    2014 TV thread

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) Also heard South Park was pretty good tonight, excited to watch that in an hour. It was terrific. Aside from the Jerry Jones cameo, the thing I enjoyed most is that it seemed like Matt and Trey saw an opportunity to just abuse their right to slap the Redskins logo anywhere they could.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) To me, PK's grand slam in Game 2 of the WS is the most excited I've ever been watching a sporting event. I'm happy PK is getting the recognition he deserves this weekend. Ditto. I bought tickets to the Saturday and Sunday games way back when they went on sale as a contingency of not knowing when any ceremony might happen. Really excited for this weekend. I'm not crying. I just have something in my eye.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) Also importantly, looking at the Tigers, they could be looking at a fair amount of slippage. If they lose Scherzer, they really can't replace him. Age may well be catching up with guys like Miguel and Verlander. Torii Hunter is a free agent. The Royals will lose Shields too. It will take some sleight of hand but the Sox are closer than people think.
  4. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 07:20 PM) Buehrle- 6 shutout innings on the Mariners so far. 14 years, 30+ starts, 200+ innings, 10+ wins Congrats to him - still the man.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) The problem is even if he goes out on his own he'll never make as much money or be able to hire as many people as with the ESPN backing. That said, I'd love if he removed himself from tv and went back to writing and podcasts. He has all the money he'll ever need and the other outlets would fight over him if he quit right now. He'd have a gig by tonight. Maybe I'm being naive, but I really think he's done at ESPN this time. He never sounded so pissed about something as this Goodell press conference. By the way, he breached ESPN's "journalistic standards" during a weekly podcast where he guesses gambling lines that's been running for like six years in a row. Wonder why the NFL never distanced itself from that. What a racket. The NFL has no f***ing shame and neither does ESPN.
  6. QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Sale always seems to get a little amped up facing the Tigers.
  7. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) This is exactly what was going on. Watch the video on mlb.com. You can clearly read Sale yelling "Gonna look out there, huh?" Pointing to the same place he was pointing to the previous inning. Then, Cooper and Scherzer got into it walking off the field. Gaah I wish I could watch this game, I love this stuff. I love when teams hate each other. Sale always seems to get a little amped up facing the Tigers.
  8. A simple assessment 2014 White Sox starting pitching: 4.27 ERA, 25th in MLB 2014 White Sox relief pitching: 4.30 ERA, 28th in MLB 2014 Addison Reed pitching: 4.40 ERA, bottom 10% of qualified relievers So can we stop saying Reed makes this a .500 team, or a competitive team, or a much better team? Can we be at least a little bit grounded in reality?
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) yes, but he didnt receive the league-wide complimentary handjob on the way out Yeah Jeets.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 10:09 AM) The elephant in the rotation remains Danks. If we could have gotten rid of him with limited cost, then spending in the rotation becomes obvious. But as long as we're stuck with him, the comparison winds up being a signing in the rotation versus Noesi, not a signing in the rotation versus Carroll, if we're leaving a Rodon slot. John Danks is the problem there. Noesi right now is fine at the back of the rotation. If we could slot in a legit pitcher into Danks's spot with Danks's money, that would work, but if Danks is going to get a rotation slot because of his contract, then we're sorta stuck. As long as Danks is in that rotation and performing at this level, you'll be able to say this is a weak rotation in a WAR sense. Again, not such a problem to me. I think I'll leave it at that.
  11. QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) Must you only look at the construction of this team through the frame of WAR? To be fair, I brought up the total WAR of the rotation.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) People can hold out hope, but when you hit .199 with 164 strikeouts in year 2 of AAA , you are going to be an exception if you become useful at the big league level. That is a factual statement. /inserting myself into this subject because I'm an idiot
  13. I understand opportunity cost and the win curve and all that, so what other spots are there that we would reasonably spend on? Catcher - we already have an average one and the only expensive one is going to be prohibitively expensive. Second - will be filled internally Third - internally Outfield - we can spend here DH - we can spend here (or we'll see a rotating DH situation) Bullpen - we can spend here but it would be ill-advised Upgrading the rotation would seem give us the most marginal benefit. Our starters amassed 11.9 WAR this year and 10.4 of it was from 2 spots. This is not some overcrowded rotation, even if you throw in Rodon. I think we fundamentally disagree about Noesi's potential. To me he is not somebody to be altering decisions for, so it still looks like starting pitching is the most obvious place to spend.
