  1. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 12:22 AM) Fantastic Four is apparently not being screened for critics until the 24 hours before its release which almost certainly means its a piece of s***. Hopefully Fox gives up on the Fantastic Four and the characters revert back to Marvel. Apparently, the embargo has been lifted.
  2. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 10:43 PM) Adolfo is back! He had a problem with his hamstrings
  3. QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 04:35 PM) ....but the question is, why the internal move now??? All of the major showcases and all star games for prep players who will be eligible for the 2016 draft are happening right now. And the Cape should be in play already. In other words, prep for 2016 draft is starting to take shape. So the timing if the announcement makes sense. If Laumann isn't going to be the guy going forward, why not announce the new guy as you start your draft prep.
  4. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 03:59 PM) God forbid they'd go out of house to find a replacement... Teams rarely go outside the org to find a replacement. And it sounds like Hostetler has a different philosophy than Laumann. He said he's a high ceiling guy and is 'intrigued' by high school players. Whereas Laumann liked high floor guys and leaned more towards college guys.
  5. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 03:27 PM) For what it's worth, I was tipped off about something along these lines a few months ago. The person I heard from said Rick started to listen more and more to Hostetler at the expense of Laumann. The person that I was in touch with felt Laumann was actually better at his job than Hostetler. We'll see how it work out. One thing is clear...over the last 15 years the Sox have had a number of people in charge of amateur scouting and minor league operations. In my opinion that's part of the reason the minor league system is in the shape its been in. Mark Hostetler did a lot of press regarding the draft.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 07:23 AM) Saw Kingsmen last night. Pretty fun but you could tell that it was low-budget. I enjoyed the dark comedy/violence but my wife wasn't that interested. I'd say it's a solid rental - 3.5 stars out of 5. I wouldnt call a $80M movie low budget, especially for a basically original property. (They made the graphic novel to make the movie)
  7. How games do they have to win to get in... 37?

    2015 TV Thread

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 02:00 AM) Saw the last two episodes of a certain HBO show today. f*** it, I can talk about one of them. The newest episode of True Detective was out of this world. I feel bad for the people who gave up because you're missing out. The episode was 70 minutes long and it may be the best 70mins of anything that I have seen all year. After watching I thought that it was the best episode of the series to date, and I would be put right up there with Breaking Bad's Ozymandias, which I consider to be one of the best episodes of TV ever made (in recent memory). My favorite character this season was Paul, who is played by Taylor Kitsch. When they introduced the 'closeted gay man' dynamic, I originally thought that was horribly cliche and a terrible stereotype but now, I don't have a problem with it because of how well it was done. I think that Paul's character is kind of a metaphor, that although America might be becoming more and more accepting of the LGBTQ community, there are still people who struggle who believe that their 'urges and nature' are natural due to how they were brought up or some exterior reason. A lot of people are telling others who are struggling with this issue, brush it off like 'its okay to be gay, just come out to everyone', while they may mean well what they're suggesting is nothing but an ignorant and extremely simplified solution to something that a lot of people struggle to accept. There's a moment near the end of the episode where Paul is confronted by some people from his past, who were able to find and blackmail him into meeting by threatening to out him. During the meeting, one of the guys tells Paul, "If you'd just been honest with yourself then none of this would be happening to you." Me and all the people, I watched that episode with all let out a collective gasp, it felt like being punched in the gut. So when Paul is running away from the people from his past, he isn't just running away from people carrying weapons, he is running from his sexuality. And even after being a few hours removed from the episode am I still bothered by the whole situation, but that just shows how good it was, especially from the writing and acting. As a HUGE fan of something called Star Wars, I hated how Mace Windu (Sam L Jackson) was killed in Ep. III, for such an awesome and bad ass character, he died like a punk and that is not a criticism of the acting but of the writing and it is my biggest gripe of the prequel trilogy (well, that and Hayden Christensen's performance as Anakin). I thought that because he's a gay character that if he were to die, he'd die in an emasculating way, but Paul had his blaze of glory and had a warrior's death. I used to not think highly of Taylor Kitsch's abilities as an actor but he has really won me over and he's been a highlight of the season. Everything about this episode was great and it really raised the stakes for the finale but this aspect of the episode is what took it from being good and made it great.

