QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) It's interesting the examples you pick, because you could certainly make the argument that Collins and Cassel aren't sucking because the teams around them are so good. Hell, with Cassell, it's hard not to think that about a guy who hadn't started since high school. I'm left wondering if Grossman couldn't be a pro-bowler in those slots. Leinart, on the other hand, can't get around Warner, who isn't exactly a spring chicken. Collins is a guy though who knows his role and doesn't make mistakes. He doesn't turn the ball over, and you can't exactly say that about a Grossman for example. Cassel doesn't have much of a running game, but I'll agree he's got a pretty damn good supporting cast. Warner's argubly been a top 5 QB in the league this season, for Whiesenhunt is going to ride the hot hand there.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 10:50 AM) I too was at the game (5th row endzone baby!)... anyway, you really could see how Rex just can't throw over the line, and how far off his passes are from the intended targets. Now, he did spend the last two weeks acting like the opposing team's quarterback rather than his. Let's see what he can do given an entire week of working with the first team. He managed to win the game, and that's all that matters. As far as backup QB's go in the NFL, I'd probably take Rexy over anyone else out there. Don't know about that. Collins has done a solid job all year long for the Titans, Cassell seems to be doing decent enough for the Pats, Leinart would be a good QB for a lot of teams etc. I'd still love Grossman over Brad Johnson though, that's for sure.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) Saturday was a nice one to win. They faced 10 powerplays, included something like 5.5 minutes straight at one point, and another PP in overtime, and came out of it winning in a shootout. Huet saw 51 shots, which is insane. The boys are 5-1-3 since the two opening loses. Yeah they're starting to hit some decent form now. They've been great at home especially. I still think you try to trade Khabi if you can and make a run at a big time offensive center. Sundin would make so much sense for this team if you could fit him in the cap somehow.

Oh and there's word that the Pistons and Nuggets are about to make a blockbuster trade. Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyees. Iverson has an ending contract, and I guess Dumars and Curry are serious about getting Stuckey playing time. Does AI play at PG for Detroit though?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) Wow, those two are nowhere close. The league's top teams are as follows. Hornets Lakers Celtics That's right, the Hornets are the best, and it will be proven. It's the James Posey effect. I'd have the Jazz in my top 5 once they get Deron Williams back and probably the Rockets in there, if Artest can control himself. Bulls vs. Magic tonight, should be a decent game. We were terrible 1st 2 games, but got it going against the Kings. I think Rose will dominate Nelson though if that's the matchup.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 08:22 PM) You are also assuming Garland wants to play for the Sox again, and I would say that is a big, fat, no. Yeah JG has said as much in the press, I'd say there's little chance he'll be pitching for us come 2009.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 05:49 PM) Brad Johnson is a bum, plain and simple. If Bollinger isn't out there to start the 2nd half, i'm breaking something. Yeah he was just terrible. The Cowboys need to win at least 5 of their next 7 to make the playoffs. Will be a tall order to do so I think considering the teams they've still got to face (Pittsburgh, Philly in Philly, Washington in Washington, the Giants again).

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 03:11 PM) I'd rather go with Owens than Taveras. But I'd REALLY rather do NEITHER. Well I wouldn't go that far. Taveras did steal over 60 bases this season. But it all depends on him getting back together hitting wise.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) If they were to get Hardy for SS, I would guarantee the Sox traded for Tavares in CF. Unless Taveras could get his OBP back above .350, I'd rather have Weeks to be honest.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 12:59 PM) with the intention of having him play 2B or CF? Would have to be CF. With the Sox's premium on good defense, Weeks wouldn't be a fit in the middle infield. No idea how strong his arm is, but he would cover a lot of ground in CF I'd say.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 12:53 PM) This isn't a surprise....you can't have your organization basically call you out for being a coward, prove them right, and expect to bring the player back the next year. I bet we'll see a Vazquez for Weeks trade made in the next few weeks. I would take Weeks and a couple of young arms for Vaz FWIW. I like Weeks as a player who I think we definitely haven't seen the best of, and he could give you a good OBP in the high .300's, and you stick him in CF e.g B.J Upton. Then you go out, and sign a SP to replace Vaz in the rotation.
-
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) he's not going to bring a whole lot with his salary. Compare that to what some SP's on the FA market may get though. Still the Brewers may decide just to sign a Jon Garland type of pitcher for instance, but they're a team that likes to keep their draft picks also.
-
To the Brewers for Weeks or Hardy? To the M's for Beltre? To the O's for Brian Roberts? A lot of possibilities here, but if Vaz was dealt, we'd need to sign a SP to replace him, and I'd look to do better than Freddy Garcia FWIW.
-
Very interesting, may we be going after a CF come the off-season then?
-
Casey Blake and Adrian Beltre seem like 2 of the best candidates from outside the organization I'd say.

Whoops;

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) pudge, but that probly wont happen. blanco, if he doesnt stay with the cubs, thats about it..i dont know how good barajas or estrada are defensively I'd take Blanco as a backup. Pudge will want a starting gig somewhere I'd think. Either way, we need a backup catcher who's going to be better defensively than Hall was.
-
Besides Olivo, who's the best defensive FA C out there on the market?
-
The more I look at it, the more I think Dye could well end up in SF this off-season. They're desperate for a power hitter, and I think they would certainly love to have JD or even Konerko (considering his 2nd half of the season). The problem is, what would we want for either. Would love Matt Cain, but he has thrown a lot of innings for a young pitcher and he's arbitration eligible IIRC. Jonathan Sanchez was another guy I'd look at, but he an absolute terrible 2nd half. Also if the Dodgers can't re-sign Manny, do you think they'd have a look at JD possibly as a replacement?

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 12:23 PM) Yeah but Linebrink is going into next season healthy and I really think Richard will be a dominant arm in the bullpen if nothing else give us what Logan was at the beginning of the season. The only spot really up for grabs in my opinion is DJ Carraso's. Richard should be the swingman I think, taking over Carrasco's role. He seems ideal to be the pitcher who can throw around 3 innings before hitters get used to his stuff. You could then sign Reyes to take over for Logan. Depends if we use 7 pitchers as well, as they may give that last spot to either D.J or a guy like Adam Russell.
-
I wonder what type of contract he'll get. Wouldn't surprise me if Seattle traded Bedard, and made a big run at Tazawa possibly.
-
They'll have Price in the rotation so they should be better there. I'd look at trading a Kazmir though possibly, and getting some more arms into the system. With the pen, I can't see Howell and Balfour being as good as they were this season, so they'll need another arm there. Maybe a RF also, depending on what they do with Hinske and Floyd. I can see them winning 90 games next season though.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) The Economist endorses Obama. The Economist is probably my favorite political / news magazine out there. They make a pretty good argument there I think.
