  1. Vile said at least 3/$36M, which would be a pretty big overpay, especially on the years side of things. Do you really think teams will be eager to pay Abreu into his age 35 season?
  2. And I want to bring him back on a short-term deal, just explaining to Greg that he’s not a stud simply because of 30 HR’s & 100 RBI’s. He has flaws that bring down his value to some extent, which was Passan’s point.
  3. You’re missing the point. A .320 OBP is not good, which suggests Abreu is a power or nothing hitter right now and those guys have limited value.
  4. Why is this a terrific post? You actually want to overpay Jose and risk locking in below average production at some point in time? It’s hard to take your endless criticisms of Jerry seriously when you’re advocating unwavering loyalty here.
  5. Do some research man. Sheets’ OPS ranks 15th in the entire league and he’s amongst the best hitters since mid May. Vaughn was 38% above average in Low A and is currently 22% above average in High A. This is the kid’s draft year and he’s already displaying signs of being an elite hitter, such as a 14% BB rate and 12% K rate for W-S. The BABIP will go up and normalize with time and the power will be in full force next season. I’d wager large some sums of money that Vaughn is pushing for a major league spot by the end of next season. He’s completely outperformed Madrigal in his draft season and look how quickly Nick has advanced this year (should be in the majors already). You are once again being emotional and thinking with dick and not your brain.
  6. No idea what Machado has to do with Abreu. Manny was 26 years old last offseason, while Abreu will be entering his age 33 season. One plays above well average defense at a position of skill while the other is a DH who happens to play a terrible 1B. Citing only their offensive stats (without accounting for the differences in home parks no less) and trying to rationalize any argument is just plain dumb. I love Jose and would love to see him back, but rewarding him with more than a two year deal at a reasonable price is straight-up emotional decision-making and it would likely reduce our ability to build a winner. Loyalty should be rewarded to some extent, but that does not mean we should hand him a starting role indefinitely or overpay him for past production. Extending Jose beyond his age 34 season at this point in time would be absolute insanity.
  7. Giolito is now 4th in fWAR amongst starters and his K per 9 rate of 11.5 ranks 7th overall in tier right below the absolute elite guys in Cole, Scherzer, & Verlander. If he’s not an ace, I’d argue there are only three of them in baseball.
  8. Honestly, I’m assuming he’s trade bait this offseason and they didn’t want to risk a rough starting stint at AA.
  9. I’ve lost most hope in Cordell, but I think it’s absolutely ridiculous we don’t just release Jay and give the younger a look.
  10. I’m certain they will and I don’t see him being foolish enough to pass up on a big guarantee after some of the struggles he’s experienced in the past. I don’t think the fact he comes from a rich family will have any baring.
  11. Snell got 5/$50M early this year with the same amount of control and coming off a Cy Young winning season. Severino & Nola got 4/$40 & 4/$45M respectively plus an option year (I believe both were Super 2 guys). Any deal in that range should be a no-brainer for us as long as we buy out at least one free agent year.
  12. Yep, perfectly logical to want to hand José Abreu a five year contract.
  13. @Moan4Yoan famously referred to it as “regression”...
  14. You guys must not be visiting game threads, because that’s where most of the hot takes, especially in regards to Lucas, happen.
  15. In what world is that not a #1 starter?
  16. Remember when Parkman jumped ship a few weeks back?
  17. Same...have spent very little time even skimming through WSI.
  18. Yup, Hahn should have built a time machine so he could of had the benefit of hindsight prior to making the move...
  19. I’m worried that his FIP turns into a 5.5 figure or worse next year. The slightest bit of stuff deterioration and Nova is a pumpkin IMO. A team in our position next year should be shooting for a more high variance guy that actually offers some upside.
  20. They are having worse seasons <> not mean they will be worse next year. As for Smyly, he’s three years younger than Nova and should hopefully be recovered from TJS next year. They’re all question marks, but I’d rather gamble on the four guys I mentioned (especially Wood) than bank on a 33 year old who is currently posting ~ 5k/9 & a ~5.00 FIP remaining “productive” next year.
  21. I think he gets close to 7/$200M if Patrick Corbin got 6/$140M with his red flags.
  22. The free agent class is very deep with starting pitching, so I just don’t see the desire to bring back a 33 year old dude who gets by on smoke & mirrors. Based on Hahn’s comments during that recent podcast, it’s very clear that Kopech will be starting 2020 in AAA. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they kept him down until June in order to regain a lost year of control. If so, they can easily sell one of several free agent starters who will probably have to take a pillow contract (like Wood, Wacha, Smyly, or Chacin) that a full time role will be open this season. Yes, that means someone may have to be moved to the bullpen when Kopech comes up, but you plan around at least one guy missing time with injury and basically rolling through six starters. After that, Rodon should be available at some point to take some innings from Cease or Kopech down the stretch. So basically my point is the following: Sign one of Cole, Strasberg, Wheeler, Bumgarner, Ryu Sign one of Wood, Wacha, Smyly, Chacin Unless all those secondary guys reject your pursuits, do NOT bring Nova back.
  23. Adolfo 4/4 for the AZL Sox with a HR & 2B. I think he’s ready for a bump to a full season affiliate.
