Well, going by BP's WAR, he's the 8th best pitcher in baseball this year. Yes, he might get better, but nobody will complain about six more seasons exactly like this one.

Given the large number of holes elsewhere, the Sox don't really have any other option than to give Gillaspie the chance to keep up that pace. There simply aren't enough resources to fill all the other holes AND upgrade at 3B via free agency and trades. Even if he regresses to a 720 OPS, which is the worst case scenario, that is MLB average for 3B. If the Sox redirect resources to upgrade at 3B, they will be well below average at LF, DH, and C (not to mention bullpen). So it really doesn't make sense. None at all.

Gillaspie has the 9th best OPS among major league 3B. Maybe the Sox should look at LF, DH, and C first??? Because I think that trading the farm to get one of the top 8 3B and leaving three other black holes in the lineup probably isn't going to produce good results.

The past few years, I have been hearing more and more people calling it the "non-waiver trade deadline".

The 3B was still at his normal spot. One of the OF was with the 2B, SS, and 1B on the right side.

I won't miss him being on the Sox, but I will miss him being in baseball. Loved seeing his monster shots in the highlights long before he ever played for the Sox.

I have a great appreciation for Todd Ritchie. Thanks in large part to him, I got to witness the ML record for combined home runs in a game.

Even if he'd been really good, teams don't generally honor players who played < 4 years.

I really don't think this offer was there a month ago. I find it hard to believe the Sox would have turned this offer down at any point during August.

I think teams just waited until the last minute to pull the trigger so there would be less salary involved.

The Oakland A's are my least favorite team in all of professional sports, run by the most overrated person in the history of sports, but as long as they have Adam Dunn, I am rooting for them to win.

Where are the people who said Dunn absolutely had to be DFA's because the Sox could not unload him and get talent in return OR save any money? Now that they have actually done both, I believe there are several plates of steaming hot crow ready to be eaten.

And if Sale, Quintana and Danks are starting three of those four then I don't think Dunn will be seeing much playing time.

Yes, I would think Dunn would go there now. Big difference between being traded with 2 years left on your contract and 4 weeks left. He can hold his nose and tolerate Oakland for a month.

I don't mind giving up a draft pick to get VMart, because he's far and away the best hitter available. No way I'm giving him $60M, and if it's a 4 year deal it would have to be very front-loaded. Somebody else probably will give him $60M though, so I don't expect to see him on the Sox in 2015.
