  1. Prob. means that HotLanta mite not take a receiver now with their 1st pick.
  2. And this on Grossman, The word in Chicago is that young QB Rex Grossman hasn't been a workaholic in the off-season.

  4. I'm always lookin at makin a trade. Guys like Sabathia, Garcia, Moyer etc. can be had in a good trade.
  5. The only way Adkins has a chance to make da pen is if we send Grilli back to Florida. I think with the 7 man bullpen, it's pretty set; CL: Koch SETUP: Marte SETUP: Polite SETUP: Takatsu Middle Relief: Wunsch Middle Relief: Jackson Long Relief: Grilli
  6. Here's 1 from Cbs.Sportsline.com, Chicago Bears Best Move: Hiring Lovie Smith as coach, which means there is a new offensive coordinator, too, in Terry Shea. Bears fans couldn't stomach much more of John Shoop's offense. Worst Move: Giving John Tait a contract that will pay him $11.5 million this season is not a good thing. He is a good player, but certainly not worth that money. Overall Grade: C. Does adding Tait and Thomas Jones to the offense really excite anybody? Didn't think so.

    Mars Rover Stuck

THE Opportunity rover slipped down a sandy uphill slope as it tried to leave the crater it has explored since landing on Mars nearly two months ago, mission scientists said. The six-wheeled robot tried driving out of the crater yesterday, but the soft martian terrain prevented it from doing so, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said. Controllers planned to try a second way out of the crater today. Opportunity landed inside the 21-metre diameter crater on January 24. Halfway around Mars, Opportunity's twin rover, Spirit, has been exploring the rim of a far larger crater. NASA launched the $US820 million ($1.1 billion) mission to search Mars for evidence the planet once was a wetter place. Opportunity already has uncovered such evidence. NASA scheduled a news conference in Washington for tomorrow to announce what it called another "major scientific finding" by the mission
  8. PHOENIX - With the regular season set to open in less than two weeks, the White Sox' bullpen is facing potential trouble in Shingo Takatsu and Billy Koch. But the starting rotation just might be better than expected. Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland and projected fifth starter Dan Wright have all been sharp this spring, and Esteban Loaiza finally looked like a 21-game winner in Monday's Cactus League outing against the Milwaukee Brewers. Determined to attack hitters from beginning to end, Loaiza pitched 6 strong innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits. "That's what I wanted to do, get my tempo, get my rhythm and throw strikes,'' said Loaiza, 21-9 with a 2.90 ERA last season. "I felt really good today. The first couple of games in spring training, I started to think too much. I realized in my last outing against Anaheim, after two innings, I just said, 'I'm going to go out there and throw it.' That's what I did today and I felt good.'' Loaiza was particularly strong in the first 3 innings, when he faced the minimum number of hitters. "The way he threw the ball today, that's what I expect from him,'' said Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "He only had 70-something pitches in 6 innings. I'm really happy with what he did. I think that's the Loaiza everybody wants to see. I think right now he's ready to go, and hopefully he can extend it all the way to the end.'' No relief: Shingo Takatsu continued to struggle Monday, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in º inning. The 35-year-old Japanese right-hander reliever now has a 10.80 ERA in the Cactus League and opposing hitters are batting .444 against him. While it looks like Takatsu is completely overmatched, Ozzie Guillen isn't expressing too much concern. "He threw pretty good,'' Guillen said. "One ball should have been caught and he's out of the inning, but I'm happy with what I've seen. He puts the ball over the plate. He threw the ball a lot better than he has in the past.'' Koch hit hard: While his fastball is still lacking its old velocity, closer Billy Koch managed to throw 6 scoreless innings in his first five Cactus League appearances. On Monday, Koch was tagged for 3 runs on 3 hits on 1 inning. "He wasn't locating the ball real well,'' Ozzie Guillen said. "And when you get behind the hitters, they are going to do a lot of damage to you.''
  9. SUNSCREENS may need to be completely reformulated after Australian researchers discovered the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn are not responsible for skin cancer. The Sydney University team found UVA rays - which do not visibly burn the skin - penetrate more deeply and do more harm than UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn and have until now been considered the main cause of skin cancer. Dermatology Professor Gary Halliday said the finding by his team could lead to a complete overhaul of sunscreens, which currently protect more against UVB than UVA. "Our data indicates that we need to develop products that can protect from UVA as well as they protect from UVB," Prof Halliday said. "I hope it's going to change the emphasis on to UVA." The discovery also could have dire consequences for tanning salons, seen as a popular alternative to baking in the sun. "Tanning salons primarily irradiate people with UVA, which I think is very dangerous," Prof Halliday said. UVA has long been known to cause wrinkles and ageing to skin, but has thus far been considered less dangerous than UVB, which has been blamed for causing skin cancer in studies with mice. Prof Halliday and colleagues studied the types of mutations in non-melanoma human skin cancers. "We found there were a lot more UVA mutations in human skin cancers than UVB-induced mutations, and this has never been shown before," Prof Halliday said. "Plus, the cells at the base of a tumour, which are the cells which form the tumour, only had UVA mutations in them, no UVB mutations." Covering up or staying out of the sun remained the best protection against skin cancer, Prof Halliday said. The Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute has received NSW Cancer Council funding to further the research, he said.
