Sox have "flexibility" to add "long term pieces"
Bob Sacamano replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Oh gotcha. In fact, it would seem to open up a slight "need" (if that's what you want to say) considering there's been discussion on what they would do to fit Machado into the mix. A guy spending possibly half a season on the DL (or more) would pave the way without needing to trade. -

I've read suggestions that Didi can come back as a DH next year. Or even just rotate the DH so Andujar, Machado, Didi, and Torres can stay fresh and get a day off without having to lose their bats. -

Didi is having TJ surgery on his throwing arm and expected back at "some point during the season." https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/10/didi-gregorius-tommy-john-surgery-yankees.html -
Robertson and/or Soria reunion? Brad Brach? Sergio Romo? Ryan Madson or Santiago Casilla (both 38) on one year deals? Trevor Rosenthal on an incentive based one year deal so he can prove he's healthy? There's a lot of veteran options out there this off-season and they should have no issue adding -3 to the mix. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/2018-19-mlb-free-agents.html

Yeah I tend to agree. As the top catcher on the market, I saw he was projected to get about 4/$60m.
-
Yeah I meant to say they will tender him a contract.
-
Sometimes even more like Palka. Dude just got a shot with us because we are rebuilding and look at him now: probably DH on opening day next year.
-
While I agree that others should see playing time instead, I think the front office will tender him a contract.

Where have you seen this? -
Have the rotation be Rodon, Lopez, Giolito, a bounce-back veteran type with some upside (NOT Shields as he had no trade value this year), and then a battle between Stephens, Guerrero, Fulmer, anyone else worth a look next year for the 5th spot.
-
I've read that they are only listening on some rental players at the beginning of the off-season and then based on the offers, deciding if they will rebuild or try to contend. I mean, I guess a team in that position could middle it? Trade the guys with one year left for prospects and also try to sign free agents?

Yeah I'm not sure he will go to free agency. Rockies are known to lock up their franchise players. -

It wasn't but it isn't a bad plan. Lose out on Machado, sign Donaldson to a one year deal, try again the next year with Arenado. -

Fine with me! -
I still see no way Avi is non-tendered. Not saying that's what I want but the organization has stuck with him this long so who knows. I expect him to be on the team next year.

I've been saying this about Donaldson. IF they go after Machado and IF they don't sign him, I'm cool with him signing a pillow contract with the Sox on a one-year deal. Also wouldn't cost a draft pick like Moustakas would have last year. -

I agree with most of what you are saying, but I think Rizzo is the one who stays forever. -

Came here to say the same thing. Thanks. -

You have me intrigued. -

I kind of have him pegged there as well. It just means they wouldn't retain Judge long-term (most likely) but you would have Judge, Stanton, and Machado in the same lineup for what, 4 years? Then they deal Andujar or Didi (1 year left) for pitching. -

Not sure about that. Both those teams reset their luxury tax penalties this year. -
I literally thought to myself earlier: "Will we ever see a team have a 12 or 13-man staff strictly built with relievers that can go multiple innings?" Maybe if it were have 2 really good SP that could pitch 6 or 7 + every 1st and 3rd or 4th turn in the rotation.
-
Reading your first comment, I was going to disagree with you because I thought you were referring to him being that bad. But your second sentence made me actually agree with you.
-
Probably should have waited for it to bomb before making these comments.
-
Yeah it sounds like they'll move him, whether that be as a non-tender or to a team in a trade for peanuts like the Tigers or some other newer rebuilding team. Controlled for 3 more years.
