  1. OK, I asked a HS official that I know and he said that if there is a live-ball penalty during the last play of a period, the period is extended by an untimed down unless the penalty is (a) one that incurs a loss of down, (b) an unsportmanlike conduct penalty or © one that is against a non-player or a player who was not a participant in the play.
  2. In just about every part of the country, average highs in October are higher than average highs in March. Including playoffs, a baseball season last 31 weeks. The warmest 31 week stretch in most parts of the country is from April 3 through November 5.
  3. I am really hoping for the Reds series to be down here.
  4. <Insert name of any NFL team here>'s defense is absolutely terrible.
  5. Must have been some Sox fans at the game last night: http://www.ndinsider.com/multimedia/videos...17a43b2370.html
  6. Is there such a thing as an over/under on a team's entire season? I will bet the over.
  7. Really obscure officiating question: If you bothered to watch to the very end of the ND-UM game, on the last play, ND intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. However, during the return, ND got a personal foul penalty. The officials ruled that, because "the game can't end on a defensive penalty", ND was penalized 15 yards from the spot and awarded an untimed down from that spot. So, while it mattered absolutely zero in this situation because of the score, that doesn't really seem like a fair rule in that case. Once ND intercepts the ball, they are really the offensive team and no longer the defensive team. If they committed a penalty during an interception return, it seems like it should just be the end of the game, just like if the offense had committed a penalty on the last play. Maybe these officials just applied the rule incorrectly, but if not, then the rule probably should be changed. It would really suck to lose a game that way.
  8. Followed closely by the "CMU is the best team in Michigan" talk.
  9. The best I can figure, this is a complete list of FA/potential FA who have an OPS over 700 for the season. Guys with an asterisk have club options. OBP SLG OPS Victor Martinez (35) 404 569 973 Michael Cuddyer (36) 380 546 926 Nelson Cruz (34) 328 520 848 Corey Hart (33) 334 507 841 Russell Martin (32) 408 415 823 Mike Morse (33) 338 477 815 Adam Lind (31)* 364 446 810 Melky Cabrera (30) 348 457 805 Aramis Ramirez (37)* 347 453 800 Hanley Ramirez (31) 350 434 784 Delmon Young (29) 335 445 780 Rickie Weeks (32)* 341 429 770 Josh Willingham (36) 350 416 766 Pablo Sandoval (28) 331 434 765 Ben Zobrist (34)* 357 404 761 Denard Span (31)* 348 413 761 Torii Hunter (39) 312 439 751 Colby Rasmus (28) 289 449 738 Nick Markakis (31)* 342 391 733 J.J. Hardy (32) 320 392 712 Asdrubal Cabrera (29) 312 400 712 Endy Chavez (37) 323 386 709 Alex Rios (34)* 311 398 709 Billy Butler (29)* 325 382 707
  10. Since the article in question was posted quite a ways back, here it is again: http://cornerthree.net/2014/07/29/the-batt...eir-teams-wins/ 1st: Your player who’s best at not getting out – a high OBP means more reaching base and more run scoring. Speed is an advantage, but a slow player that can draw walks is better than a recklessly swinging burner. 2nd: Your player with the best ability to drive in runs – weighted situations say that putting your best OPS/SLG batter in this slot will lead to the most total runs for a team over the course of the season. 3rd: One of your middle-of-the-pack hitters – not only is this slot fifth out of nine in terms of most important OBP, but it’s second only to the leadoff spot in terms of plate appearances with the bases empty. The spot conventionally reserved for one of your best RBI guys will have few chances to actually get them! 4th: After your best base-reacher and best overall slugger, your third best hitter should bat cleanup, where reaching base will be very valuable and a high slugging percentage will still provide ample opportunity to drive in baserunners. 5th-9th: Starting with middle-of-the-pack guys that are comparable to your number three hitter, put the rest of your hitters in descending order of quality, as those lower in the lineup will receive fewer plate appearances over time and therefore hurt the team effort less. Put players with the ability to steal bases in the earlier slots here to maximize run-scoring potential. So your highest OBP is supposed to bat 1st and your best SLG is supposed to bat 2nd. Abreu leads the Sox in both categories, but since Eaton is only 11 points behind him in OBP, I'd put Eaton 1st and Abreu 2nd. Note that the "traditional leadoff guy" ends up batting leadoff, but it has nothing to do with Eaton's speed and everything to do with the fact that he actually gets on base. Next best hitter is supposed to bat 4th. As of now that's Gillaspie but hopefully there is one bat added to the lineup for next year that is better. Garcia probably slots in at #3, Ramirez at #5 and then Viciedo-Sanchez-Semien-Flowers at 6-7-8-9. So, without additions, the optimized 2015 lineup would be: Eaton 8 Abreu 3 Garcia 9 Gillaspie DH Ramirez 6 Viciedo 7 Sanchez 4 Semien 5 Flowers 2 Of course, there should be at least one addition to the lineup and hopefully two in order to move things down a bit, but it still leaves the optimal 1-2 order as Eaton-Abreu.
  11. The play in the video had at least two and possibly three linemen down field before the pass was thrown. Third guy might have been the FB though.
  12. Yeah, they're going to ding him for that but let him get away with all the other s*** he does?
  13. ND has big alumni bases in both NY and TX, so those sites make perfect sense from that standpoint. I don't know as much about OSU, but I would think their alumni base would be more national than the typical state university, plus both teams would love to get up close and personal with those Texas HS recruits.
  14. Not to run too far off politics into religion, but I would also point out that churches that take strong political stances against gay marriage are turning people off to religion big time when their mission is supposed to be the exact opposite. I'm not saying that churches should change their religious position on gay marriage, but changing their political position, or at the very least not taking a political position figures to benefit your church more in the long run than yelling and screaming about the issue, to the extent that you don't even care whatever terrible political positions a candidate might take so long as they are against gay marriage.
  15. When ND played Army in Yankee stadium, it was one of the highest rated games of the season, despite Army being arguably the worst opponent. But I agree with Rock that the game should be in the Midwest. Ford Field, Lucas Oil, Soldier Field being the three most likely candidates.
  16. My 15 minutes of Sox viewing will be set by the timing of halftime of the ND game. It's up to the Sox to notice when that occurs and do something exciting during those 15 minutes.
  17. Exactly why I think they should play one of the games at Ford Field.
  18. Chicago Federal Appeals Court just ruled that gay marriage bans in IN and WI are unconstitutional.
  19. I will watch 15 minutes of the game sometime around 9:15.
