    Movie game

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 07:43 PM) I got them all in an hour and five minutes. It wouldn't let me save my score. Anyway, some of the clues are absolutely terrible, some are so obvious that it's impossible and some of the clues are downright hard. Bullplop. Here's a visual solution to the game. WARNING -- SPOILERS WITHIN LINK. http://www.jadedcabaret.com/mms-solution.jpg I had 29 completed before I gave up. Several of those -- the movie at the bottom of the staircase, the mother holding her children, the people holding/wearing/ "O" symbols are answers I never would have guessed.
  2. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) Blacked out names coming out.... http://www.newsday.com/sports/la-sp-clemen...ports-headlines Clemens, Pettitte, Tejada, Brian Roberts, Jay Gibbons... That's only huge. Here comes ESPN's criticism of the anonymous source disclosing the blacked-out names. They'll also whine about this issue needlessly distracting attention away from the playoffs. None of those names surprise me, however. Even Pettitte's steroids use -- if these accusations are to be believed -- was likely to help assist his recovery from injury while on the Yankees.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 05:47 PM) In case you didn't get the connection, they're all dark movies. I know, and again, I'm suggesting you'll REALLY have to know your horror/suspense/thriller movies to reasonably complete this. As in the obscurity of the movies mentioned. Know many people who've seen Eraserhead, The Wicker Man, Rear Window, or the Howling? The Rear Window reference, especially. I wouldn't expect 95% of this board to guess correctly. Merely because it's an Alfred Hitchcock movie made fifty years ago.

I like the accompanying music. Fits the mood. You'll REALLY have to know your horror/suspense/thriller movies to reasonably complete this. The game isn't exclusively held to well known movies, or those even within the last 40 years. I have 22/70 right now. Some of these are fricken impossible. How the hell am I supposed to know what movie a woman carrying two children is from?
  5. Scott Spiezio may have saved the Cardinals season. In the 8th inning, Cordero layed a fat pitch with two strikes, two outs, bases loaded and Spiezio cleared the bases with a triple. St. Louis was trailing 2-0 at the time.
  6. QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) Great 8 innings by Mark. Tadihito hits good in 6 spot. Sweeny and Mack major contributors. Buehrle wishes he could receive credit for Garlands line.
  7. Would only make sense for Kansas City to draft David Price and continue building lefthanded, Sox killling pitchers within our division.
  8. I'd really be interested in watching Haegar pitch. Whether today or tomorrow it doesn't matter. Just like to see how his knuckle works in the controlled conditions of the dome.
  9. QUOTE(beck72 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) The offense isn't blameless, is what I'm saying. I wasn't ranking the causes of the sox 2006 downfall. If you think the sox offense is complete, so be it. I don't. And what's the deal with the Buerhle hate? One bad season and he's all that in your sig?! It's not complete. I just rather devote attention to improving our pitching. Let's just put it this way: if the choice was given to leave one area of the team exactly as it is entering next season (between lineup/pitching), I'd pick the lineup. Even if they continue struggles against lefthanders within the division, or any lefthander overall, we'd still win above 90 games with more consistent pitching staff. QUOTE(beck72 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) And what's the deal with the Buerhle hate? One bad season and he's all that in your sig?! Yes. "Aces" don't regress this far without reason. "Aces" don't literally collapse when their needed during a pennant run. For 9 million entering next season, I'm setting expectations high. As everyone does with Vazquez, Buehrle, or any other of our high-priced starters. You don't perform, you'll be criticized in my book. I don't give players passes over an entire season. People struggle for weeks. Sometimes a month. But for literally three months? For someone with Buehrle's credentials? Not when our window of opportunity is practically closed and Buehrle isn't even the fifth best lefty in the his own division. Unfortunately, he's paid otherwise. And because I know the similarity will be drawn, yes, Konerko had his dismal season as well and rebounded. Buehrle will have next season to prove himself. Whether with us or another club. But as of now, I'm far too disgusted with his performance.
