2011 Pre-Draft thread
With the talent available in this year's draft class combined with the deplorable state of the farm system, would anyone be surprised if the system's top prospect is whoever is drafted at 47? Remember, Dayan no longer has rookie eligibility and isn't considered a "prospect" in most cases. Pondering a White Sox top prospect list right now is rather depressing.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 11:31 AM) Please don't let the Royals get Hultzen or Bauer. The general consensus is they want and will likely receive Bauer. The long toss issue was way overblown. Quite a few people also believe he is the best pitcher in this class. I like him second to only Cole. The Royals really need some fast moving starting pitching. Duffy has made the leap, but Montgomery is struggling, Lamb is having TJ surgery, and Odorizzi while performing well, is still far away. I'm still surprised that Dayton has missed the boat on trading Soria before this year's meltdown. He could have brought back some fine young arms to bolster the system.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 10:45 AM) If you think that's bad, Dylan Bundy's supposedly asking 6 years $30m, and Archie Bradley 5 years $20m. Neither will get close to that much. Yep. Happens every year. Posturing.

Asking price for Edwin
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 07:45 PM) The only way you're getting anything of significant value is to target something unexpected at low A with a real high failure rate but that you've got a scout who really likes. Edwin Jackson is firmly entrenched with a Type B Elias ranking and will assuredly be offered arbitration by the team he's on (see Boras). The Sox will be looking for talent at least equivalent to a supplemental pick.

6/2 Games
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 3, 2011 -> 12:11 AM) I was unaware. That sucks. He can throw baserunners out alright, but his career passed ball rate is just terrible. Reports on his catching abilities have never been kind. Probably won't matter if he can hit though, which is a big if.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 10:57 PM) Still don't like the pick. As it was pretty clear they could've waited. But that is indeed impressive. Nor do I. I also don't think most people are aware of how bad a catcher Phegley is.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 08:46 PM) Boston already hit a homerun last year on Ranaudo who slid massively due to some concerns but had just massive talent. Yep, and they would be willing to do it again. Theo was quoted saying they are prepared to spend plenty this draft because of the uncertainty of any changes that might arise this off-season in the CBA.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 07:52 PM) From everything I've read, it sounds like we shouldn't touch Purke with a 100 foot pole. I read a recent scouting report saying his fastball has dropped 4-5 mph since HS and he tires real fast. There are some serious injury concerns with him too. Couple that with his asking price, I have a feeling he will fall a lot and wind up returning to TCU. Pretty much. He isn't right at current time, and he isn't obligated to share his medicals either. Most speculation has him being picked by teams that have multiple selections and thereby can afford to miss out. Tampa and Boston are thrown around the most.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 02:02 PM) When the Royals talent pans out, I might place them ahead of Tampa. Tampa has proven their system works. You are talking developmental aspects of the organizations. I would agree Tampa is ahead of KC in that regard. Speaking strictly on the sheer amount and quality of talent in the system, KC is/was generally considered number 1.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 12:49 PM) And they're still only 2.5 games out in that monster of a division with one of the top 3 players in the AL missing nearly 30 games. The Rays are the model to follow in drafting, scouting, and development. Particularly in pitching. They just keep churning out solid to excellent arms. Their farm system was/is second only to the Royals and they will potentially leapfrog them after the draft.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 1, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) Jim Callis with a bit of baseless speculation on the Sox' pick: Chris Reed sounds interesting. Lefty with low-90's FB, power slider, above average change. Not a lot of experience though, but he was born in London! Huzzah. He answered my question. Reed is number 60 on BA's draft top 200 for what it's worth. It's tough to be a draftnik/prospecter when your team doesn't have a 1st round pick.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 31, 2011 -> 11:08 AM) And I'll be bitter if we don't take whomever slides at 47 and just pay em the money (after all, not having a pick until we have one should allow us the financial flexibility to pay above slot). We know it won't happen though. +1. Every draft I get some glimmer of hope, or I rationalize that this is the year the Sox will spend some money. Then we end up drafting Josh Phegley, or fail to sign early round picks (Morgado, Grimes, Terry, etc) which leads to ranting and bemoaning of the organization/farm system until the next draft rolls around where we start all over again. Fun times.

QUOTE (High Mileage @ May 30, 2011 -> 07:34 PM) I have not heard of this, but it may be true after all. He seemed to be pitching just fine when they sent him down, at the time I believed it was just a matter of who had options and who didn't. Soria, at least for the time being, is out as Royals' closer. Rookie Aaron Crow will take over... http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/news/arti..._kc&c_id=kc

QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2011 -> 07:28 PM) I'm right there with you. I no longer get upset when we lose a few in a row cause it makes it more inevitable that arrogant POS gets let go. Bingo. If it leads to Ozzie's departure it's undoubtedly worth it.
