  1. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 2, 2012 -> 03:27 PM) Steve calls every slider a cutter. It's a slider. I'm gonna go against the grain and say it's not a bad pitch. It's only bad when it is up, like just about any pitch. He throws it up too much. Not true. The pitchFX data on fangraphs (which is accurate) shows that Gavin hasn't thrown a slider once since 2010. After '10, he scrapped his slider for a cutter, which is now the pitch he throws with the 2nd highest frequency.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) Quintana, Santiago and Pedro Hernandez don't count? We already have Sale and Danks. I wouldn't say ANOTHER lefty is the highest priority in the world at the moment. You don't pass on a front-line starter (which is what I assume they'd view Smoral as if he's the pick) because you have Jose Quintana, Hector Santiago, and the immortal Pedro Hernandez in your system. Just take the best player available and be done with it.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ May 26, 2012 -> 01:17 AM) Jones is an absolutely AMAZING talent. Agreed. He's been one of the most pleasant surprises so far this year. He has all the tools to be a dominate late inning reliever for years to come.
  4. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 25, 2012 -> 10:20 PM) UZR is supposed to be measured over a 3-year span, if I am not mistaken. Yup. Like anything that has to do with statistics, the larger sample size the better. Soriano's UZR this year is the perfect example why a 50 game sample size is completely irrelevant.
  5. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 26, 2012 -> 12:02 AM) Defensive metrics are stupid. If you tell me Ramirez and Rios are bad defenders. I'm probably going to laugh at you while I watch you wipe my snot off of your chest. These metrics are far more accurate than a given persons eyes. With that said, Alexei is a great defensive player. We all know this. He ranked 2nd among all SS in UZR/150 last year.
  6. 50 game sample sizes of UZR are worthless.
  7. Not saying this is the be-all end-all, but Peavy's xFIP and K/9 are both worse than they were last season. If KW sees an opportunity to sell high on him now, I'd be all for it.
  8. This entire fiasco could have been avoided if the Sox said they were briefly taking Sale out of the rotation. The Rangers have already done this with Feliz, same with the BoSox and Bard.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 8, 2012 -> 04:25 PM) He is also on pace for 233 strikeouts, which would set the record by 10. If he finishes the year with a .921 OPS, does it really matter?
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 10:21 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,2480450.story Manto's approach with Beckham and Morel, very little or no video. So, he doesn't like to use video, and he puts minimal value on OBP. Almost makes me wish Greg Walker was still the hitting coach.
  11. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 21, 2012 -> 08:23 AM) I still think it should have been Reed from Day 1, but I'm not complaining about Santiago. I'm just glad it wasn't Thornton. Pretty much this. Not because I don't trust Thornton in the closer role, I do, it's just I like the fact of having your best reliever be available for high leverage situations that occur at any point throughout the game.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 15, 2012 -> 02:13 AM) I'm amazed at how good a hitter he is. Approach wise, I don't think there's a better hitter in baseball. For what, 3 years now, he's been on top of every pitch. Amazing hitter. Albert Pujols wants to have a word with you. With that said, PK truly is amazing. He's pretty easily the 2nd best Sox hitter of my lifetime. If he played for any other team, I may question how it's possible for a player in his mid-30's to be having the best years of his career, but since he's a White Sox, I couldn't care less.
  13. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 14, 2012 -> 09:03 PM) If by pessimistic you mean not likely to win the division, then you are not alone. I still think the Tigers get it done fairly handily. However, my outlook on the future (and this season) is adjusting upwards. I originally had them pegged for a win total in the low 70's. I just don't see how this team will score runs. There's a (very) realistic chance the Sox end up getting replacement level value offensively from Beckham, Rios, Dunn, Morel, AJ, etc. The Sox are just fortunate they play 81 games per year at the Cell, so their run total will look inflated compared to where it would look in a more normal ballpark.
  14. His approach/swing are as bad as ever. Beckham's O-swing% (percent of pitches swung at outside the strike zone) has gone up dramatically each year he's been in the big leagues. I still think the talent is there, but he needs a ton of coaching before he becomes half the offensive player we hoped he'd be after the '09 season.
  15. Am I the only person that's still a bit pessimistic? The Sox have no chance at contending if Dunn, Beckham, and Rios continue to hit this poorly. But, it's early, hopefully they turn it around...
  16. Just give Alexei the Gold Glove now.
  17. Moreland (lefty) is leading off the inning for Texas. Maybe Santiago is only facing one hitter?
  18. So, Santiago is officially the closer. Letting your 4th (at best) reliever start the season at closer. Interesting decision, Robin.
  19. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:30 PM) He does not handle pressure well at all. He's been one of the best late inning relievers in baseball over the past 3-4 years. One bad outing (in a non save situation) doesn't change that.
  20. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:28 PM) I am sorry no way is MT a closer in any way, shape or form EVER! Seeing as how this isn't a closing situation, how is that relevant?
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:19 PM) I don't think they had a lefty up I'd rather have Fukudome face "some kid" lefty, than Mike Adams. Sometimes lefty/lefty match-ups can be a bit overrated.
  22. I enjoy this version of Adam Dunn so much.
  23. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:13 PM) The Sox will use at least 4 pitchers in this game. Another Sox manager overusing a bullpen - the more things change...... Ohman faced one hitter. Reed, more than likely, will only face 2. I'd hardly say that's over using the pen.
  24. Thankfully the top of the order is leading off this inning. No other part of the Sox lineup would have a chance against Adams.
