  1. Of course the Yanks have been ON FIRE this year so far, and we came up against Small, Chacon and Mussina, only 1 you would expect to see in a postseason series. Let's not count our chickens before they're hatched here (god I'm sounding like fathom here ), Boston will be a tough series, I'll be real happy to get out of there with 2 wins.
  2. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 06:16 PM) Great slap hitter will hit to all fields has a very good batting eye. I would like to see him get consistant playing time in Charlotte. I like Jerry he has like a pods clone. Couple of notes I think Jerry's Power numbers will rise in Charlotte he does have some power and those numbers will rise. Also a lot of people on here look at his SB stats and think he is not a base stealer but that is not the truth Jerry has been hosed on several calls and few more pickoffs but when Jerry takes off he is not caught often. Tom, what are you thoughts on Owens compared to Spidale, because I'm assuming you saw quite a bit of Mike last year.
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:26 PM) Is it time to consider Owens a true prospect? I know a lot of the experts around here just aren't very high on him but all he does is hit. I know he was supposed to be pretty raw coming into this year but he sure doesn't seem so, it'll be interesting to follow his progress next year. He's got to keep hitting at higher levels to be considered anything more than a future 4th outfielder. Mike Spidale had a great year for B-Ham last season, and now he's back down with the Hogs in high A. Not saying that's going to happen to Owens, but Jerry's gonna need to hit well in Charlotte.
  4. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 04:51 PM) There's a bounty of overrated offensive stats (SLG, OPS, R) but I think OPS takes the cake here. OPS needs to be weighted somehow to give OBP more of an influence on the stat, as an 800 OPS can be great (.400 OBP .400 SLG) or awful (.300 OBP .500 SLG). There have been many reports that say that OBP is 1.2x to 1.4x more valuable than slugging in terms of OPS, and I definitely agree. Case in point, Alfonso Soriano has an OPS of .864. Lyle Overbay has an OPS of .843. The thing is Soriano has an OBP of .324 and a SLG of .540, while Overbay has an OBP of .374 and a SLG of .469. Even though Soriano plays in a position where it's harder to find good players, everyone hear would probably take Overbay every time.
  5. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 03:59 PM) By different you mean crap, right? Yeah, it's got trashy written all over it.
  6. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 03:56 PM) that show is debuting here on one of the channels up the dial... maybe bravo It's been on down here for about a year or 2 now. It's ummm certainly different.
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 03:37 PM) If Cotts wants a shot at starting next year, I think he's earned it. Some don't want him to start because he's been so effective as a reliever. Would you want him to start if his ERA was 5.65? I don't think that's even going to be an issue next year considering we have 5 starters under contract (assuming Garland gets re-signed even thiugh he's due for arbi.). In 2007, however, that situation may arise. It kind of reminds me of the Danny Haren situation. He was mainly in the Cards pen, gets traded to Oakland, and now he's a good starter.
  8. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 03:00 PM) BHam put up a 10 spot in the bottom of the 8th... Young went 4-6 w/ two 2B (6 RBI), average up to .273. -- Did I mention he's gonna be good. (though it's likely he was crushing sub-par pitching tonight.) Yes, yes he is. How many times has he hit in the #2 hole this year, from what I can remember, he's been down lower in the order say at #5 or #6. Rogo's line was quite impressive as well, 1 for 3 with 3 walks. Sweeney had 2 hits, and he's hitting .285 now.
  9. Doubles and Triples (for those of you who bash the White Sox offense, you know why). Oh and welcome to Soxtalk.
  10. After today's episodes, almost every franchise will say no to TO now. The only team I could possibly see trading for him are the Raiders (because well they're the Raiders), but IIRC they don't hav much cap room left at all. Plus Jerry Porter's gonna be around for the next decade in all likelihood.
  11. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:37 AM) Nope. If this team is as good as we're all hoping it is, they'll beat whoever is put in front of them. That's true, but I think everyone here would rather play the Angels over the A's. You shut down Vlad and Anderson over a series, the Angels don't really have much firepower left in their lineup. And Lackey and Washburn would hardly worry you in a playoff series.
  12. I suppose like I said earlier, it'll depend if Neal even gets an oppurtunity to be a starter with us. Mark, Freddy and Jon are going to stick around probably for a long time (think at least 5 years). That leaves 2 spots open in the future. McCarthy should grab one (when he's ready). The other spot could go to an incoming free agent, or someone else in our system like Gio Gonzalez, Dan Haigwood, Tyler Lumsden etc. Of course relievers can fluctuate so much over seasons, so it's not a guarantee Neal's gonna pitch like this forever. But if he keeps dominating as a reliever, I'd probably leave him there, considering how important and how hard it is to find a good lefty reliever.
  13. DBAHO

    In Boston

The Indians keep on winning, so it's important for the Sox to do their part and keep that double digit lead. Should be an excellent series. Schilling's been very good as the closer in the past week or 2, really settled down in the role. With Mark, Jon and El Duque due up though, I like our chances of getting 2 out of 3.
  14. Alright I'm on the "Get Anderson up before September" bandwagon. Yeah he's still got a lot to work on, but he's better than Timo Perez in any case. Broadway keeps looking good, wouldn't look out of place at B-Ham at the moment, will be interesting to see if he can keep performing like he has this year at the higher levels though. Promising start nonetheless. Good to see Baj gettin stretched out, hopefully this can add another string to his bow and make him look more appealing than Jon Adkins. B-Ham losing 10-7 now. Huntsville scored 7 in the 6th, ouch. Young in the #2 hole, 2 for 4, AVG back up to .270 now, while Owens is at .344.
  15. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:45 AM) Agreed 100 percent. As you guys know Neal is one of the guys I've been real high on since I saw him pitch his first game. It'll be interesting to see whether or not he actually gets the chance to be in our rotation in the future, especially if he keeps excelling as a set-up man.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:35 AM) Neal Cotts is another great example of a guy who got thrown under the bus by many here, after basically no time at the major league level. I am so glad to see the blessing of Soxtalk carryover to another guy, and to see Neal kickass out of the pen for the Sox. Oh yeah we remember those threads now don't we. Remember he had no control, he walks too many hitters, his ERA is too high, he should be in Charlotte starting, Kevin Walker has more potential than him, were some of the doozies to name a few.
  17. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:02 AM) Ditto. He just raked at high school (or college can't remember), and he's carried on with those numbers in Bristol. Gotta the .403 OBP at the moment.
  18. So all of you Yanks who want to complain about Gas Prices at the moment, consider this important fact. It's $1.23 a litre down here at the moment. (1 gallon equals 3.785 litres BTW).
  19. Congrats on gettin the house Mike. Hope it truly is a happy home for ya.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 12:41 AM) BTW, does anyone on here work for the Sox? I was told by my grad school professors that they had students who had awful experiences working/internships with the White Sox. IIRC one guy who used to post here WSoxShuf, works for the Sox now.
  21. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 07:32 PM) Time for Cunningham to get promoted?? He's just raking right now. Absolutely, got very high hopes for him.
  22. Congrats on the successful internship and the job you've got waiting for ya once you finish college Jason. It's a real good organization you're working for (you can even come and work down here in Melbourne if you want), now you can start rootin for me to get a job now.
  23. QUOTE(danman31 @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) Nope. He had some time at AA last year, but not AAA. He was a 1st round pick who put decent enough results level to level to maintain his status as a top prospect, nothing earthshattering. I knew he was in AA or AAA last season, wasn't 100% sure to be exact though. But we should see him drop off like Mike Morse has been doing for Seattle as Cheat said.
