Wrong would be saying that he signed a contract extension only for him not to. It's like when jump on people reporting that 2 teams are discussing a trade for Player A, only for Player A to get dealt somewhere else. Everyone says the report is wrong just because the trade didn't happen. Is the report wrong? No. Player A just got traded somewhere else. So that's not a very good example of being "wrong."

It does seem like a negotiation tactic to get the Sox and Phillies to up their offers. But also wouldn't be shocked if it ended up being true since I've expected him to go there for more than a year now.

Yeah the Yankees were interested in Alonso before. With their current options being a Bird/Voit platoon, Alonso still makes sense for them, even if their interest was purely about landing Machado before.