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) I just don't think that the cost that will be required will be worth it. There's no long-term value and, given his concussion history and streakiness, there's no guarantee that there's good short-term value either. Based on his cost and what he'd be brought in to do, you have to play him and cross your fingers because he's your answer. This isn't like the Ethier suggestion where he's signed for 3 more years and can play the other 3 outfield positions along with 1B, and you'd likely have some of the contract picked up as well. Of those B level prospects I listed - there are a few others in the organization too - I could find a match for Ethier. It may also not take a B level prospect to get Ethier, coming off a down year. If the Sox are going to get an older LHB, I think that's the most logical guy to target. Ethier is very logical because of his position, but if he's washed up then we just have another albatross. Depending on how much money LA throws in. And maybe he'll be fine. He wouldn't be the first guy to have a crappy age-32 season and then rebound. Jayson Werth comes to mind. He could thrive again with regular playing time. So many if's. This is why I'm not a GM.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 06:26 PM) The White Sox clearly need a starting pitcher right now, I agree with this, but I despise the idea of signing anyone to even a 1 year deal if they think Rodon can appear in the big leagues before the end of 2015. No matter what they do they should know exactly how he gets to the big leagues next year and that can't be "relying on someone to get hurt". I'd rather go with Caroll/Rienzo out of the gates for a month, lose games, and then have Rodon take over, than sign someone to a 1 year deal and then have Rodon spend the year in the minors because of the big money guy we signed. That's why I kinda think Masterson makes sense. After this season he should be cheap enough that we won't feel bad if he's replaced in June with Rodon if pitching poorly. If we're taking it as a given that Rodon will be ready for prime time once we're past Super 2, how about he takes Noesi's spot? Everyone seems to be slotting Noesi ahead of Danks on the depth chart because their expectations are light years apart. But just put their seasons side-by-side, independent of any salary or handedness concerns, and there isn't really a compelling reason to anoint Noesi. He's not that special, you guys, and there's a good chance this is the best he'll ever be. So even if you can't move Danks, I bet there's room for Rodon. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 06:54 PM) I don't think Ethier in LF, Viciedo at DH is much of an upgrade over Viciedo in LF, Dunn at DH....and spending that money on Santana when we might be able to get similar production out of Bassitt or Beck, for example. If we were getting younger, that would be one thing, but Ethier and Dunn are both closer to retirement than their prime productive years. (Of course, you can also make the assumption that another bat would be brought in to face RH pitching at DH/LF). I strongly doubt Bassitt or Beck could give the production Santana would. I'm not all-in on Santana or anything, especially for much more than the 2/$25 figure I threw out there. The home run rate would still have me worried. I'd rather have him than Masterson, and I'd rather have him than James Shields, I know that for certain.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 08:31 AM) For Justin Morneau? I think you're crazy. I agree, I would never give up all four of those guys for Morneau. Maybe if this were five years ago. I'd have difficulty taking the plunge for any of the players you named. I'm closest on Montas because of the org's ability to find pitchers and his injury issues creating just enough worry. But I guess I don't want Morneau badly enough. Not that I know if that's what it would take; I'm terrible at figuring out guys' trade value.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) This is how I see it: Here's what's working against Justin Morneau -He's 34 years old -He'd have to be traded for -He's at his highest value in 6 seasons -He's been really bad in 3 of the past 4 season -He only plays 1B, limiting bench versatility -He's one blow to the head away from being done forever and ever Here's what's working for Justin Morneau -He's left handed -He's been good this year Frankly, even knowing how poor he's been in the majors, I'd rather give Andy Wilkins a shot as opposed to trading for Justin Morneau. Trading for a 1B right now is just not ideal, no matter the cost. This is where I can't go along with you. I don't want the Sox to suck anymore, and giving Andy Wilkins lots of plate appearances probably means we're resigned to continue sucking. I think the Sox are ready to stop sucking. The cost of Morneau won't be high because other GM's see the con list. If it is too high, move on. Otherwise you take the plunge and hope he can fill a need. And if not, you've lost out on some B-level prospect.
  18. QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) but again, using the resources will be a waste. there are probably other options in the fa market that may be a good option. also trades for a #4-5 pitcher until Rodon can be inserted. There may be better options. A lot of them will cost more. If we're playing in a lower-level market and we're talking starting pitchers, which is one of the most obvious areas this team needs improvement, I'd rather have Santana than Masterson. Masterson's name is thrown around all the time here but he really doesn't have **** on Santana.
  19. If I could make Reed a setup guy like Wade Davis, I'd absolutely do trade-backsies.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) I would. The last thing we need to do is waste our resources on a mediocre starting pitcher. That's fair. I think he's probably better than mediocre though.
  21. Haven't seen Ervin Santana's name thrown around very much. What do folks think about him? His ceiling is unspectacular and he'll be 32 next year. But while other teams will be hurling themselves off the peak of Mount Scherzer, some of the best deals of any offseason are for guys a couple tiers down. He's still a righty that can give you good innings. The thing that would make me nervous is his gopheritis; he gave up a lot of homers in Anaheim so bringing him to the Cell could be a mistake. I wouldn't be terribly upset if I saw the Sox had signed him for 2/$25M. Could he be had for that and would you give it to him?
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 02:12 PM) Geez, this is like being a Cub fan: Wait til next year. How long are the Sox going to waste Sale and now Abreu? Do what it takes to win a s*** division NOW. If that's all the Sox can spend, Jerry should cut parking in half NOW. Also, trading Alexei is a ridiculous idea. Do some of you WANT to finish last again? Think about how bad the Sox will be at short without Alexei. It will be embarrassingly bad. A whole season of L. Garcia at short? My gosh. Pencil them in for last place for sure with no bat at all there. I'm against trading Alexei too, but Leury will certainly not be starting at short, they'd plug in a prospect. Which is not what he is.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 01:55 PM) But they're also not going to be desperate to cut payroll if they actually do trade Tulo and CarGo this offseason. They would kind of have to be bowled over. That said, there's also a lowered incentive to keep an aging veteran coming off a career rebirth/renaissance season if there's little or no thought to competing in 2015. This would also put Michael Cuddyer in play as a possible DH (if they won't give up Morneau) who could be paired with a left-handed OFer. That's what I'm thinking. If they really are looking to shift Rosario (and I'm just going off what was stated earlier, I haven't read that anywhere myself), then Morneau has nowhere to play and they'll basically have to move him. Cuddyer's a free agent regardless. Don't tell Hawk.
  24. QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) Not sure why it HAS to be an OFer, and with that said, the guy I have my eye on is Justin Morneau. Rockies wanna move Rosario to 1B which makes Justin available. I'd be in favor of that. Splits show that his numbers aren't just a product of Coors and he has an option for 2016. I imagine the price to get him wouldn't be too high.
  25. The Sox are sitting at at 10-9 in September. Robin's driving us into the ditch before the finish line again.