  10. QUOTE(beck72 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 12:26 PM) When you have Dye, Thome, Pk, AJ, and Crede with career yrs and still not make the playoffs, yes, some different type hitters are needed. I'm not saying any of those should go. Those are the spots to have the HR's and non-speed guys. Just that other guys around them have to have a different skill set. The sox have too many guys with the same type of skills on offense. Now, isn't that "super"? Uh, starting pitching? Bullpen inconsistencies? These issues are more important to address than our offense. Did you happen to read Balta's post earlier this week? This years offense was shut out less, produced a higher output of runs, and was far more consistent across the season. It was hardly the problem. What Williams needs is players capable of adequately hitting lefthanded pitching. Leftfielder should have decent numbers, as any new OF/IF backup.
  11. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:49 AM) Stick with who we have and go with a six man rotation. I like the idea and maybe if the team had gone with six starters this year (you don't have to use the sixth man every sixth day mind you) maybe the starters would have been better. I think our biggest problem is shoring up the bullpen. If we can upgrade at LF and maybe CF then great, but I don't see it being the same priority as the pen. It'll never happen next season. You do realize Buehrle and Garcia may be playing for contracts, right? There's a selfish angle here you have to consider. Wins = money; and it's nearly impossible to approach 20 wins with a six man rotation. It would have actually made sense this year, but the players still opposed the idea. They have their routines and are unwilling to change it.
  12. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) I'm just not impressed by Garza. Or Bonser for that matter. No one could deny his pure stuff. Problem is his command this afternoon. His faces New York with this command they'll walk him to death.
  13. Fields and Sweeney have looked far more impressive than Anderson did during his first several weeks of major league experience. Both appear to have a sense of plate discipline.
  14. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:13 AM) I like Brian as a 2-hole hitter. Let's see if he can't produce. He can't. Let's see Fields vs. Garza. Best of both organizations right here. Fields doubles, but is stranded. Ground rule double saved a run.
  15. First opportunity I have to watch Garza for an entire game. I wouldn't have been confident regardless of the lineup, but with Konerko/Dye/Thome gone 10 strikeouts from Garza woudn't surprise me.
  16. Removing a starter from the team which "brought [us fans] a championship" isn't what I'd call "a little bit of tweaking." I'm calling bulls*** here. He'll reinforce confidence in this team because now, with even two games remaining, can you expect him to blatantly state his offseason goals? He didn't even state with a direct quote his desire to put McCarthy in the 2007 rotation. Should tell you something right there.
  17. Everytime something was expected of this team the second half they choked. If they go into Minnesota actually trying to win 2/3 you know they'll fail. I'm going with doormat. The immortal Boof Bonser is pitching game 1. Might as well be Santana with how this team gave up the last two weeks.
  18. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) my sense is the last two drafts have been pretty lame. we still haven't developed a decent middle infielder in a long, long time (Durham?) nothing as SS now that Valido has bombed. i'm concerned because we had four teams that finished last in its league in last one-half of the season standings. Kannapolis was the worst team in the Sally League in a decade. Don't worry. Continually trading prospects to reinforce a "win-now" philosophy will pay off with annual playoff births. Oh wait.... Well, atleast you can count on our stellar Latin American scouts finding a potential MLB utility player. Oh yeah, they can't even do that...
