QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 26, 2006 -> 03:15 PM) What would be a good way to transfer the files i want to the new hard drive? (it's mostly just music) You may be able to hook up a second drive as a slave drive. Then it's just cut and paste.

I get Christmas Day and New Year's Day both off. So basically I get two 3-day weekends in a row and two 4-day work weeks in a row. If I was smart, I would've just taken Tues-Fri off next week...

How are you and yours during this fine Yuletide Season?
Iwritecode replied to Texsox's topic in SLaM
Just finished up my shopping yesterday. The only thing left is some wrapping. -
I think I'm one of the last people in the world that still has a waterbed. I love it. Keeps me nice and warm in the winter. That is a huge factor considering my bedroom is in the basement. It also has 2 sets of drawers underneath it so it sits about 3 feet off the ground.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) I purposely mentioned the monetary investment because people are more likely to acquire free music than free DVDs or books. That's funny because I'm the exact opposite. I've gotten tons of books over the years as gifts or I'll pick them up for a buck or two myself. Very rarely do I buy one brand-new. I haven't gotten much free music although I don't have much anyway. I guess my final answer would be movies. I've got a bunch of DVD box sets. Most of them are $20 or more per set and it's rare to find them used.

I'm not really sure how to answer this question. At first I thought it was which do you have more of? That's fairly easy. Books first, movies a close second, music a distant third and magazines an even more distant last. The thing is, I'd say a good 80% of my books came used. It's amazing how many people sell perfectly good books for 50 cents to a dollar at garage sales. I've got a ton of books that I read when I was growing up. Mostly Charlie Brown/Peanuts, "Ramona" books by Beverly Cleary, "Soup" books by Robert Newton Peck. Now my shelves are filled with mostly Stephen King books. I've only been buying DVDs since about 2000. I'd say about half of them I got new. Many of them I got from a used DVD store or even the $5 grab bin at Wal-Mart. I've been buying CDs since about 1992 but I don't have very many. Probably less than 150. I don't listen to music all that much. I had a subscription to a magazine through EB games because it gave me a discount on a game I was buying. I think it lasted 2 years and then I never renewed it. I used to have a subscription to Nintendo Power back when that was the only system around.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 10:40 PM) Around here we have hundreds of thousands of retirees. Store bought decorations?! Too expensive. They collect their garbage all year and figure out how to light it up. My favorite was the 8oz clear drink glasses, glued together and lights stuck inside like a giant lighted ornament. I've seen beer can santas, soda bottle elves, and more coffee filter snowflakes than I can count. QUOTE(mreye @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 08:09 AM) My Grandma bought / received as a gift one of those. Most God-awful ugliest thing I've ever seen! I've seen those things and always thought they were pretty cool. But it's been proven I have no taste in many things (mostly music and clothes) so I'm not suprised. A few years ago my wife made a Christmas tree with 6 wire coat hangers, some garland and a string of lights. She made quite a few and gave them to family and friends.

QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 08:22 PM) How long is 'awhile'? Digital camcorders have been out in the US for 7-8 years. I'm still using a VCR rather than a DVD recorder or DVR. Does that tell you anything?
-
Compared to the regular price, I'm sure it's a pretty good deal. I'm just the type of person that doesn't get into the newer technology until it's be around for awhile and the prices have dropped significantly. I just got my first DVD recorder last year. I still have a regular tube TV, I still have a regular computer monitor, I don't own an MP3 player or a DVR and I've just started getting into digital cameras about 2 years ago.
-
No wonder I'm so behind the times technology-wise. $270 is a good deal for a digital camcoder? I don't think I spent more than $100 for my current one that uses tape.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 06:05 PM) I got a .25% off for using direct deposit with my checking account there, and another .25% off for being there a long time. I ended up with 6.65% for 4 years, when the dealership was trying to do 11% for 4 , hell maybe 5, years I got a 5-year loan with some outrageous interest rate when I bought my first car from a dealer. Back when I was younger and dumber. By the time I was into about the 3rd year of the loan, I owed more that what the car was worth. I eventually got into an accident and they totaled it. Probably the best thing that could have happened to me because I finally got out from under the loan. I only had to come up with $600 out of my own pocket because the check from the insurance company wasn't quite enough to pay it off. Since then I've stuck with private owners and gotten loans from my bank. One of my vehicles is already paid off and the other will be in about 4 months.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 10:33 PM) Yes, but there are companies that have very limited advertising or don't advertise at all...who, you ask? Whole Foods. Not a thing and look at their success. I believe Ben and Jerry's just recently started advertising.
-
I actually took a marketing class in high school and we were taught what makes a good ad and what makes a bad ad. Then we got to create our own newspaper, magazine, radio and TV advertisements. Naturally, I've forgotten most of what I learned in that class... Often when I complain about a stupid or annoying commercial I hear the comment, "well the commercial must have worked because you remembered their product!" Which is true, but usually they annoy me so that I make it a point to never buy their product. I'm always amused at the ones that have catchy jingles that I can always remember, but can't remember the actual product it was advertising.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Dec 9, 2006 -> 08:52 AM) What ever happened to Pop Rocks Gum? QUOTE(BigEdWalsh @ Dec 9, 2006 -> 12:55 PM) Lik-m-aid? Both of these things are still around. In fact, I thought the pop rocks gum was rather new.

