. Maybe they mean international bonus money?
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:18 PM) I don't really like it in that case, no I'd happily take Hanson straight up for Rios. It's the exact type of deal I'm hoping for with Rios.

Semien now leads the Southern League in OPS. It's going to be very interesting to see where he ranks in the Southern League top prospects list.

I'm all for losses at this point, but a Phegley walkoff would be awesome.

QUOTE (mike65 @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) I don't think there is any doubt that the Cardinals are involved; even the lazy scribes in STL have said as much. What has always had me puzzled is how far Mozeliak would go to accomplish a trade. Cardinal fans are quite fond of the team's #1 farm system ranking. I think he likes the condition of the Cardinal minor leagues but he has a team that can win this year so I think he is torn. Mathey loves Kozma but I don't think Mo has ever felt that Kozma is a SS on a championship club. I like Matheny but sometimes Mo has to save him from himself. Matheny kept using Boggs and losing games until Mo had enough and sent Boggs to Memphis. It is the same with Kozma. The Cards would have to bring a high dollar SS before Matheny stops playing Kozma. Mo brought Rzepsynzki up last week and Matheny hasn't used him once. I said all that to say that Mo will do what he thinks is best for this year's roster and I don't think he would hesitate to trade a couple of prospects for what he believes are upgrades. Whether he has offered enough, only time will tell. He traded a top prospect last year when he traded Zack Cox for Mujica. Mo palys to win. I honestly believe getting Peavy & Ramirez would put you guys over the top. I get how cool it is to have a #1 farm system, but Sox fans know better than anyone that a system can crash and burn quickly and if you're scared to move prospects for proven players you'll regret it more often that not in the end. If I were Mo, I wouldn't pass on improving my chance for another World Series title unless the Sox's asking price was beyond ridiculous.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 04:03 PM) Jayson Stark @jaysonst 1m White Sox haven't shown interest in eating any of Peavy's $ (close to $24M left). That & health were big issues for Atl, Bal, StL & even LA Well that's just f***ing stupid. I don't blame them for not eating any of his 2014 salary, but not eating some money left 2013 is idiotic if doing so will get us a better return.

I think there's no doubt the Cardinals make the best trade partner for us. They have both quality and depth, with several prospects ready for the big leagues right now. I would love to get Adams from them, but any of Wong, Martinez, & Wacha would be able to help us next year. That's what separates them from other trading partners outside of Arizona (who I don't see as actually being interested in Peavy). Also, if we trade them Peavy & Ramirez, that puts some pressure on the Pirates to make a move, which could help us in a potential Rios or De Aza deal.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) I'm sure they're discussing a combination of those players, no chance we're going to get all 3. I don't think we'd get all three of those guys, but Peavy alone should be worth two of them IMO. Regardless, at least we're past the bulls*** phase where we get hourly twitter updates saying no one wants to pay up for Peavy. Clearly there is serious demand for him and I'm more optimistic about getting an extremely strong return than I was a day ago.

QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 07:49 AM) Atta boy. That's using the press, Rick! Next time sprinkle in a bit of Bora$ too: "the Cardinals and Red Sox, joined by the Braves, D'backs, and Orioles, and with late inquiries by two mystery teams." Competition. Leverage. Smarts. Lol...you always need a couple of mystery teams!

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 12:53 PM) Our debate was actually on Quintana. Now I do think that Peavy is a top of the rotation starter and would help every contender. Whether they're willing to pay is the question. You didn't answer my question earlier? What's your beef with Quintana? The numbers suggest he's been a top of the rotation starter this year. Why do you think that's not the case?
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 10:59 AM) Quintana is a mid-bottom rotation guy. Not a key cog to a contender in the stretch run. Probably get more for him in the offseason. What? The kid is currently 27th in pitchers WAR, 38th in ERA if you don't like advanced metrics. He's pitching like a high-end #2 starter right now. Why are you undervaluing him? He's only 24 years old and might even get better.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 03:19 AM) I'll just remind everyone that Carlos Sanchez hit .370 in his time with Birmingham. I wouldn't mind seeing Semien get a month in AAA though. Come on, it was 133 PAs and his BABIP was .449 despite his K rate actually increasing at Birmingham. I still like Sanchez as a prospect, but let's be honest, his success at AA last year was all due to luck. He shouldn't be in AAA right now IMO. On the otherhand, Semien's success at AA this year isn't some fluke, it's the result of improving plate discipline. I'm fine with him getting promoted to AAA at some point this season, but I do not want him on the big league roster. In fact, I'd like to see him spend at least half of 2014 in AAA. We really need to stop rushing our prospects and instead let them finish developing in the minors. The one thing I will give Theo credit for is he wants his prospects to get as many AAA ABs as possible before being called up. It's a smart policy and one I hope Hahn enables.

GT 7/26: Yes, Peavy and Rios are still on the team
Chicago White Sox replied to cabiness42's topic in 2013 Season in Review
Man, Viciedo has been really good in July. Hopefully he can keep this up and reward the Sox for being patient with him. Also, this is why people who actually watch the games are so down on De Aza. -
Semien now 2-2 with HR #13 (f*** Guillen). His July has been nothing short of incredible.

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) Give me Adams + Wong + The relievers and we can talk Yup, you have to get Adams plus another top 100 caliber prospect (Wong or Martinez would do). Otherwise, there is no reason to rush into a deal. We should have the leverage here. Someone will eventually pull the trigger on a Peavy deal IMO.
-
QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) If Hahn was able to acquire Adams + for Peavy and Ramirez, and Profar for Dunn and Rios... I'd be okay with him getting a lifetime contract to be the GM of this team. Profar for Dunn & Rios? Dude, I don't mean to hate, but you have a better chance of f***ing Aaliyah tonight than that trade ever taking place.