  10. 2 reasons. #1 Economics. Pretty sure Lee's makin $7mill this year, $8mill next year and $10 mill in 2006, please correct me if I'm wrong. With a heavily backloaded contract like that, if Lee struggles in the future e.g Konerko in early 2003, he will probably be the 1st guy to be traded. We could always hav another Ordonez situation on our hands in the future as well. #2 Outfield Prospects. In 5 years, Anderson, Sweeney and Reed will in all likelihood be capable of starting in the outfield for the White Sox. They will be young, and most important cheap, before they are arbitration eligible. We could always trade Lee for a need, like starting pitching in the future if we could do that.
  11. What advice did Crede's wife giv Joe then?
  12. Shows how hard it is for a small market team like Pittsburgh to win when a guy like Benson who would easily make more than 10 - 15% of their total payroll, can't even play half a season. I'd only pick him up, if he's shown throughout the 1st half of the season that he can STAY healthy. And even then it's still a risk, just look at a guy like Jeff Suppan, a success in Pittsburgh, a failure in Boston.
  13. Homer Simpson to Grilli and Bull: "Oh you guys are so cut."
  14. That would easily be the worst case scenario. He was neva goin to set the world on fire straight away, so I'm willin to giv Mr. Zero at least 2 to 3 months to settle in the regular season.
  15. Hopefully he can find the right mix b/w puttin enough heat to challenge the hitters and to get his control right.
  16. The New York Steinbrenners? The New York Costanzas? The New York Vanderleighs?
  17. I think Ryan Sweeney's performance in Spring Training has led me to that assumption too. With Maggs and Koch contracts likely not to be renewed at the end of the season it will give us an extra 15 to 20 million of payroll flexibility to sign sum free agents. Mark Mulder would be a perfect target, but I'm not sure if he's arbitration eligible this year, 2005 or 2006.
  18. Nice pic there PA. Is that a Tennis Court is the back right corner where that woman is walkin? :headshake
  19. PHOENIX -- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday morning he wasn't worried about relief pitcher Shingo Takatsu. After Takatsu gave up a run and three hits facing four batters in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, Guillen said he's still not concerned. "He threw the ball a lot better than he has in the past," Guillen said. General manager Ken Williams said he expected Takatsu to be this season's version of Tom Gordon. Right now, though, Takatsu is shaping up as a specialist to face right-handed hitters. That's a situation Guillen doesn't want. "Then I have [Kelly] Wunsch and him as specialists—lefty and righty," Guillen said. "That means I have to use two pitchers in one inning for no reason." Takatsu has given up 12 hits in 28 official at-bats (.428) and has an ERA of 10.80. … Different sorts of pain Center fielder Aaron Rowand still has to ice both wrists after spraining them a week ago, but he said the pain is subsiding and is not affecting him much at the plate. Rowand was 0-for-3 Monday but is hitting .419. ... Guillen's uniform was stolen when his rental car was broken into Sunday night in Peoria, Ariz. Thieves smashed the back window of the car at the hotel he stayed at after the game against the Mariners. ... Success starts at top The Sox are counting on Willie Harris or Juan Uribe to improve the leadoff spot. Sox leadoff hitters had a .333 on-base percentage last season, which was the American League average but just sixth among the nine spots in the Sox's lineup. "The leadoff spot is a big key to everything," Guillen said. "The team I came from had the best first- and second-place hitters in the game [Florida's Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo.]" Harris was 0-for-4 Monday, dropping his spring on-base percentage to .333. Uribe's on-base percentage is just .243 in 12 games. ... Closer Billy Koch gave up his first runs of the spring Monday. He surrendered three runs and three hits in one inning. He had been perfect in six innings, allowing four hits. ... Guillen said beginning sometime this week, he'll start managing as if it were the regular season. "The bullpen will be here every day," he said. "No later than Friday we'll have everybody in and play the way we're going to play in the season." The opener is less than two weeks away. "It's easier once the season starts because I can do my matchups," he said. "Here I have to get guys innings to pitch, and most of the time we don't have the entire lineup."
  20. I've always wanted to read Moneyball, neva seen it down here bf though.
  21. I'd say the starting rotation at Charlotte would be pretty set with Cotts, Rauch, Diaz, Stewart and Pacheco. And then you would hav Adkins, Sanders, Munoz, Ginter and 2 other pitchers in da pen.
