Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread
prochisox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I would rather not have instant replay anymore in any sport. -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 07:53 PM) God I hope this is true. That call was complete bulls***. Stacey had it right when he said the call should have stood since there certainly wasn't anything close to sufficient evidence that the shot was no good. The NBA refs continue to make a mockery of themselves. And Brad Miller is the anti-AJ. He's always in the middle of the big controversial calls but he and his team never benefit. Tell me about it. There was no indisputable evidence against it. Replay backfired today.

I got this from another board: On the way home today, Harry from ESPN 1000 claimed he had an inside source that stated Clayton Richard called Daniel Hudson today to inform him that he was a key piece in a trade the Padres & Sox were working on, so that the Sox would get Adrian Gonzalez. And I'm pissed that the Bulls got raped on that call.
-
QUOTE (NIUSox @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) Right before they went off the air today on the Afternoon Saloon, Harry said that he heard from a source close to the Sox that Hudson is the centerpiece to a possible deal for Gonzalez. FWIW ^^^ I meant this. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Nov 10, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) The Padres are shopping him this winter. . With our lack of a DH and with PK's contract ending after 2010, we would be foolish not to pursue this. Are we rumored to go after him? No. . or at least we didn't hear anything, and usually thats a good thing- because if we hear about it- it usually never happens.
-
Is there any truth to this rumor??

I could see it being 3 teams The Twins - new stadium, maybe last year with Mauer, might do whatever it takes to win it this year and try to keep Mauer longterm The Mariners - came into some money recently with Jojihma opting out and could use that on Manny Our Sox - DH/OF

baseball insider says the club has been contacted by an American League team that is interested in Manny Ramirez if the team will pay part of his $20 million salary for 2010. It's a team that plays in a very mediocre division, has a few team officials familiar with Ramirez, and always needs a bump in notoriety. Thats us trying to pass the Cubs in notoriety in the city. I think.

MLBTR has learned that the Cubs and White Sox have expressed interest in free agenty lefty Aroldis Chapman. The Cardinals have been more aggressive than those clubs, and plan to meet with Chapman next week. The Chapman tour began yesterday in New York, as the 21-year-old's agency decided not to make MLB clubs come to Andorra. ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr. believes Chapman will command a contract in the $40-60MM range. Nice!

White Sox's Gordon Beckham named Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year Share | White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham was named The Sporting News' 2009 American League rookie of the year. The honor has special significance, since a panel of 338 major league players selected the winners. Philadelphia pitcher J.A. Happ won the National League's rookie honors. Beckham batted .270 with 28 doubles, 14 home runs and 63 RBIs despite not being promoted to the Sox until June 4. Beckham played in 103 games for the Sox and made the adjustment to third base despite playing shortstop for his entire baseball career. The Baseball Writers Association of America will announce its rookie of the year and other awards next month after the conclusion of the World Series. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....f-the-year.html

