  1. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:23 PM) Seemed like they were trying against St. Louis in the playoffs. And Strasburg wouldn't have helped them possibly edge out the series?
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 08:15 PM) Would like to see Castro or Rienzo get the next shot in the bullpen/spot starter/long man. Doubt we'll see Johnson before August/September unless there's another injury. Yeah, I was just about to post that I think Castro ultimately ends up in the pen where his fastball/slider combo will be much more effective. I'm fine with him getting the innings in AAA, but I don't see him as a starter in the majors.
  3. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 08:37 PM) Hindsight is 20-20 champ. Named C-USA Pitcher of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year... consensus first-team all-American by Louisville Slugger, Baseball America and the NCBWA... finalist for the Brooks Wallace, the Xanthus-Dick Howser and Roger Clemens awards... appeared in 19 games, making 16 starts... had a record breaking season in which he set new season highs in wins (15), innings pitched (117) and strikeouts (151)... 15 wins was tied for tops in the nation... ranked third in the nation with a 1.62 ERA... was 10th in the nation averaging 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings... had five complete games to go along with one complete-game shut out and four combined shutouts... held opponents to a conference-low .191 batting average... surrendered just 35 walks, 83 hits and 28 runs on the season.. I used to follow the draft fairly closely and hated both those picks at the time. I don't like using 1st rounders on players with limited upside. Also, Broadway had some last-minute hype going into his draft (despite average stuff), but McCulloch was just an absolute terrible pick and everyone agreed the second it was made.
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 08:32 PM) Don't forget he had a great year last year, too. And he's still hitting bombs -- he's 19 and struggling with the one thing everyone knew he would need to work on. I couldn't agree more. A guy like Hawkins probably hasn't had to deal failure very often, so I'm guessing he's going to be a bit hesitant to make adjustments initially. That doesn't mean he's not capable of doing so. The physical tools are elite and we all saw what he did last year. I still think he's our top prospect. I would probably go with this personally for our top 5: 1) Courtney Hawkins 2) Erik Johnson 3) Tim Anderson 4) Trayce Thompson 5) Micah Johnson (if plays well at A+ upon promotion) I do think one of Beck, Snodgress, Jaye, & Bassitt could get hot and break into the top 5 though.
  5. Ciuffo better hurray if he wants to catch David Price!
  6. I still can't believe the Tigers get a competitive balance pick. What a bunch of s***.
  7. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) He's rather raw. Don't expect a fast impact. Edit: and that age seems very wrong. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2013/6/3/43875...scouting-report It is wrong. I probably should have done the math myself. Turns 20 later this month.
  8. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:58 PM) Lance Broadway and Kyle McCulloch beg to differ. Come on, let's not compare Stanek to those two bums.
  9. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:55 PM) Anderson is from CC and a sophomore. Wow, totally thought he and J.P. Crawford were both high school kids. I can't believe Anderson is already 22 years old. He better not take a long time.
  10. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) Hate this pick. Might not even stay at SS. Good pitchers on the board That was my opinion at first, but I love taking toolsy high school positional prospects, so I'm cool with the pick. Tough to pass on quality college starting pitching though.
  11. The two black high schoolers we drafted in consecutive drafts don't know each other? What a shocker!?
  12. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:47 PM) I didnt' say thats who I'd take...I think its who the Sox would take. I don't really want either of Stanek/Gonzalez. Who do you want?
  13. The Sox better not take Tim Anderson with this pick. Go with Stanek or Gonzalez and be happy.
  14. I would guess that Shipley, Gonzalez, & Crawford are the top 3 on the Sox's board.
  15. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 06:39 PM) He's in the studio. Not sure if he is the representative at the table. Frazier looks like Screech banged Matt Murton though. Way to steal my Matt Murton joke
  16. Can Gammons do an interview without mentioning the Red Sox?
  17. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 06:35 PM) This guy is ugly Yeah, he's like Matt Murton's ugly brother.
  18. Too bad they didn't try to win that World Series last year.
  19. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) Next years draft class is supposed to be better. With that being said, would it be absurd if a team in the mid-late first round drafted Manaea or Bickford and did not sign them?Theoretically, (although you can't be sure the 2014 draft class shapes up exactly as it stands now) the 20th pick next year should be more valuable next year than this year. I picked 20 as just a random number but you catch my drift. To put it in other words, hypothetically speaking, say the 2013 draft class was superior to the 2012 class. Say the Pirates take Appel, knowing they cannot sign him, just to have two picks in 2013, the better draft class. Would the new regulations come into play in such a scenario? The old rule was if you failed to sign your pick, you were awarded the pick one spot lower in next year's draft, but if you failed to sign that player then you were left empty-handed. So you would have to avoid guys with signability concerns and would basically be giving the player and his agent a lot of leverage. I'm guessing this same rule applies but I'm not certain.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 12:35 PM) David Hayter is not returning to voice Snake in the next Metal Gear game, instead they have chosen Keifer Sutherland. Hayter seems a bit pissed about it too WTF...I don't get this all. David Hayter IS Solid Snake & Big Boss. Why replace him with a more expensive voice actor? And I'm just going to hear Jack Bauer the whole time playing now.
  21. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 12:41 PM) Right. While I am not particularly versed in the financial aspect of the slots with the new rules, there is still certain teams who don't let money and/or injury history stop them from drafting their BPA at the time. Picks like the following are what I am referring to: Nationals with Giolotto. Rangers with Scheppers. Tigers with Porcello. I was expecting the Cardinals with Manaea but his more serious injury report probably changes that. Appel slipped to 8th last year simply because of his bonus demands. The financial aspect affects all teams now, because if you go overslot in the 1st you'll have to go way underslot with your remaining top 10 picks to fall within your assigned bonus cap.
  22. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) I'm hoping that a good left handed hitter is available in our #17 slot. That is a huge void in the organization. Dominic Smith looks intriguing to me. You don't draft a player who is 3-5 years away and very likely will amount to nothig to fill a current void in the organization. Who knows, maybe we trade Peavy or Rios for a young left-handed bat at the deadline or even sign a left-handed bat in free agency. I think organizational need gets overplayed way too much when it comes to the draft. This isn't the NFL, take the BPA early on and fill out your needs in the 20s and later if need be. These guys are all essentially lottery tickets, some with better odds than others, and when you don't take the BPA you're not going to be maximizing your chance of hitting on one of them. It's extremely unlikely any of the guys we'll be able to select at 17 will help us next year and by then our needs could be totally different.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) Intimidators threw a no-hitter in their Game 2. Braulio Ortiz is starting to become an interesting name.
  24. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 07:18 PM) I never assume Santiago will ever get the chance to start. Clearly Ventura has some issue w/ Santiago in the rotation, considering how hard he tries to waste him in the pen. I think it may be more Cooper than Ventura, but who really knows. If they don't give him the starts though, it's pretty clear they don't see him as a starter long-term.
