  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 06:56 PM) Absolutely not. Agreed I would not trade Quintana for only Bregman. Our system needs more depth and we need to get 3 to 5 players in return for Quintana. We have needs all over the place and a major trade chip like him should return us several high quality pieces
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 04:04 PM) It's hard to know Houston's public motivations vs. private ones. I feel like they are a smart enough front office to know Quintanas value. But in baseballosphere, seems like opinion is they have too many soft tossers and Quintana would not add a different arsenal to the mix. They are smart enough to know not to trade Bregman, I wouldn't trade him either That being said I think they know how badly they could use a pitcher like Quintana and are motivated to trade for him
  3. It's not so much a different arsenal, as they need a stable quality pitcher to help anchor the staff as they are in their window to contend Washington knew it had a two year window to contend before Harper leaves in free agency and paid for Eaton Boston knew its window is now as well to contend with Price still in his prime and cost controlled young players Houston's time is right now to win it all, Keuchel is under contract for two more seasons...although they might have a bit longer window than some other teams
  4. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 04:27 PM) Not really. They won 94 games and were in a division race with Oakland that year. That's what really caused fans to flock to the ballpark. I imagine that the Sox will draw 1.4 million this year and maybe 1.25 million the following year. I don't expect attendance to fall to 1989 levels, when the Dan Ryan was under construction and the old ballpark was falling apart. The current ballpark is in much better shape and is way more family-friendly. Season ticket sales will be in the toilet, but I imagine that the Sox will still get a semi-decent share of casual fans over the next couple of years. My guess is that the Sox spend in the FA market two years from now and field a respectable (maybe 85 wins) team in 2019 and become contenders in 2020. The Cubs will be on the downswing by then and the attention and fans will begin to return. That is a very reasonable prediction 2017 / 2018 = suck big time 2019 = return to respectability, finish .500 or better 2020/2021/2022 = Window to contend
  5. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 04:01 PM) And that right there is one of the many reasons why you could never be a GM. Totally agree That is like judging a pitcher solely on wins and ERA...
  6. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 03:58 PM) When did Jansen sign? Jansen is expected to sign a deal soon and has been offered over $80 mil / 5 years My main point is that takes the elite closers off the market, and makes 2/$24 for Robertson seem like a reasonable cost
  7. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 03:52 PM) I wish he were Andrew Friedman right about now. The recent Chapman and Jansen signings actually help the Sox from the standpoint of both limited closers on the market and it makes his 2 years, $24 million remaining contract seem far more palatable than it would have been 6 months ago for a team
  8. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 03:46 PM) Houston needs a TOP badly. They'd get mauled in the playoffs with McHugh and other clowns I'd hold out and wait for Houston to realize that they do not stack up well against the Indians or Red Sox starting pitching in a playoff series as they currently sit McCullers can't seem to stay healthy and Keuchel regressed significantly last season That rotation really really could use the stability Quintana would bring every 5th start
  9. QUOTE (heirdog @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 01:53 PM) Curious to know if Tim anderson was prospect eligible right now, where would he rank in top 100? His defense was arguably the most impressive thing in his 99 games at the mlb level posting a 1.2 DWAR Putting up 2.8 WAR overall in 99 games wwe would be looking at roughly a 4.2 WAR over a full season if he kept it up...a fringe all star Hypothetically I would say top 30 for sure, maybe even top 20 given the quality mlb performance. If he can develop a bit more patience at the plate he could be special
  10. QUOTE (peppers312 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 03:41 PM) pretty sure those are the first two stats i'm looking at if i need a closer bruh. Really?! FIP is a far better stat than ERA to begin with as it takes fielding out of the picture WHIP is also really important I would look at those before saves and ERA which can be skewed and don't tell me much about performance
  11. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 03:30 PM) I miss any new news or rumors on Davey boy? Saves and ERA are bad way to look at a reliever, I agree Peripheral stats like WHIP , hits, k's, walks, FIP all need to be considered Nate Jones is certainly a guy that could have trade value as either a closer or set up man He had a really good season and could be a sell high candidate
  12. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 02:03 PM) I think the addition of Devers would have made it a grand slam. Moncada/Devers/Kopech would have been an overpay from Boston's perspective That is 3 top thirty prospects for one player, the risk would be arguably too huge. The White Sox tried hard, but Boston knew they had the best offer on the table as nobody else was offering a true blue chip prospect along the lines of Moncada
  13. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) Good to see them selling pieces off individually in order to maximize the amount of talent brought back. However, I don't think Robertson has a ton of value. Robertson could be a great candidate to keep and deal at the deadline when contenders are always looking for bullpen help If he does well this year you could get a more solid return then than you could now. Likely not as much as Chapman or Miller brought back to the Yankees, but a better return than you would get right now
  14. QUOTE (peppers312 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 12:30 PM) sounds like they aren't getting Robertson then. i think once Jansen gets a deal, we'll get a better picture of where Robertson ends up. Robertson is not getting you Robles, you'd be lucky to land Feede straight up You would be fortunate right now to get a back end top 100 prospect at best in a trade, especially if a team takes on all of his remaining contract

