You cannot possibly say the White Sox will "Still spend nothing when the rebuild is ending" while looking at this trade. This is literally looking at options they could spend on, better players, who would cost more money, and taking a worse player because he costs less.

But also because he's not a long term commitment.  I no fan of this move overall, but Mazara at $5.7M for a 1 year is world's better log term than Ozuna at 5/$90M or whatever he's going to get.  Ozuna makes the 2020 White Sox better than Mazara - Mazara makes the 2021-2024 White Sox immensely more flexible both on field and and monetarily.

Why do we think the Mazara move says this at all?  Mazara is under control for two years. Betts, Springer, and Pederson are free agents after next season.  Betts is a pipe dream and Springer is likely as well.  I think this move is more of a statement that the Sox really like Mazara and think he will pan out.  I don’t think it in any way indicates that the Sox are waiting for a better target next offseason.

Because if Mazara doesn't improve drastically, he is non-tendered after 2020.  Its not that hard to figure out.  He's basically a 1 year player on a $5.5-$6M deal with a club option at $8-9M.  If he doesn't blossom in 2020, he's gone.

Ok yeah this is uninspiring but it's still Dec 11. If this is it, squarely a bad offseason for the Sox. No question.

What makes no sense to me is people complaining that, if he's good, we're going to lose him in the middle of our 4 year window. Umm, yeah, if he's good we have a good player for half our window? There's no downside to Mazara being good at baseball for 2020 and/or 2021.

I don't think this is all that likely a scenario, it's just a nonsensical argument.

Ya I love that one. “If he’s good his agent is Boras and he’s good as gone!” Like who gives a fuck - if he’s good we just found a fuckton of surplus value. Not super excited for this move, but I had Mazara like 6-8 range on my RF target list. If Ricky uses him correctly, it’ll be alright.

In a vacuum Walker for Mazara is whatever.

I just think you could have used Steele Walker as a piece in a much better trade.

This. Walker could have been a super nice 2nd or 3rd piece in a bigger deal.

It’s whatever. But unless we’re moving Collins in a deal, or offense is pretty much set and we could still use another nice bat.

I deserve a spot here hah - June 6th! I definitely rounded out the the team a bit weak though. Oh well.

Give the man his props! You’re always welcome on the bandwagon! I’ll have to look tomorrow when I get in front of a computer my first mention of Nimmo - Not sure of June 6 has me beat, but it may!

Seriously tho - Nimmo is the perfect fit. If working directly with the Mets, maybe taking Lowrie off their hands would help.

The return doesn’t even matter.  We missed on Wheeler.  We aren’t signing Cole.  Short of a trade for an impact starter (which will require significant talent), we’re looking at one of the tier 3 starters being our big pitching addition.  Therefore, we can’t just settle in RF if we want to be competitive next year.  We need someone that can actually be impactful and Mazara simply doesn’t cut it.

I hear ya. Still prefer him assuming a reasonable return for his valid, minimal future commitment and retained financial and positional flexibility to signing either Castellanos or Ozuna.

I am not making this Mazara move in mid December tho.

still what do they care they are terrible.

They could afford to fuck around with Collins at catcher then. I will say this - if Collins bat sticks and he can be a passable MLb catcher, that is one hell of an asset.

Now Nimmo is a guy I wouldn’t shirk away from trading Steele Walker ++ for.

Obviously not, but he’s gonna cost a lot more than Walker. Maybe that three way with the Pirates where the Sox give up Stiever + Collins + Walker. I’d do that for Nimmo, who has been my guy for months but lost faith Mets would move him. Pirates do want that catcher. Then DH opens for a cheap 1 year masher like EE and all of sudden you got a good looking offense.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but we are likely looking at carrying an extra OFer with the increased roster size next year, right? Given Mazara’s upside, I don’t see this as a problem, provided the price is right and other OF options are still being explored. I’m higher on Mazara’s offensive potential than anyone else seems to be, though.

Extra catcher.  Sox will carry 3 catchers, as will several other teams I imagine.
