Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:29 PM) Hawkins Thought that, wouldn't be too upset. Also thought Michelczewski, which would be worse.

well semien is likely the SS, so who is the hitter?

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Reddick is also cheaper that Alexei, although the SS market is MUCH shallower than the OF pool. Alexei could bring back a good RH pitcher but it doesn't seem like teams are desperate enough yet. After Lowrie and Cabrera sign it should pick up. But yeah I wouldn't do AR for JS

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
The two years are what makes him more valuable. Its like, a ~3 win outfielder with lefty power and defense in a market with very few good hitters for two years vs a ~3 win pitcher in a much deeper pitching market for one year.

reddick has more value than shark so getting him involved would take some talent. I think smarj can be had w/o anderson, and I agree that overpaying for the pair would be bad. But I think that is what it would take for both.

shark and reddick for montas, anderson, webb and semien

It's looking like Boston will not land Lester, if rumors are to be trusted (who knows). I would wager we should know if this happens soon.

Sox claim Rob Brantly
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 02:53 PM) Smith was JUST added to the 40 man roster. This is true, but Brantley is likely an upgrade on either of those two guys, and the FO had no way of knowing they would get him. I don't see Flowers getting moved, the Sox pitchers seem to really like him.

Sox claim Rob Brantly
Well there's your backup catcher. With 5 on the 40 man you'd have to think one of Phegley or Kevan Smith will be waived.

Jonah Keri Trade Value Column
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 08:23 PM) People like you are why I hate that sabermetrics have become so household. You just regurgitate some number you vaguely understand and it's concrete fact in your mind. Please explain to me, in your own words, how Q was better than Hamels last year. I think they are pretty comparable pitchers. Q strikes out a few less but also walks a few less per 9. Both pitched about 200 innings on bad teams. Similar ground balls rates, Q gave up a few less dingers. They are very comparable stat-wise, but Q is younger and much cheaper, which makes him more valuable.

Jonah Keri Trade Value Column
Lack of track record, "underrated status" play into it. Mostly I would guess its his very low HR/FB rate. Even if he regresses he is still a 3 WAR pitcher on a dirt cheap contract.

Jonah Keri Trade Value Column
FWIW most projection systems have Jose pegged for a sharp regression next year. Probably factored into Keri's thinking.

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 29, 2014 -> 11:06 PM) Maybe for tonight. I would say probably until the Winter Meetings. Beane wants to let a market form for his most obvious trade chip.

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Yeah this seems like its dead.

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
I want Samardjiza extended so the Sox can exploit a new market inefficiency - guys with unpronounceable last names. Samardjiza, Michelczewski... who's next?
-
Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Probably either pair of Sox. The A's have some outfielders but are always looking for good talent. Meanwhile, they are pretty weak up the middle, one area of depth for our Sox.

Red Sox Outfielders
I'm seeing it from the Red Sox perspective. His body type and lack of a refined third pitch says he will be a reliever. I have more optimism but it is of the guarded type.
-
Red Sox Outfielders
A reliever and a non-prospect will not get Betts. If we're getting Betts then we're giving Sale or Quintana. End of story. Victorino will cost a bag of balls compared to Betts and has a history of being adequate. I'd rather they just pony up for Melky, honestly. The Red Sox don't have a great fit that can be realistically acquired.

Dodgers aggressively pursuing Alexei
Either that or they outright Leury

Predict The Next Move
I was reading this and now i'm convinced that Cahill will be a White Sock in 2015. If he's healthy, he is still a decent pitcher. Strong GB rate for his career, RH, won't take much to acquire. It's a gamble, of course, but his 2016 and 2017 years are options that can be declined if he stinks.

Predict The Next Move
While i'd be thrilled by a big move, i'm terrified of the cost. Gotta stick to that mantra, Rick. Build for tomorrow. Always tomorrow.

White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
This is just money. There is no deviation from building here.
-
White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:49 PM) This is nice. Does this mean the Q + prospects for Jay Bruce is off? That was my immediate thought. It does seem to make a deal for Melky or Headly more likely, i'd think.

White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:37 PM) Viciedo has to go Possibly. For his career, LaRoche is pretty worthless against lefties. .312 wOBA, 89 RC+. Need someone to spell him against lefties sometimes. Maybe Viciedo, maybe someone else.
