2015-16 NHL thread
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 06:50 PM) The Russians the Red Wings had were really good especially Federov . The Hawks Russians have a lot to prove and quickly. Russian influence in the NHL is really an interesting discussion. Drafting Russia players in the current NHL is a little bit riskier now. The KHL is becoming extremely attractive to a number of players. Players like Val Nichushkin should not have fallen as far as he did, but there is clearly some concern Russian players will terminate their contracts and return to the KHL.

2015 Cubs Catch-All thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 04:28 PM) And just like that, Cubs are tied for the WC lead. 4 days ago, they were 2.5 out of the WC and so were the Sox. I hate baseball this year. If the Cubs success and the White Sox failure drives your love/hate for baseball, you're going to hate baseball for the foreseeable future. Their future is stacked, our's is garbage. What a difference a front office makes.

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal
QUOTE (gatnom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 03:45 PM) This is why nobody in the thread wants to sign him. But if you stop and think, the question isn't "Should we re-sign Samardzija?", it's "At what price would the White Sox sign Jeff Samardzija?" as well as "Is there a chance he'll be on the market for that value?" So you start by looking at the usual suspects. Yankees, Red Sox are likely to aim higher. So are the Cubs. Angels maybe? Do they think Jeff Samardzija is worth that kind of money? Probably not.

One day so bad, next day so good, rubber match so bad.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 03:19 PM) No reason for Abreu to still be batting. Definitely hobbled, and game is out of hand. More non-coaching.

Sox sign Dayan Viciedo
The Sox have a Cooperstown's full of busts in the last ten years. This is just one of the ones they waited too long on.

Scott Podsednik
QUOTE (InTheDriversSeat @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 01:28 PM) I think I heard last night that Scott Podsednik will be filling in for Steve Stone in the broadcast booth for the series at Kansas City (August 7th, 8th, and 9th) I wish he would fill in for Hawk forever.

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 01:04 PM) Greinke is not going anywhere. He will opt out but Dodgers will extend his deal with more money and years. Agreed. When you have essentially infinite funds in a market like LA, you can just throw more money.

Bryant pulled out of today's game. Precautionary pull after head first slide.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 03:06 PM) I can't tell whether this comment is describing Sale's contract or Quintana's contract. They mirror each other. Quintana's is significantly cheaper. In each case, the sox have two cheap looks at both.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 03:00 PM) Jose Quintana's contract actually kinda disagrees. Two team options on a potential stud pitcher? That's fantastic.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:57 PM) They both should be fired after this season, but I don't get why some act like Hahn is this incredible GM ready to be unleashed as soon as KW is gone. It's really hard to tell. The only thing we know Hahn does is get contracts signed. Chris Sale's contract is a masterpiece. It's the best non-rookie contract in baseball by a TON.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) Rick's the one who went out there on Friday and said "If we keep playing like this we'll be right there at the end". On more than one occasion in the last couple of months, it has been made abundantly clear that Ken Williams is running the White Sox baseball operations. . I don't want Rick Hahn to have to go to Kenny for permission. You shouldn't either. Ken Williams is a disaster as a baseball GM. He caught lightning in a bottle for one season and has sucked ever since.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:53 PM) Stop blaming KW. At least he was able to put together a winning team once. Rick Hahn has been pretty awful at his job. Great guy, great speaker, awful GM. You realize after that season, he all but destroyed the franchise? There are no honorary titles given to World Series winning GMs if they follow it up with seasons of suck fest. Every move for ten years has been driving further into the ground.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:50 PM) Thanks front office for thinking we could contend and keeping shark and then not adding anything to help the roster Clearly this FO isn't interested in winning they way we're supposed to. I'm tired of Kenny Williams. His comments make it clear he's still in charge and he needs to go.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) They're not going to give up on Avi yet and we all know that. What they're going to do in the IF I have no idea. But since I think them picking up Alexei's option is a terrible idea, that's my best guess. Those options aren't meant to be taken. They'd be overpaying.

2015-2016 NFL Thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:17 AM) There goes the biggest advantage the Seahawks had, now they actually have to fight the salary cap in putting together their defense. NFL cap hell is the worst, too.

8/2 vs NY Yankees
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:40 PM) The move you can call impressive for me is getting a guy like Arrieta and turning him into something valuable. Turning Samardzija into the #7 prospect in baseball (IIRC that's where BA had him slotted)? easy move. Stealing Rizzo from San Diego? Easy move. And yes, they drafted Bryant, after the Astros passed on him. They put themselves in a position where mostly they were making fairly easy decisions. Some of them have even backfired - Castro extension for example. It's like us getting Rodon. Easy move. Schwarber...if he keeps hitting like this, much more impressive move. And the thing is, now Cub fans understand why they were bad for so many seasons. They look to be competitive for multiple seasons. It's been said the White Sox can't do something like that, but they've been so bad year in and year out, could it really be that much worse than it is right now?
-
8/2 vs NY Yankees
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:37 PM) Schwarber was a great pick given the industry consensus going into the draft. Right, and while the Sox are fantastic at drafting pitching, they could use some real fielding prospects. The Cubs understand they will have to overpay for pitching and they're okay with that, but their fielding prospect pool is just so rich. It's the same thing that makes the Cardinals excellent year in and year out.

8/2 vs NY Yankees
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) How hard is it to "Draft Kris Bryant"? (No one who works for the Astros is allowed to answer this question). It's not just Kris Bryant. I don't think they drafted Bryant, anyway. It's Kris Bryant, it's turning Shark into Addison Russell. Their minor leagues are just so stacked and their FO just gets it.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:34 PM) Can we just steal the Cubs scouts? I look at what that club has done with great envy. Houston, too. There needs to be a scouting and development shakeup. I have a feeling a lot of that falls on the remnants of Kenny Williams past and current power.

QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:31 PM) They need to spend and *gasp* trade prospects. Yes those mystical things. Honestly, they need to successfully draft position players. It's been a huge boon on their success.