Nintedo is known for making games that appeal to younger kids. Lots and lots of Mario and Pokemon games. We have one DS already and plan on getting another this Christmas. We asked my oldest which one she would prefer and she actually said the original DS rather than the Lite.

Interesting but I much prefer a square or rectangle shaped table. My parents have one that can seat 6 comfortably. Then they have 3 additional leafs that can be added to push the seating up to about 12.

I don't care what other people think about me. Yea, I listen to bad music, have no fashion sense, my haircut sucks, and I drive like ****. Sue me...

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) ...Frankenberry? It's in the cereal aisle right next to boo-berry and count chocula. I just bought some last week.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 09:18 AM) Efficiencies are way up, plus technology is replacing some workers and adding others. Many large corporations, Wal-Mart and Microsoft are classic examples, have used the 30 hour week very effectively in trimming benefit costs. Just a minor comment to balance all the sweetness. I don't know if I'd say it's been effective when I go into Wal-Mart at 10:30 at night and there are exactly 2 registers running. Both with 20 people in line...

At my work we are allowed to pick our starting times between 7 and 10AM. For the most part we are expected to work a typical 8-hour day but if we need to take off a couple hours early one day and make up the missed time later in the week, it's not a problem. As long as we are putting in our 40 hours a week and the work gets done, it's not a huge deal. The advantages of being paid salary I guess... Just recently they decided to let us work from home 1 day a week. Which is nice because that saves me about a 1/4 of a tank of gas every week.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 02:51 PM) Ladies bodies = pretty. Men's bodies = yuck. /end debate. Rodney Carrington has a skit about this stuff that is pretty funny. He talks about his wife showing him her kitty in public when she's not supposed to. Then he talks about how men can't do that same thing. You can't just be sitting there eating dinner and pull up your shorts and show her one of the boys. "Hey, look at this." "What are you doing?!?" "I'm just trying to be sexy." "That's making me sick!" "Well I'm sorry woman, they're horrible looking! I'd cut em off if I didn't have such a good relationship with em!" God did not spend a lot of time when he was making them. It's like he just had some leftover stuff and said to himself, Now what am I going to do with this? Smack, right there looks good. -
QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) That's unfortunate I could probably even broaden it to most sports in general, minus the Sox. I'll catch an occasional game from our local minor league teams in baseball, basketball and hockey. If they win, great. If they lose, no big deal. Same thing with pro football and basketball. I'll watch a few minutes of a Bulls or Bears game, but the outcome isn't a big deal to me. I don't pay attention to hockey at all. The Sox are the only team that I actually care about whether they win or lose. I also have no problem playing most sports. Whether it's at the park with friends or on a video game.

Spoilers for anyone that didn't see last night's episode. Eve is dead and Sylar has escaped. Peter had a dream that (I think) he absorbed that one guy's powers (the one that radiated all that heat) and obviously couldn't control them. What's the deal with this Haitian guy? He obviously has the power to make people forget things and the power to block other people's power from affecting him and others. I still can't quite figure out the deal with Claire's dad. I'm not really sure which side he's on.
