QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) It also provides significant surplus value to the White Sox. Trade others to supplement the team. There's no need to trade the best pitcher the Sox have had in years and years and years. Not advocating trading Sale, I agree with everything you said. But his value is at an all time high and we have one of the weakest pools of young talent in the league. It would be silly to refuse to entertain offers. If Seattle offered a blockbuster package around Walker, or Arizona around Bradley, I think it's Hahn responsibility to weigh the value.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 11:35 AM) Right but that's not realistic. You can't trade $20 for $50. Not saying it's likely, but when the Scott Feldman's and the Jason Vargas's of the world are getting 3 and 4 year deals for 30 and 32 million dollars, a young cost controlled ace could get back just about anything.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) The offer the ends up getting Price won't be enough to make us happy about Sale. Age and contract add much more value to Sale. There's no way the M's will give up enough for Sale when they can give up less for Price. Plus, come on. If you don't hold on to 24 year old stars signed affordably through their age 30 seasons as building blocks, what are you doing? What is the plan there? The plan would be to get 3-4 building blocks for him. I would only trade Sale if we would get absolute studs back at multiple positions.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) Granderson's about what Dunn is at the plate, he does provide more defensively, but Dunn is a little better offensively. I can see a team handing Dunn a multi year deal next season, its probably worth the risk. If he accepts your offer you get a guy that can put up 40 HR's for 1/$15M. If the market for Dunn was comparable to the market for granderson, we would of had no problem shipping off his remaining contract at the deadline. We had absolutely no takers for a him for a year and half of 15 million a year.
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:58 AM) I thought he would probably get 16 the way things have been going. On the bright side, I think the Sox can make an offer to Dunn next year and pick up another draft pick unless he plays the whole season the way he started last year. I really doubt they Sox would do that considering they have been unable to dump him on another team without them giving up a draft pick. I couldn't envision much of a market for an aging DH only player.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:51 AM) Good money to get off the books. Maybe take a couple low level prospects and a catcher--I know Romine is a name that has bounced around forever, but who knows. Hahn was asking for "premium" prospects at the deadline for Ramirez, doubt he just makes him a salary dump now. If anything, the off-season should increase the amount of buyers and drive up the price.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:49 AM) Aren't most of the Sox better position prospects middle infielders? Depends on your definition of "better." Most are projected to be UT guys. L. Garcia and Sanchez are probably UT guys, Micah Johnson is suppose to move to the OF because he's a butcher at 2B, Tim Anderson is a ways off. Semien could stick, but he might play 3B. Point is, if you have a chance to acquire a legit guy, our minor leaguers shouldn't be a concern.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:46 AM) Finally, I agree with Phil Rogers. https://twitter.com/philgrogers/status/408999694371549184 Alexei makes a lot of sense for the Yankees. But watch them get Brandon Phillips. Ugh, so many bad memories of getting trade raped by Cashman

QUOTE (staxx @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:44 AM) thank god. no thanks on a 4 year deal Especially four year 60 million. 15 million a year?? No thank you

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:01 AM) I didn't think there would be a chance he left the Yankees. Seattle is a nice place, but it's been nice seeing Cano play in the spotlight. Now he will play the rest of his career mostly in obscurity unless the Mariners really turn it around. If the Mariners hated paying Chone Figgins, I can't imagine what they will be feeling when this contract gets to it's final 2 or 3 years. Ouch. True but with a future rotation of Felix, Walker, Iwakuma, Hutzlen, Paxton you have to feel good about their chances to compete. A nice young core of hitters too, Franklin, Miller, Zunino, Smoak, Montero, Ackley, all under 27.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) Sounds like after everyone cooled down, talks with the Mariners are back on. 10 years 240 million. Wow. Seattle overpaying to make a splash

QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 03:43 PM) As I imagine it'll be a talking point for the rest of the offseason and many to come, Chris Sale's value cannot be overstated. Solid Grantland piece on this very topic: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/100808...rankings-part-2 As you can see, their is only one pitcher rated ahead of Chris and that is Jose Fernandez. If the Sox were ever to trade him, it would really need to be for someones entire farm or someone along the lines of Manny Machado. Everybody has a price. You can pander all you want about "untouchable," but it just depends on the right package. I think the D'Backs could do it with Bradley as a centerpiece and others.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 12:35 PM) I think if Hoffman ends up being there they have to take him. I would be fine with Trea Turner. Alex Jackson would make me the most excited I think. Callis seems to be very high on Hoffman. He says that if anyone has a chance to overcome Rodon, it would be him.
-
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 11:45 AM) I find myself flip flopping back and forth between Hoffman and Kolek at this time. I lean towards Kolek but he is committed so I would hate to waste a #3 pick on a kid that goes to college. Spring will bring another season of college and HS baseball so who knows how the draft pick status will change. Some likely rise and some likely fall. At the #3 draft slot money I would think it would highly highly unlikely a HS kid would turn that down.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) It did surprise me to see the Sox mentioned with him yesterday, but a lot of that could be trying to drive his price up, as it was reported the Sox at least had a lot of interest earlier before Abreu signed I think this is the case. I don't see how signing Granderson to a 3-4 year deal is going to fit in Rick's "long term plan." He will be at the tail end of that contract by the time we are truly contending and he'll be 35-36.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 10:47 AM) No, it is significant. The Sox minor league system is still bad and they need to supplement it. Giving up this pick is essentially trading a prospect for Granderson. I agree. It's a crapshoot for sure, but the more opportunities you have to select and develop young talent, the better chance you have.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 02:24 PM) I dabble on a Blue Jays message board and their hatred for JP Arencibia is unlike anything I have ever seen. It's Dunn X Flowers X Javy Vazquez X Swisher bad. They will have a thread like "What would be a realistic return for Bautista?" and the 3rd post will be like "f*** JPA." It's almost annoying. He's easily the most mentioned player on the site. That thread is hilarious! I guess it would be similar here if Beckham busted that hard.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 22, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) If you really believe in their prospects, yes. It'd have to be something wild like Profar/Ross/Alfaro/Gallo/Jackson and some lower level guys. But the way Hahn has been talking, it's not gonna happen. I would drive Sale to the airport myself if we got back the #1 prospect in baseball, a legit catching prospect, an excellent RH reliever with ML experience, a good SP prospect AND someone with the upside of Gallo.

QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 06:12 AM) Their will be a big bidding war on Abreu. Going have to throw $50+ million to be in this game. I don't see the Sox organization playing ball when it comes to that kind of money with the unknown. We were in it until the end for Soler apparently. And that was before we shed 27 million dollars towards our 2014 payroll.

Luke Jackson made his first start in Double A last night and went 6 innings, only allowing 4 hits, no runs and had 6 K's. Rougned Odor also homered and is hitting .310/.375/.690 in 7 games as a 19 year old in AA. Yes please.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 10:14 AM) I still would like to see Garcia get the development time down there to still work on his plate discipline, regardless if Rios goes or not. You know he won't if Rios goes. But I would prefer that too. Wait until September 1st, what is the hurt in letting him play for a month? Though it is encouraging he has been drawing walks in Charlotte at a higher rate then ever before. (Tiny sample size I know)
-
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:34 AM) If you give up Rios you will pay more to replace him. Make the Rangers take 85% of the salary and the Sox get a Top 5 player and another Top 20 prospect and it is a deal. Look at what Swisher got this past offseason. Not sure why the Rangers would claim him, they knew the asking price nine days ago and it should not go down. That last part is what gives me hope a deal can be reached. The Rangers knew the asking price 10 days ago, if there really were "not close" to acquiring him, then why claim him and go through the trouble? They obviously want him, it's just a matter of finding a middle ground.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:55 PM) What kind of prospect do you think would be the Sox minimum price to let Rios go? I would take a chance on a younger, high ceiling guy like Jackson, Odor, or Gallo. Hahn was definitely ambitious asking for a package of Perez, Jackson and Odor, maybe Odor and Jackson would get it done?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) Its not for nothing. Its for financial flexibility. For some reason, I don't think the Blue Jays are kicking themselves for letting Rios go for nothing. Have the Rangers throw in a couple of their lesser prospects maybe one with real good stats so people can get excited and call it a deal. He's only signed for the next two years and he has played up to that contract consistently. It's not a contract that is crushing us by any means. "Financial flexibility" was had in the Peavy deal, the Thornton deal, and when Konerko's contract expires. We don't NEED to give up him to cut payroll, so get fair value for him.
