MLB 2021-2 off season thread
That all being said, the Reds aren't trading Gray, who is controlled for 2 years at ~$22M including a $12M club option for 2023, in a deal headlined by Gavin Sheets. They're asking for Vaughn, or Crochet. And I am not doing that trade.

Yep. I like Gavin and I think he has a role on this team. We definitely need lefties. Its unfortunate he can't field a position. I sincerely worry that Gavin's presence will hamper Vaughn's development. Worse yet, I worry that Gavin's presense will result in the Sox trading a franchise cornerstone in Vaughn. They can all co-exist - namely, Gavin being a bench player or AAA insurance. But if you can turn 26 year old Gavin Sheets who was basically a non-prospect a year ago (Sox didn't even invite him to alt site) into Sonny Gray in the midst of your contention window, you do it all day long.

Sheets headlining a deal for Sonny Gray would be a massive W.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
Correct. I don't think moving to and from taxi squad in 2020 counted as an option.

I think Mendick actually still has 2 options left.

I think he should be the near everyday LF myself. But I’d mix him in around the Diamond a day or two a week while he’s young. Sitting on the bench isn’t an option IMO.

TA for Gleyber! Brilliant

Cesar Hernandez to Nationals, $4M
Agreed. Trade was fine - tho they should have aimed higher. I’m not worried about Pilkington at all. But holy shit, Cesar was unlikeable in every way.

Certainly not how I’d do it. Stated that many times here. But he’s at least a really good hitter.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
He was the starter for a couple playoff games because Cesar Hernandez sucked balls in a Sox uni and Madrigal got hurt. Not complicated stuff. He will also be a starter on Opening Day - at SS. Becuase TA is suspended. The Sox will acquire a 2B. Relax dude. Have a dab or something.

TA is also suspended the first series.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
He just put up 2 fWAR in about 2/3 of a season at bats, so that would indicate he's very much a serviceable bench piece. And he isn't the starter. He wasn't the starter last year (they literally acquired Cesar so he wouldn't be), and he's not going to be in 22 either (Fegan has confirmed as such).

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
Yep. I'd prefer something like 2/$8M as well. But Leury had a bit of a market, cause he's a useful bench piece. The Sox have spent around $15M AAV for Graveman and Leury. Based on the history, I get why people are scared. But let's let hte rest of the offseason play out before we call this a "white sox move". Both Leury and Graveman - while not sexy - were moves that fill holes. Let's see who our RF and 2B are before we burn the place down over Leury getting paid $6.33M a year (maybe). It sure seemed to me for months that Leury would be back for a multitude of reasons - not the least of which is this is where he wants to be and he has a clear role on this club.

Ahh yes. Comping Leury to Machado is valid here. The offseason just started. And you aren't getting multiple "left handed savages". Hopefully you'll get one. The lineup with Conforto and Segura is easily top 3 in the league, very possibly #1.

Not Steve Cishek is a troll and doesn't know anything that any clued in Sox fan doesn't know.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
Fair. Romy also has a long way to go to prove he is even a major leaguer. So there's that. He's also still in the org.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
So if he gets $15M over 3 years its a great move, but $20 over 3 the sky is falling? That is a difference $1.675M a year. Less than 1% of the Sox projected 2022 payroll. Absolute chump change for a big league team. All things being equal, I too would prefer 3/$15M over 3/$20M. But its negligible and the Sox aren't signing Leury to play RF or 2B everyday - two positions they are certain to still fill before Opening Day,

Leury is actually a good defender and provides switch hitting. Romy provides neither. This was such a no-brainer re-signing - no idea why half of you are up in arms.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
Werent you literally arguing like 2 hours ago that Leury is a fine bet to replicate Segura's production at 2B for 1/3 of the cost?
-
White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal
Not really. He was only used as a starter for part of 21 because we were absolutely riddled with injuries. He's never been a "starter" for the Sox. Its not Leury's fault everyone got hurt in 21 and he didn't.
