Is there a debate going on that we don't need to sign him because we have too much talent? Or am I completely misreading this? The team doesn't have any MLB stars on it currently, so no reason to give up on landing one now.

Pretty sure there is room for both talking about the current roster. C Castillo, McCann 1B Abreu, Alonso 2B Sanchez 3B Moncada SS Anderson LF Eloy CF Jay RF Palka And then 3 spots for Engel, Rondon, and Leury. Edit: not going to lie, that was disappointing to type out.

Well I don't know what there is to understand exactly. They clearly think Moncada will move to 3B eventually so why not now in a year that doesn't matter? Whether you agree with that or not is a different argument. I do agree with you that he should be at 2B though.

I think the plan would be for him to play 3B if we do not get Machado. I could see Rondon getting time at 2B this year if Moncada does make the switch full-time. I can't find anything on him, but has Rondon played more middle infield than 3B in his minor league career? And if so, is he good?
