  1. I can't get the Sox game and the Hawks game doesn't start until 9:30 my time so I'm probably watching neither. I really hate the Eastern Time Zone. It sucks for sports if you have a job that requires you to get up before 7am.
  2. My tax plan [very crude, lacking detail] 1) Different rates for different filing statuses are eliminated. 2) Exemptions and the standard deduction are combined into a single deduction. That deduction is 13,500 for each of the first two people in the household and 8,000 for each additional person. 3) The only itemized deduction that can be taken is gifts to charity. It can be taken in addition to the standard deduction, up to 10% of the post-deduction income. Marginal tax rates 10%: 0 - 19,999 15%: 20,000 - 59,999 25%: 60,000 - 99,999 30%: 100,000 - 249,999 35%: 250,000 - 499,999 38%: 500,000 - 749,999 40%: 750,000 - 1,499,999 42%: 1,500,000+ Capital gains are taxed at 60% of the rate of regular income.
  3. I don't have a problem with Laroche deciding to retire. I have a problem with him turning it into a player vs management conflict on the way out. Seems like that was one time where he didn't take the high road. That was very un-Christian of him.
  4. Just to clarify, if anybody else gets confused like I temporarily was, this story is about electoral votes in the Fall election, while the rest of the thread is about delegates to the Republican nominating convention.
  5. Cable and satellite companies in South Bend carry WGN America, not WGN-9 Chicago. South Bend has its own CW station so if they carried WGN-9, they would have to black out CW prime time programming.
  6. Historically, Trevor Bauer has always had pretty poor control.
  7. This is a very long time ago, but I remember many friends planning their weeks around the release of each week's http://www.chicagoreader.com/ just for the new apartment listings.
  8. I'd be curious to see phone records to see how many calls there were between Hayes and his attorney before this happened . . .
  9. So 56% of the RBI have come from guys who have had 52% of the plate appearances.
  10. The video shows Hayes abruptly stopping in the middle of the block in a (successful) attempt to get Smith to rear end him in order to give him an excuse to shoot him. And of course the lawyer is alleging that there may have been more than one gun at the scene. It's something he can claim in court that the prosecution will have a hard time disproving.
  11. I can see both sides of the argument. I consider myself a right-leaning Independent and not really a Republican, but I generally vote in the Republican primary. In 2008, because the Democratic contest was still undecided by the time the Indiana Primary came around, I took advantage of Indiana's Open Primary rules and voted in the Democratic primary for the sole purpose of voting against Hillary. Depending on how things shake out in both races in the next three weeks, I may do the same again this year. I think the Democratic party can make a valid claim that I really shouldn't have a voice in their nomination process, since in both cases there was/is zero chance I'm actually voting for their nominee in November. If I had to make up my mind six months ago, I would have registered for the Republican primary. Now, if you want to make the case that there should be a later deadline for people who aren't already registered with either party, I'm on board with that, but I don't think setting a six month deadline for people who are already registered with one of the parties to switch is unreasonable.
  12. 4 runs a game isn't terrible given the weather. I've seen quite a few long flyouts that are probably HR in June/July.
  13. Was your source your best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw him pass out at 31 Flavors last night?
  14. So what is the deal with David Murphy? Why have 30 teams decided against signing him? Has to be something beyond the stats.
  15. I wouldn't pull the trigger on Avi until at least mid-May, but if he's still awful by then, I'd lean towards Sanchez or Davidson, whomever is producing better at Charlotte up through that point.
  16. Twins: 7 losses Rest of division combined: 8 losses
  17. Greg, lay off Hillary. She knew her husband was screwing dozens of other women and stayed married to him anyway. She's a model that all married women should strive to follow.
  18. Avi gets replaced defensively if he's out there, but probably not Melky.
  19. The Reds' management quit on 2016, but they forgot to tell the players.
  20. The Twins are so bad they gave up 4 runs while Quintana was pitching.
  21. Well, he could have earned the support of the GOP selection committee, but I agree that what Colorado did was out of bounds.
  22. This. Part of being qualified to lead your party as the party's nominee for President is being able to navigate the process. Now, I'm all for the process being a bit more standardized, but I'm not sure I want to see it become a strictly popular vote. I think there is a place for Superdelegates (though not 15% or whatever insane number the Democrats have), and I think there is a place for being able to identify delegates in each state and knowing how to secure their loyalty. What Colorado has done is a bit extreme though. I'd love to see some sort of breakdown like this for each state: 5% of delegates are superdelegates who are not bound at all 15% of delegates go to statewide popular vote winner and are bound through the first three ballots at the convention 80% of delegates distributed proportionally by popular vote to candidates who finish in the top three and/or win at least 10% of the vote, and are bound through the first ballot the convention. I also think that each state's share of delegates should be proportional to the number of people who voted in the state's primary 4 years ago, with a 20% bonus to each state that had <5% margin of victory in the previous general election.
  23. In theory, yes, but when most areas still use paper printouts of registrations, how do you prevent somebody from registering and voting at multiple locations on Election Day? The technology needs to catch up to allow this to be feasible.
  24. Because of the disparity in the number of RH and LH starters, Navarro is inevitably going to face some RHP this year. Avila isn't going to start 120 games or whatever. You'll also have situations where there is a day game following a night game and you will have to go with two different catchers even if the opponents starters for those two games are both LHP or RHP.