White Sox Pick up Garcia's and Thornton's Option

great deal. -
His struggles this season have all but guaranteed him no future with the Rockies, but at least Garrett Atkins had the present Thursday afternoon. "All happy," said Atkins, when asked if he had mixed emotions. "Obviously, I don't think I've got too many more games in a Rockies uniform. I'm just trying to enjoy it with these guys. I'm glad to be a part of it today and help the team clinch. Hopefully we'll have a long stretch in October." Beer and champagne weren't all that cut through the air in the Rockies' clubhouse after their National League playoff-clinching victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. There was no small amount of irony, too. In their final home game of the season, it was Atkins, the run-producer-turned-spare-part, who stepped up and delivered three hits and three RBIs. This was the same Atkins whose season crashed and burned in May, when he hit .148, the first of three months in which he hit below .200. How long was his summer? Consider this: He averaged 105 RBIs over the previous three seasons, but the three runs he drove in Thursday gave him 48 in 2009. "It hasn't been fun," Atkins said. "It hasn't been the way you draw up the season coming out of spring training. But going into the playoffs right here makes it a little bit better. I know I wasn't playing well, but the team was, so it's hard to complain about taking a back seat to guys who are playing well. This is all that matters right now." That could change soon enough. Atkins could well find himself at the plate with a game, if not the Rockies' season, on the line. Particularly if the Rockies' opponent is Philadelphia, given the Phillies' glut of left-handers. "We need this guy," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "I tried to get that message out there: We've got to have you. So it wasn't a matter of completely unplugging him. I kept trying to find a place to plug him in and keep him involved. We don't know just yet, but if it's Philadelphia, there's a strong chance they'll throw three left-handed starters at us. "That's when the importance of Garrett Atkins starts to come into play. This guy could be huge for us." http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_13467129?source=rss Ian Stewart has emerged as a cheaper alternative at third base, and there's no room for Atkins at first because of Todd Helton. Atkins hit .226/.304/.341 this year with nine homers, while Stewart hit 25 homers and posted a .790 OPS. Atkins made $7.05MM this year and the Rockies couldn't offer him less than $5.6MM in arbitration, so they'll presumably non-tender or trade him. Just some news on Atkins.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 03:49 PM) With the Pirates now spending money on Borass clients, probably not. But if he did we still wouldn't pick him. Since we're talking about players who probably won't get to us anyway, I like the AJ Cole kid. I like Cole as well, Bryce Bentz would be a perfect fit, but Seth Blair would be nice as well.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 03:42 PM) Check this out about Pods. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rtnerId=rss_cws DETROIT -- There's has been little doubt left by Scott Podsednik in regard to his strong desire to return to the White Sox for the 2010 season and possibly beyond. On the other hand, with Podsednik entering free agency in the best position of his career, the outfielder doesn't intend to simply take Chicago's first offer and run with it. "No, we are going to wait it out and see what happens," Podsednik said concerning his foray into free agency. "If they want to try to bring me back, then we will entertain that idea and go from there. But this is all kind of a new process to me. I'm going to seek counsel from my representation and do what we feel is best. "I really don't know what to expect and what kind of market there's going to be for me, but I'm going into it open-minded. I'm going to learn as much about the process as I possibly can." Podsednik, 33, has been a revelation on offense for the White Sox during the 2009 season. He carried a .306 average, seven home runs, 48 RBIs and 30 stolen bases into the season finale Sunday at Comerica Park, although he didn't play his first game with the South Siders this year until May 1. There have been a few baserunning and defensive hiccups along the way, but in looking over his entire body of work, Podsednik ranks as the team's most pleasant surprise if not its Most Valuable Player with the bat. The question now for Podsednik and his current employer is whether he has done enough to be brought back into the 2010 fold. The name of Chone Figgins already has been thrown out in the rumor mill as the top leadoff man available on the open market, and the White Sox have been linked to that rumor. While Figgins provides an interesting option for just about any team in need of a quality presence at the top, his eventual asking price in terms of years and salary could make the ultimate difference for various teams. "Would we like to have players like him? Everybody does," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen of Figgins. "But this kid is going to cost you a lot of money. If we figure out this guy is going to solve our problem, then [White Sox chairman] Jerry [Reinsdorf] will take a shot, because Jerry wants to win. "Jerry wants to win. [White Sox general manager] Kenny [Williams] wants to win. I want to win. Everybody wants to win. In the meanwhile, Kenny is going to go see the market and we are going to see how ... I would love to have Podsednik back, but that's not my call. It's between Podsednik's agent and Kenny and the White Sox, but we just need someone. That was our problem this year. Our center-field problem was pretty deep." A deep problem, that is, until Podsednik arrived through a Minor League deal to help alleviate some of the stress. Alex Rios will take care of the center-field issue for the 2010 season, and a healthy Carlos Quentin will flank Rios in either left or right. That pairing leaves one outfield spot open, a spot Podsednik would like to fill. When asked to analyze what might be the major knock against him, Podsednik pointed to his ability to stay healthy as a perceived negative. But Podsednik also feels as if he's turned the corner in that area through a new workout regimen that had him ready for 2009 success. "I've put in hard work to counter things I was having problems with in the past," Podsednik said. "I haven't felt any muscle strains, aches, pulls, anything close to some of the stuff in the past. I feel I have a good working program and can keep my body healthy for a full season. "I don't know what those guys are planning here. To be honest, I don't know if they know at this point. We will have to wait and see. Go home and relax, watch the postseason and see how things carry out from there. "I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be fun, an exciting time," Podsednik said. "I just hope that after all is said and done, I find myself in someone's starting lineup to start the 2010 season."

13th pick protected here we come!

Brewers win! ChiSox claim the 13th pick! YES!!! Sad that I'm excited over this and the Bears game but I am! 13th is better than 14th.

QUOTE (sayitaintso @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 01:30 PM) MIL is currently winning 6-1 in the bot 7 so its looking like the 13th as of now. Hope it sticks, if so, this is exactly how i wanted today to play out.
-
Texas failed to sign their pick last year- 14th- so this year they have the 15th in the draft, so that doesnt affect us in any way. We will have 13th or 14th depending on today. And yes, it will be protected.
