Sox acquire Adam Eaton from ARZ, deal Santiago, Jacobs
royoung replied to Baron's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:17 AM) From what I can see from reason a few scouting reports the past few minutes is the only thing holding people back on calling this guy a top prospect is his build and body. We see how that turned out for one Dustin Pedroia and his giant chip on his shoulder. I like this if Ricky pulls it off. With of without an add on. I agree. Santiago is serviceable, but to say his outings are workmanlike is being kind. His ceiling is a 4-5 starter and we've seen it. When he is spotting his fastball well, he gets lit up. -
QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:14 AM) Some say we are in for Juan Uribe and Scott says we arent.....honestly I thought that was what Kenny was originally was talking about According to a Enrique Rojas tweet, we have offered a 2 year deal and the Dodgers are just offering 1 year an option and Uribe will decide soon

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:13 AM) Getting Adam Eaton does not equal fan excitement, so now I'm intrigued No I think KW's is excited about Eaton's grindiness

Adam Eaton has a slashline of .348/450/.501 in 1,560 minor league plate appearances. I know he hasn't torn up the majors, but thats pretty damn good. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 10:53 AM) Yea, that's kind of what I've been wondering. I'd think we'd need a solid prospect in that deal as well. He put up nice numbers in the minors, but hasn't done much in the majors. I thought he was speedy guy, but apparently not many steals?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 09:49 PM) I think this is going to play out exactly as Dick Allen said. Nothing is likely to happen, but if Sale is gone, Sox fans are going to get over the the loss of Sale rather quickly because the return is going to be astronomical. I disagree. From reading what some have said, they are either a). unobjectively against trading Sale, b).don't trust Sox to develop any prospect, or c). expect Mike Trout back in return.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 09:09 PM) Danks for Gardner straight up even is probably a reach for the Sox, let alone with more thrown in When they say '3rd or 4th starter'.......they mean lower total money than what Danks makes. They mean somebody like Santiago.

Dylan Hernandez @dylanohernandez 4m The owner of the Rakuten Eagles told @pgammo he doesn't intend to post Masahiro Tanaka Don't know if this is final or just negotiating but if Tanaka is not available there might be an even greater demand for Sale.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) A's True, sadly. I was rooting for Peavy to the A's with Russell being the centerpiece. But I guess Avi is a good consolation prize.

QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) Oakland comes to mind Would love me some Addison Russell. Q for Russell, who says no?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 02:54 PM) I never said or implied we would be going after a top 3 starter in FA. We checked in on Josh Johnson and obviously he has a much a better track record than a guy like Paulino. True, I am not familiar with some of the other "bargain" FA starters, but JJ signed for 8 million. We don't have a pressing need for starters, some might even say we have good depth there, so I am comfortable spending 1.75 on a bounce back guy.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) I wonder if this takes us out of the market for other FA starters. What other FA starters? Garza? Santana? Jimenez? No thanks
-
Smart move, he has been effective as a SP and 1.75 million is a fraction of the cost of whats out there. Never a bad idea to have rotation depth