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 12:12 PM) I guess what I'm wondering is this though - how much do we value this marginal upgrade: Pena .235 .273 .376 .650 Severino .271 .316 .337 .653 I realize Severino has shown well in some ML games and Penas was between AA and AAA and the AA numbers were better. But, why use Robertson on that if Pena is supposedly SEverino's defensive equal? Pena was a good pickup for his defense if anything. The bat is worthless, but we really really need some catching depth. I still think we need a veteran though
  16. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) #WhiteSox' David Robertson can block trades to: #Tigers, #Dodgers, #Mets, #Athletics, #Phillies. https://twitter.com/DevanFink/status/806914593507385344 We could likely get more for Robertson at the deadline, but I'd absolutely be willing to move him I wouldn't be shocked to see Jones come up in trade talks for teams needing setup or closer help
  17. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:50 AM) I will be, but I doubt most will. Most will see seven names acquired and expect that those seven names will all be contributing to the ML club in a significant way very soon. When that doesn't happen, they'll want heads to roll, when anyone who knows anything about this knows that we'll be lucky to get five of these guys to be key pieces moving forward, and three are about the closest thing you can get to a lock in prospects. Anyone who realizes that this is a game of attrition, and that by acquiring 15-20 of the best 150 prospects in baseball, they are hoping that about half of them work out, as well as the talent they already had in the minors as well as hoping for a solid-good haul in the next three drafts, two of which will likely have top 5 picks for the White Sox, should be fine. If all of that works out, they could have 60-80% of a playoff caliber roster that is very cheap and cost controlled heading into the 2018 offseason, which would give them the ability to splurge in that historic class and potentially bring playoff baseball to the South Side by 2019, just in time for the new TV deal. Fans just need to realize that 2019 might not even be realistic depending on how things continue to develop moving forward. I am prepared to suck for the next 2/3 seasons at a minimum, but at least it will be purposeful sucking Fans will be patient, they have gone through mediocre year after year with a boring team. A young and talented team in the future is much better

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 12:00 PM) Agreed. I hope we stay patient with all these guys. Almost wish we didn't rush Anderson and/or Fulmer. It would be nice for Anderson to develope the chemistry with these new guys, in particular Moncada since they are going to be staples in the middle infield for years to come. We did not have a shortstop, and Anderson is mlb ready I was really impressed with how he played defensively and really removed any doubts about his ability to stick at shortstop. If he can develop a bit more patience at the plate he will be an excellent player for us
  19. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:40 AM) I like Musgrove, they should put him in, too if no Bregman. I also like Musgrove, but he has been injury prone I don't think you are getting Martes/Tucker/Reed/Musgrove If Houston offered that, Quintana would be in a 'stros jersey already

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:56 AM) I agree Servino doesn't do much for me, catcher is such a hard postion to find that "guy" behind the plate. Between delveleping a bat along with good defensive, framing, and calling a game for an entire staff you wonder why every team in the leagues try's to hold onto these guys. Catching is at a huge premium because very few with a decent bat can stick at the position defensively. That is why we absolutely must be patient and try to develop Collins as a catcher
  21. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:33 AM) I guess they're not that interested in winning it all. Oh well, their loss. Houston's starting pitching is shaky and not enough to contend in my opinion A package of Martes/Reed/Tucker/Stubbs would get it done for me in exchange for Q I don't feel that is unreasonable to request considering they are not putting Bregman in the deal
  22. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 11:28 AM) Sean Sears on twitter: "Source: Asking price for Chris Archer and Jose Quintana is too high for #Astros, "seems unlikely" that either will end up in Houston" http://tomahawktake.com/2016/12/06/2-moves...ake-after-sale/ This is one of the dumbest proposals that I have seen^^^ wow it's bad
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 09:57 AM) The thing is, if Eaton is anywhere near a 5 or 6 WAR player the next 5 seasons, he probably was worth more in trade than Sale for the extra 2 years at the same total cash. Eaton, Q, those guys are undervalued by many, including people whose job it is to know these things. I was watching MLBN and someone was making a case why Eaton is not worth anything near Cutch in trade. That's just being lazy. Rizzo said his analytics people and old school scouting people were the same on Eaton. It's a huge asset to give up. I hope it works out. Hahn is going to see all his bargain basement team friendly deals go to other teams this off season. I doubt he has much luck having 3 or 4 of those types of contracts on one roster again. BTW, why do the call them the Winter Meetings when it isn't technically Winter? Our "bargain basement" team friendly deals go away, yes. But our payroll is going to be next to nothing after we deal Robertson, Frazier, Melky, Quintana, etc. We will be entering an amazing free agent class with loads of money to spend on talent. Most of our players will be cost controlled giving us great flexibility for when we are ready to compete again
  24. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 08:15 AM) I don't think anyone really cares about the 2017 offense because this team won't contend until 2019 at the earliest. 2017 should be viewed as a tanking year for Seth Beer. When is Beer eligible to be drafted? Sign me up for tanking

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 09:19 AM) Yah, was a bit surprised to not see him added to the Nats deal with Robertson going back. I think it signals that they either were still shooting for Chapman and Jansen and/or want to keep Severino. Like you said, they don't have much else. Teams do not like to part with catching depth, especially a contending team like the Nats. Since Ramos is gone they will need depth and likely want to keep Severino around Plus, I think Robertson could potentially be worth more