    Rick Hahn

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 05:50 PM) Who was the last successful fielder drafted by your Chicago White Sox? Would it be Beckham? Is that a success? So you would rather have no/less flexibility in the draft? Edit: Everyone knows that the Sox haven't had success drafting position players in the draft the past 10 To 12 years. That doesn't mean that the Sox should just avoid that as an avenue (aliteration*) to influx the system with talent and stop doing things that could set them up for success in the draft. Let me guess, you would love for the Sox to be able to trade all their picks for aging veterans.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 09:13 AM) I can't see how not trading HURT the "Rebuilding". It didn't help it right now, but it certainly didn't hurt it. Exactly and the money attached to that comp pick is going to give Rick and co. some flexibility in the draft.
  12. QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 08:53 AM) Perez might have leap-frogged over Alfaro, who, for some reason is on the Sox Top 30 list. He should be on the top 30 list. He's 17 years old playing in the AZL, so calm down. The fact that the Sox were willing to send him to the AZL one year after signing him out of Columbia, shows how high they are on him. The same goes for Amado Nunez who the Sox are excited about.
  13. I'm happy. They didn't jeopardize the future and didn't force a move just to make one. And they should be getting a comp pick.

I think this deadline proves that Hahn is running the show, if Kenny was in charge a move would have been made or better or worst and Kenny would not aknowledge the team's long term future.
  15. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:38 AM) Hopefully he will be THE Carlos Perez that people think of in the big leagues 10 years from now. He's been my sleeper guy for most of the season now. He could be an above average to good catcher defensively, and his ability to put the bat on the ball is remarkable, only 12 K's in almost 240 PA's dating back to last year. Looking forward to seeing him in Great Fall next year. I hope he goes to the AZL, even if its for a couple weeks. I would hate to see him rushed.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:57 AM) Anything we give up for a rental when our backs are against the wall, is extremely risky. Belton Bill Melton was on yesterday and he had some interesting points (later on he kind of went back on them though, but I'll ignore that for the purpose of this post). Bottom line, he said that he hopes Kenny and Rick execute on whatever they planned to do prior to the streak happening. If they thought they had the goods to win, then do it, if not, then do that, but you shouldn't necessarily let 1.5 weeks of play impact your decisions for the rest of the season. I am actually giving Bill Melton more credit cause he didn't quite say it like that, but it was his point. It is also why I believe it is imperative for the club, if it is going to buy, to buy someone who will be here for the long haul (unless the rental is so cheap it is absurd not to do it, such as Beck for Cespedes or something like that). We should be taking a quasi Ranger mentality (or almost like a 2004 mentality when we acquired Contreras) and while the move might help us contend this year, the goal is for this to make us a better team in 2016 & 2017. With that in mind, when it comes to Shark, Hahn and Kenny have a ton of leverage right now. Dodgers still need that upgrade (and the list of pitchers like Shark is small and some rivals, including the Giants have upgraded). Angels have to also be interested in another pitcher (especially given the moves the Astros just made) and I presume the Yanks would be listening as well. I'm not saying I'm ready to sell as I want to buy and have said I want to buy (but potentially do a controlled sell as well). Given where the market is, if the Sox get the right offer, I don't blame them for selling Shark while still buying a bat elsewhere. I also am okay with them buying a bat and going for this thing, but please, please, do not buy a rental or make a bunch of moves ignoring our future. Totally agree
  17. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 08:17 PM) Avi has issues, effort isn't one of them. Defense, path to the ball, tapping into his power potential, should I go on?
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 04:00 PM) Is he in DSL or Arizona? The DSL club.
  19. Michael (Dallas): Hey Ben, Thanks as always for the chat. Can you give some under the radar Catching prospects who you think can make it to the bigs and stick at C. Thanks Ben Badler: These are always tricky questions because I’m never sure how far under the radar to go. I’ll go way deep under where most people are looking and say Carlos Perez with the White Sox. He’s the younger brother of Angels catcher Carlos Perez (his oldest brother is also a former Cubs catcher named Carlos Perez), but the White Sox have the most advanced brother at his age (18). Nice swing, good approach, uses the whole field, projects to stick behind the plate and has a chance to hit for more power than his big league brother.
  20. The Sox shouldn't buy even if they get into the race, they can't afford to deal from the farm.
  21. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 05:32 PM) If the White Sox are uncertain of their direction, and that usually leads into a conversation about trading Jeff S, but what would they be looking for if they decide to make a run at a wildcard? Does playing for a 1 game playoff temper the aggressiveness? It should, unless your getting an asset with multi year control but they aren't in a position to damper the farm regardless.
