  1. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:48 AM) The Rios return is the return they should expect for Lo Mo. Not a very good young starting pitcher. Carlos Sanchez and maybe Mitchell for LoMo?
  2. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:30 AM) We should all definitely want the Sox to lose, but not at the expense of development. This season is a sunk cost in terms of winning, but some good can still come of it if the young guys can continue to learn and start connecting the dots. I'd love to get the #2 pick, but if a guy like Garcia or Viciedo goes on a tear and prevents that from happening I'll be even happier. Hopefully the bullpen and poor fundamentals will lose us a lot of games going forward though. Axelrod to the rescue. I don't remember who's sig says "half our roster is designed to kill the other half's rallies," but it was so perfectly true.
  3. Here is why you should pull for the Sox to bring in Axe to kill games. The Sox will lose 90+ games. It's better for them to lose 100 and get Rodon than lose 95 and get the 3rd pick. Why? Scouting for baseball is getting better and better with the improvement of technology. #1 picks are becoming more and more of a sure thing (Stras, Harper, Cole). 100% accurate? No. More accurate than even 6 years ago (Tim Beckham)? Yes. The Sox are in a position to rebuild and rebuild fast. They have an ace, they have a #2, and a #3 already in place. If Danks/Rienzo/Johnson/Leesman can be #4's and #5's, the the rotation is actually set. They have Reed, Jones, and Webb to build the pen around. Maybe even Petricka and Leesman. They have a good bats for next year in Alexei, De Aza, Garcia, and Dunn in place. Maybe Gordon has really figured it out, Conor, Phegley, and Viciedo can all improve. Maybe L. Garcia makes Alexei expendable. The Sox have a lot of cash to spend on FAs like Abreu, Morales, and McCann. Hell, if they clear Dunn they can even make a run at Ellsbury. So I'd rather the Sox lose 5 more games and get a talent like Rodon in the system than five meaningless wins because their stay at the bottom of the league may be very, very short lived.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) Which is why I really believe we see Quintana or Santiago dealt this off season for a power hitting 3B of some kind. If I have to deal one of them, it'd be Santiago. I'd still like to try and play the FA market and make a splash or two. Signing Morales/Abreu and McCann would make a 3B like Gillaspie more plausible.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 08:54 PM) How does the return for Santos (who actually was a closer for us) look? You gotta take every trade with hindsight. I may have been Sergio's biggest supporter. I was thinking about buy his shirt-jersey before he got traded. And Nestor sucks. Though with Sergio's shoulder falling apart, it seems the only regret is not trading him for something better. But it doesn't make Webb or Jaye look like any worse returns for a guy we had for two months. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 11:28 PM) Can we trade him for a hitter? I love how we can develop pitchers, but not a hitter to save our life.
  6. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 05:43 PM) I'm probably Webb's biggest fan (liked him since his draft year and was my sleeper pick for two years) but I find it funny people are adamant on trading Reed who is only six months older than Webb, has major league experience and is cost controlled. Reed's been a closer for years. No doubt in my mind he's good enough and has the mindset (who knows with Webb). The return for Frasor still looks pretty awesome.
  7. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) You can now say that the entire pitching staff has been through the Sox system minus Purcey and Lindstrom. Possibly Quintana? I still say Q counts. His jump was crazy.
  8. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 12:29 PM) He's represented by Praver Shapiro Sports Management, twitter reports (Jeff Passan). Googol search shows they also rep Carlos Marmol, Zambrano and Wandy Rodriguez. based in Miami Reinsdorf better use those Jewish connections.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 16, 2013 -> 01:22 PM) I cussed when I saw the Sox lost in a walk-off. Painful, embarrassing season in all aspects of being a fan to those of us who don't care about the draft. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 16, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) Cause I love the team and follow its fortunes every day. And want them to be forever bottom feeders?
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:51 AM) First base is terrible, correct there Beckham has negative range, but he's never shown well in advanced defensive metrics. There's been nothing good at 2B. Alexei always shows well, but errors are hurting him badly this year. Gillaspie is fair defensively, ever so slightly above average. Rios has actually shown a lack of range but has made up for it with his arm. De Aza has done nothing good in CF this year. Neither has Danks. Wise and Tekotte were decent. Viciedo has shown no range, but nobody should be running on him anymore. De Aza shows good range and a mediocre arm. Overall, fairly accurate. I really don't mind Beckham, but I still do not believe he would make for a good everyday shortstop. I think it's amazing how many defensive woes would be elminated with a true CFer. CF and LF are the two weakest spots, and De Aza would be just fine in LF. I've never understood why advanced metrics dislike Gordon.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 16, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) Ouch. You think it's fair calling Paulie a "bum?" It was tongue in cheek because you call any player that is unclaimed an overpaid bum. But now that Paulie is, is he a bum? Or is he still going to get that 2 year deal? And trust me, he's one my three childhood baseball idols (Frank and Mark being the other two), but he's not that good anymore unless his back magically heals at 39 years old.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 04:04 PM) Could be. The bent knees are obvious, however. Thing is, we're not going to win anything until the players improve their on base percentage. Big Hurt somehow hit for power and also walked a lot. He did that by being one of the greatest hitters of all time.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 08:25 AM) I would bet about anything that he did. Does that mean he's an overpaid bum?
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:22 AM) I don't know how anybody could say a negative word about Ozzie right now after watching Robin manage this team. Worst fundamental baseball team I can ever remember and he shares in that. Just cause one sucks doesn't mean the other didn't (at the end of his tenure)
  15. Actually somewhat surprised by this.
  16. Greg will not be amused if he's not claimed.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) A lot of the things I say on here come true. But only Dick Allen has pointed that out on occasion for me. As far as Dunn and Rios. Yes they are my whipping boys for this pathetic baseball team. And yes, Paulie's dropoff has hurt the team just as much. I guess I give Paulie more wiggle room because he had 4-5 really good years in a row. Dunn pretty much was the worst player in the history of mankind for a long long time in Sox uniform. What's the lowest he got that one year, .145, .150? And a lot you say (and the stuff you are more vocal about) has not even come close. Marlins as champs because of Ozzie for example And nice hyperbole about Dunn. Worst ever? Not even close. It didn't help that when he was bad, the selfish manager constantly set him up to fail.
  18. MOBAs make me miss Age of Empires.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:07 AM) The Sox schizophrenia (sp?) has killed the value of some of its players. Nobody's gonna take Dunn for 10 mill a year because when he's been bad, he's been laughably bad. A GM would be trusting Adam to show up in good shape and not be the bad Dunn. Are you confident Dunn will hit over .100 next April/May again? If you were a GM would you risk that for 10 mill a year?? Ditto Rios. He had no value in trade because when he decided he didn't want to play, his loafing was unacceptable. Crazy team we have in Chicago. If Dunn was valued at all, some big money contender would have claimed him. Seriously, did Rios or Dunn run over your dog?
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 10:02 PM) For people that hated the Dunn deal, it's a little funny to see how eager everyone jumping on a guy who we would give twice as much money for a lot less certainty (and we see how far certainty gets you w/ Dunn) Ding ding ding. I want Abreu, but let's stop throwing around crazy numbers.
  21. I just realized that we officially acquired Garcia. Thanks Astros for not being dicks!
  22. If they somehow get rid of Dunn and Danks, they will have a whopping $18M committed to 2014 (not counting arbitration, rookie deals, or extensions). I'd talk to Alexei and Dayan and see what they think about Abreu and try to use them in a sales pitch. The Sox need a marketable bat and a 1B, so it seems like it'd be a perfect fit. Just how much money do you risk on it if you're the Sox? Higher than Puig? Is it worth the risk?
