  1. I really hate when sports announcers get political *cough* Costas *cough* but I really like what Brown said, because he made his statement in a way that was advocating personal and social responsibility rather than a political position. Kudos to JB.
  2. OK, I'm looking at Google Maps right now. I see the spot on the SW corner of Harrison/Wells, and it's big enough for a stadium but with very little room for parking. Sox aren't going to give up all that parking revenue they are getting now. The spot on the SW corner of Roosevelt/Clark is much bigger, and also only one block from the Red/Green/Orange lines.
  3. Is that a real school? It sounds like code for, "I'm going to blow a lot of money at the craps tables in Vegas."
  4. The kind of crap I do when I'm bored at work on a Friday afternoon: Chris Sale averages 1.087 K/IP. If he averages 1.35 IP per team game played, which rates out to 218.7 IP per season, he will break the franchise strikeout record in June 2019, or just a couple months after his 30th birthday.
  5. Is there any land left in the South Loop area that could be used for a new stadium?
  6. http://www.southbendtribune.com/news/local...1a4bcf6878.html I get all the reasons why having the low A team in Kannapolis makes sense, with the high A and AAA teams both also in North Carolina. However, the Sox really need to look at the big picture of generating interest in the Major League Team. Interest in the Sox was very high in Northern Indiana when South Bend was a Sox affiliate. Fans paid attention every time a SB player got promoted to AA or AAA, and when one got promoted to Chicago it was on the front page of the sports section of the newspaper and the lead sports story on the local news. I don't believe that the major league attendance bump from moving back to South Bend would be insignificant.
  7. Kershaw doesn't have Felix Hernandez in his league. That's the biggest difference.
  8. I know we all want to see Danks gone, but the games he pitches do still count.
  9. Defense is a lot easier when the pitcher takes care of 40% of the outs himself.
  10. If bad news affects you to the point that you have to make so many threads about it, then just stay off cnn.com. Watch cat videos on YouTube instead.
  11. Yeah, Sale isn't enough above Felix in performance to make up for the 50+ IP difference. Getting his ERA under 2 might sway some voters though.
  12. Sounds like it's going to come down to bullpens. Nice win for Oakland.
  13. Game is on MLBN for those who live in the CIN and STL markets.
  14. Cutler has fathered two children, so he is directly responsible for an increase in carbon footprint. He's also married to a woman who has been on TV scantily-clad, and that really pisses off Muslims.
  15. I've been nominated to do the "ice bucket challenge" eleven times but haven't done it. Just wondering if there is any sort of record I can shoot for.
  16. I so wanted to see Dunn try to hit against Sale, but I guess that was never going to happen.
  17. Today makes me think of my late father. He was playing golf that day. He left the clubhouse and headed for the first tee at what must have been almost exactly 7:46, because the TV in the clubhouse cut from ESPN to ABC News to begin coverage right after that. Nobody in his group owned a cell phone at the time, so there were no relatives or friends calling them to tell them what had happened. Somewhere along the first nine, they got behind a really slow group who was not letting them play through. When that group headed to the clubhouse for a break after the 9th hole, Dad's group skipped the clubhouse stop and went straight to the 10th tee. They finished their entire round, still in blissful ignorance about anything that had happened. Finally, shortly after noon, only upon returning home and wondering why his wife and stepdaughter were home in the middle of the day, did he learn anything at all about what had happened. Since he was taken way too early, I'm even more thankful that he got those extra 4+ hours of peach and tranquility that the rest of us did not get that day.
  18. So, for example, trading Cespedes for Lester would be a very anti-moneyball move.
  19. I'm amazed by people who let themselves get so emotionally affected by every piece of bad news that they have to start threads on baseball message boards.
  20. OK, off topic for just a second: Yesterday in the Vuelta a Espana, two cyclists punched each other during the race, while staying on their bikes. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.
  21. Abreu's signing bonus was paid when he signed. Kind of odd how that works.
  22. The $65M figure comes from assigning an average pre-arbitration salary to the rest of the roster spots that don't belong to arbitration-eligible players or players under contract. So if you sign a FA or trade for a player under contract, you add that figure to the payroll but then you also subtract $600K or so for the pre-arb player whose roster spot he takes. Also, the total listed for the Sox for 2015 assumes that Belisario will be offered arbitration and I find that highly unlikely.
