If we’re trading Kimbrel for another bad salary, we should not have picked up the option and used the money towards someone good instead.

I just noticed that JD Martinez has until today to opt out of his contract. I thought that has to happen by a certain date? If he opts out, Red Sox should be able to offer a QO (like Reds just did to Castellanos).

I personally think they offer him the QO. I would risk it for a year. I would rather do that than offer a big multi year deal.
