that's the good news. the bad news is all Kenny Kool is asking for is your Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez, Brent Lillibridge, Jon Adkins or Michael Dubee.

Don't know that there were any superiors offers for Swishie. but the guys he got in return were worthless for this season. And, let's remember who thought it was such a great idea to trade for Swishie one year earlier: Kenny Kool. Yes, he won a world series. Yes, he is aggressive and wants to win. But Williams also deserves some of the blame for this mess. Talking about a team with a $95-$100 payroll. And it hasn't worked. Plenty of blame to go around. Just don't forget to give some to Williams. He should not be bulletproof.

Marquez will never be a major-league pitcher and Kenny Kool was talking him up as the fifth starter, another Jon Garland, before the season. Hardly. Betemit lost this team at least two or maybe three games with his inept fielding. Too soon to make a call on Nunez. Vaz needed to be moved because of the way he faltered down the stretch last year. But he's miles better than what we replaced him with. Flowers might turn out to be a player. Hope he does. But let's see him do it. But there is considerable debate about his ability to be an effective big-league catcher. And Lillibridge is a total joke who has gotten way too many at bats in the big leagues this season. Gilmore and the other guy we got from the Braves are unknowns. Tony Pena has showed nothing in the heat the pennant race. Rios will be the center fielder and probably be a league average player. The problem is that it won't be long until he is making well beyond league average money. Peavy should be a stud. But getting him crippled our rotation for this year. When a team starts Jose Contreras and Freddy Garcia in four of seven games against the Red Sox and Yankees, that's a Kenny Kool problem, not an Ozzie Guillen problem.

should be a fire Kenny Williams poll. He got garbage (marquez and Betemit) for Nick Swisher. He got mostly garbage (maybe Flowers comes through) for Vazquez, who is having an excellent season. He got garbage for Brandon Allen. He added Rios, who has quickly shown us why Toronto wanted him gone for nothing in return. He added an injured starting pitcher (Peavy) while leaving the 09 staff badly short-handed, triggering this slide. He had a dream that either Colon or Jose could help. He's had a very, very, very bad year at GM.

kind of hard to believe because NOBODY was calling him a top defensive catcher last year. They were calling him a guy who might have to move to first base or DH. Saw him play in AAA severall weeks ago. Looks a little stiff and mechanical behind the plate.

is rios is coming, they'd have to make room for him somewhere, but I can't imagine the core vets would be happy to clear space by getting rid of a teammate they really seem to like.

The fascination with Lillibridge, betemit and Fields is one reason we're 2 1/2 games out, instead of in the lead. Lillibridge is not a major league baseball player. Period. Hits for low average with a lot of strikeouts. Lovely.

What I don't like is that Kenny consistently overpays in these trades. We traded Swisher and Vaz and got table scraps. maddening to me.

it sounds good. But let's remember they are all pitchers. Health is no guarantee.

Don't forget we also got "Cy" Marquez. If Nunez doesn't give us something, we got nothing but salary relief for dumping Swisher. And I'll still need more convincing we got anything of real value for Vazquez. Flowers has to be That Guy because Lillibridge is a joke. Might be better than Kenny Kool doesn't make any moves. I know he's had his share of hits with Thornton for Borchard and Gavin for Freddy and Danks for McCarty. But the work he did last winter so far has done nothing to help this team.

has anybody seen enough of Morel to say if he has the defensive skills to play 3b. Like to see him finish the year at Birmingham, but that is unlikely with Dayan in his path. Dayan, Morel or Retherford, one of those guys needs to take over at 3b by 2011