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) Personally if I'm Hahn I'm telling Towers he can keep Bradley and that I want as many pieces as possible. I feel like the package diminishes a good deal if Bradley is involved. Skaggs Chafin Owings Davidson Trahan Eaton Spruill Lamb Drury Pick your favorite 6 and tell them that's the package for Sale. It's quality, not quantity. Bradley has the potential to be as good as Sale with more years of control. Bradley could potential replace Sale as frontline SP in two years, then you build off of him as insurance for the possibility that won't happen. The way the Sox "win" a trade would be Bradley becoming an ace, Davidson and Owings/Gregorius manning 3B and SS, respectively, and Skaggs or any other pitchers become steady rotation guys. If you can fill 3-4 spots with positive value guys to overtake the value of one player, you can comfortable trade Sale.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 10:46 AM) Right. They bust on the Major League field, not in Charlotte. They cost you seasons while you're waiting for them to turn into something, and as they cost you seasons, you maintain your "rebuilding" direction and continue to trade off the proven players you do have for more prospects while being mostly a non-factor on the free agent market because you suck. Or Sale could blow out his elbow, something that some people think is inevitable and we passed on several cornerstone players and have nothing to show for it. Would that set the franchise back five years? Then we shouldn't have so much invested in one player, we need a better team.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) In another thread about trading Sale I looked at the 23 year gap bewteen Black Jack and Sale. In doing so I looked at the career WAR of every pitcher taken top-100 in his class during that 23 year period. Did you know that Nate Jones right now is already among the cream of the crop of that group? Nate Jones is one of the best pitchers we have drafted in the first 100 picks in over 2 decades. And people can think whatever they want about the Sox drafting low-upside McCulloghs and Broadways and stuff, but the Sox had some VERY big arms in there which didn't turn out. Jon Rauch for example has been one of best pitchers in that period that we have drafted and developed in the last 20+ years, and that guy also ranks as one of the biggest disappointments in the Sox system. There are what now, just like 30 rounds in the draft? How many international slots? We've got enough lottery tickets already. Don't need to trade the best asset we have had really since pre-arb Maggs at least (Sale has more value though I'm sure) and probably since Frank just to buy more lottery tickets. Sometimes you get diamonds in the rough, but you have elite guys you draft early who have a chance of being a frontline starter. In recent years, we've done OK when we've drafted higher, Beckham (8th), Sale (13th), and hopefully Courtney Hawkins (13th). Some don't turn out, but with guys who have already been drafted and partial developed, you have a better chance. We are REBUILDING, the only major moves we've done in the past year have been for 3-4 years down the road. If Arizona or Seattle knocks you over with a package of young players who are close to the majors, I don't see why we shouldn't consider it.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) That looks nice on paper but in reality it's likelier that when it's all said and done Alejandro DeAza puts together a better Major League career than at least 3 of those guys. Possibly, but thats when you have to lean on your scouts. None of those guys are new to pro ball, all are either in the majors or fairly close (aside from Trahan I guess). Scouts opinion vary wildly on prospects, they are cost controlled lottery tickets in effect. Just depends on who you hedge your bets on.

Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 1m Jerry Reinsdorf on #Whitesox rumors re Chris Sale: "I've only had 1 player in my 33 years who couldn't be traded. He played basketball.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 09:31 AM) They actually have prospects at positions that make the most sense, but this can't be what Hahn would consider to be a fair trade. He has to feel he won by a wide margin. I just threw some random names out there, but I think Arizona with Bradley and Seattle with Walker match up well.
-
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 49s Diamondbacks are among the teams with the most serious trade interest in Chris Sale -- IF they would agree to part with him. A big if. Bradley, Owings, Davidson, Skaggs, Delgado anyone?

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) Hahn would be crazy to listen though. Hahn needs to find the SS who will anchor the infield on our next playoff team. Hahn needs to find our 3B of the future. Hahn needs to find our long-term CFer, he needs to fix the gaping hole that is the catching situation, he needs to add offense in the meantime to make Reinsdorf happy but not at the expense of the future. Hahn needs to balance the team, balance the payroll, improve the farm, and hopefully find a way to extract maximum value from a few smaller names like DeAza, Reed, Alexei, and maybe Beckham and Jones. The last thing Hahn needs to do is spend the most productive few days of the offseason dicking around with a bunch of idiots who want to waste his time throwing out underwhelming packages just because they don't want to pay a premium for Price. Don't want to pay a premium for Price? Then GTFO you don't have the stones to even speak Sale's name. Hahn needs to set these b****es straight. He's here to get s*** done right now and his is the only team he cares about improving. I think teams would rather pay a premium for Sale, not Price. Price is under contract for two years, Sale for the next six.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 02:37 PM) I'm really hoping this is just a precursor to a trade about to go down Just a precursor to the Rule 5 draft. If anything it shows we are planning on selecting someone, which is kind of exciting

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 12:44 PM) The price for Sale should be ridiculous. If someone is willing to meet that ridiculous price, Sale should be traded. He's great, but he's not Michael Jordan. There is no point making anyone on the White Sox untouchable. Maybe in reality they would be considered untouchable, but Chris Sale should have a price in which he can be had. Exactly my point. It is Hahn's job to determine at what value could Sale be attainable. I am sure the cost is extremely prohibitive to potential buyers. Also, I like how a question about acquiring some of Seattle's excess infield depth has been detoured into Sale's potential value/availability.