  19. QUOTE(VAfan @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) Now that we stand where we do, I've written that KW should keep the starters for another season. Part of that is trying to pick the one to let go. Part of that is deciding that 2006 was the off year, and 2007 is much more likely to be an on year. If I had to let one go, it would be Vazquez. Problem is, he certainly won't bring back 3 players. He likely won't even bring a Chris Young straight up. Look at the benefits vs. disadvantages of keeping everything as it stands in the rotation. -Garcia pitches well/poorly he's gone in 2008. Possibly without compensation. -Buehrle pitches well/poorly he's gone in 2008. Possibly without compensation. It's been explained before -- the situation with Buehrle needs to be resolved before 07' season begins. Contreras/Garland/Vazquez are staying regardless, so It's useless speculating. Buehrle and Garcia are the two possbilities because of their limited contracts and questions related to effectiveness. Say what you want about the Vazquez trade, he's proven himself in September as a more than capable starter. Potential ace of our staff. Hell, even during his "five and dive" days his mistakes typically lasted one inning. Even on that note, he still is filthy for five innings. Buehrle (in particular) and Garcia are far more inconsistent. And you haven't explained what to do with McCarthy. I'll assume you want to trade him, because keeping him in the minors (not sure if he has an option remaining) is a f***ing travesty. Who exactly do you trade a young, cheap, possible #2 in a rotation for? You'll never have equal value unless the other team is willing to overpay with several cheap, young, pitching prospects. And don't say Crawford. If we're trading McCarthy, it should be for two/three McCarthy calibur pitchers who are -- at most -- one year off from the majors.
  20. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 09:45 AM) He is still pretty cheap for 2007 if I recall. Plus I am not sure who you replace him with (I am sure some will say Soriano). Do we have any MLB-material secondbasemen in the wings in the minors? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Seriously, it's rather baron across the infield.
  21. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 11:56 PM) Seeing you drunk= 10 levels of ugly. It's not the MinnesotaSoxFan we all know and love.....
  22. QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 10:17 PM) Yes because 1 pitch starters are always super effective and good. Especially when the "sneakiness" to their fastball disappears. Now Cotts just has that girly leg kick and a straight, 90 mph fastball without deception. He can leave immediately with Garcia and Podsednik.
  23. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 09:54 PM) Remember if you trade Mark Buehrle, next season you will most likely have 5 RHP's in your rotation, and that can't be good when you have the likes of Justin Morneau and Travis Hafner in your division. You can't base your decision on whether or not to maintain a starter because of several good left handed hitters. Kalapse's comments several posts ago are all points I completely agree with. If Williams can't negotiate a fair deal for an extension OR trade him, I'll be extremely disappointed. It'll once again affirm my position he doesn't know squat about assessing a players value, and when it may be a good time to sell. Business preceds ticket sales here. Sure, regarding prospects he has the right idea. Sell high. I just don't know why the same practice can't be applied to any of our players. And it's not just selling high for anyone; but doing so when a situation is available (such as McCarthy last season) where it's possible to improve immediately AND build for the future. This is what happens with "Winning Now" philosophies. Prospects are traded for veterans, and when the veterans become either too expensive or ineffective no one is available to replace them. How this applies to Buehlre, a home-grown product, involves our "win-now" attitude towards the acquisition of MacDougal. Wouldn't it be dandy if Lumsden pitches for the Royals in 2008 right when Buehrle leaves? Sure would have been nice having that safety net available. And I realize MacDougal has pitched well and remains under our control for awhile. It's just ridiculous what we gave up for an oft-injured relief pitcher....TO A DIVISION RIVAL. Jim Hendry gives teams within his division crap. Williams gives his companions top pitching prospects.
  24. QUOTE(GaelicSoxFan @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 03:32 PM) IMHO, the leadoff hitter for the 2006 Chicago White Sox will be Jerry Owens. He's their top speed prospect. The reasons why they traded for Scott Podsednik are 1. Owens was two years away from being ready for the big leagues and 2. I liked seeing Carlos Lee hitting walkoff grand slams against the Cubs, but he's a member of the 'swing hard in case you hit it' club. /puke If it were up to Guillen Owens probably would be the starting LF next year. However, it's difficult to use your speed when you're not on base. Or atleast the clip you'd expect from a soft hitting leadoff hitter. Anyone willing to project how he'd fare over an entire season? More than likely Podsednik-lite if his last two seasons in AAA are any indication. Perhaps he'd steal more bases with a better CS%, but that doesn't mean much.
  25. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) Flash, your sig is a thing of beauty. LOL. I'm working on resizing it to fit one line. Anyone willing to help?
