QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 04:07 PM) Amazing he lasted as long as he did. Dude just looks like a barista. Very hipsterish like he should be hanging out by his job by the Chicago River haha working around that area, I see plenty of people like him.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:59 PM) Castillo signs with the O's. 1 year / $6M, with a $7M player option for year 2. Not a bad deal. Even though he's pretty bad defensively, I would have loved that deal. Yeah could have maybe flipped him. Still want Plawecki or trade Robertson for a package including Severino.

Could you root for Sox losses
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:58 PM) I'm talking someone like Matt Davidson hitting 190 in July with 15 errors. Obviously proven MLB talent like Jose and Todd I'll be rooting for to maximize their trade value. I mean I'll root for Matt too if he's crushing it but the Sox have quite a few replacement level options to trot out this year that are no longer prospects they are just guys. Actually, is Shuck still on the roster? He'd be a perfect CF. I don't think he is but Shuck in center and Garcia in right would lead to a lot of extra bases for the opponent. Actually, Melky in left would make us a terrible outfield all around in that case haha

QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:39 PM) You're too young to remember when these same posts were made about Anderson, Sweeney, Fields...ect. Not saying it won't happen, but just sayin... Haha so true...just gotta keep adding more young bats.

White Sox sign Derek Holland
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) You're saying this in a thread about a pitcher the Sox signed today, hah. Holland was the last thing I heard about that I could say publicly. I expect the Sox to continue to add 1 year contracts. I was more referring to trades but yeah I see the irony haha

White Sox sign Derek Holland
He gets a mill when he reaches 150 innings and another mill when he reaches 200. Best case scenario, we pay him about $4 mil dealing him to a team in July (about 2/3 of the way through the season). Worst case, he's dfa'd at some point and we owe him $6 million.

Could you root for Sox losses
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:07 PM) This is sig worthy. Well said, in few words. I want the future guys to do well, the guys they are just trotting out there with no future I hope they suck as much as possible. This is a true throwaway year except development wise. So we can't flip them for anything? Seems like there's a decent chance Frazier and Abreu will both be here and I would say neither really has a future here. Lawrie and Robertson may still even be here.

White Sox sign Derek Holland
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) Tyson Ross and Greg Holland are desired assets. They're going to sign with contending teams because they are going to have multiple options. It's easy to point out the guys the Sox should sign for the rebuild but the most desired "flip" candidates are going to sign with contenders. Watch Ross go to the Cubs and Holland to the Nationals. I do think both of these moves will happen. And rabbit, you have anything for us? We're dying here lol

I would like them to try to buy low on Plawecki. He may be odd-man out with d'Arnaud and Rivera behind the plate for the Mets. Or sign Jeff Mathis. I'm just looking at defensive first types to pair with Narvaez behind the plate. Someone who could also work with Collins in Spring Training (if Collins is in big league camp which I kind of doubt).

Otani to be posted in 2017 Offseason
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:48 PM) And even if the post him, he might think twice and realize it would be better to wait. Then you have no July 2nd signees and have scraps left if anything. Too risky for the Sox IMO. Yep. Too risky for a team that should be hording young talent

Otani to be posted in 2017 Offseason
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:43 PM) A poor performance could make it pretty obvious. The entire thing is fascinating. The posting fee is maxed at $20 million. If you want to offer him all your bonus allotment you can't sign anyone on July 2nd, and will have to trade for extra funds. Then you have to make sure his team will post him and he will agree to come over. And the player is probably giving up a ton of money by not waiting, and letting every team have a shot at him. Huge risk he doesn't choose you. Huge reward if he does. Yeah I guess this is a big risk. Watching everyone else sign guys and then Otani doesn't even come over.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) Probably could sign back on a minor league deal. Arms are arms. Especially lefty. Random but sort of related (your lefty comment). Did Boone Logan sign yet? We should sign Logan and G. Holland taking them off of the market and then deal Jennings and Robertson.

2016-17 free agency thread (NON WHITE SOX RELATED)
Orioles sign Wellington Castillo to 1 year deal with a second year player option. Basically a 2 year deal for $13 million.

Clarification on Service Time
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) Service time is service time. It doesn't matter if it's a September call up or not. A player hits free agency after 6 full seasons of service time. 1 full season is considered 172 days of service time. The season is roughly 183 days but a player is only allowed to accrue 172 service days per season. Moncada, Lopez and Giolito clocks have all essentially started but you don't accrue service time if you are in the minors. Current service time- Moncada - 31 days Giolito - 39 days Lopez - 44 days Baseball reference lists all 3 as being free agency eligible after 2022 but that is going on the assumption that since they have already been in the Majors that they will be in the Majors at the start of the year. For the Sox to change that free agency date until after the 2023 season they would need to wait until it was late enough in the year that none of them have accrued a total of 172 service days before the end of this season. Date on which they can be called up to give the Sox a "7th year" and move the free agency date until after 2023- Moncada - May 14 Giolito - May 22 Lopez - May 27 I think all 3 will be called up shortly after those dates hit so long as they are playing well and the Sox feel they are ready. No point in letting them stay down in the minors dominating when they could get valuable Major League experience. This post is beautiful and one that should be pinned to the top.

White Sox sign Derek Holland
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) It wasn't $30 million, but all the crappy free agents the Sox signed last offseason was a significant sum of money. Mets also had the fortune of Cuddyer retiring in the middle of that whole process. That gave them what, $13 mill more to work with?
-
White Sox sign Derek Holland
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:51 PM) Perhaps I used the wrong word. I meant unproductive. If the player performs, they deserve a nice contract. The Sox commonly give money to guys that don't perform to expectations. He technically is only signed for $6 million if he's bad. If he makes $8 mill due to reaching incentives, it's a steal and he's likely dealt to a contender.

Clarification on Service Time
QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:26 PM) Apologize in advance for the dumb question, but I was hoping to gain some clarity on the service times of Giolito, Lopez, and Fulmer. Baseball reference has all 3 hitting free agency in 2023, is this accounting for them likely spending most of 2017 in the minors or would they gain extra control if they stayed down there until, say, September? I know Moncada's clock hasn't started yet since he was a September call up, but for these other guys, it would almost make more sense to leave them in the minors all season if it means more control, no? Yeah depending on when they call them up this year, I believe they would have them for the remainder of this year plus 6 more.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:05 PM) This doesn't feel like posturing to me. This sounds more like the Astros aren't willing to meet the Sox's asking price & talks are dead as of now. Yeah I don't get any sense of posturing here.

White Sox sign Derek Holland
QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 12:50 PM) Dude, $8M is nothing. If you think that is expensive on the FA market, the Sox stand no chance of turning this thing around. Right haha

White Sox sign Derek Holland
QUOTE (GermanSoxFan @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 12:48 PM) Can't see any downside to this. If he pitches well, the Sox might be able to trade him and if not, eh. We need some warm bodies to pitch. Worst case scenario is he loses us more games and brings us closer to a higher draft pick lol
