The White Sox will honor Mark Buehrle on June 24th by retiring his #56 jersey during a special tribute before first pitch.

It'll be really hard throughout the years to get players to lay off #56.

Good for him. I loved Buehrle.

Hope they do the same for Sale at some point.

This makes me extremely happy.

Yeah I don't see it. Wasn't here long enough. Not enough accomplishments either.

Mark Buehrle is my favorite Sox pitcher of all time so I will be there.

7+ years on the team, 5X All Star, single season Sox K record aren't accomplishments? Lol ok.

7 years just doesn't seem like enough to be number retired worthy. Just my take on it and I'm sure most will agree.

If Harold Baines has a retired number, of course Buehrle will too. They kinda set a bar there in 1989.

Sale was close in my book but not there. No postseason (not his fault) and not enough years. I think if he played 2 more years with us then you have to retire it at that point.

Absolutely not. Doesn't come close to warrant getting his number retired.

Have to make the trip for this.

So then you're cool with Black Jack having his number retired, too? He won a Cy Young with the Sox after all...

His stats were nowhere as good as Sale, so no. The Cy Young he has is nice but Sale arguably should've won the award in 2014 and 2016 as well.

McDowell was definitely a great pitcher for the Sox, but Sale is in a different tier IMO.

Mike is really showing his age here.

And well deserved for Buehrle. No doubt I'll be there.

Agreed.

I don't want to derail the thread any further but I don't think some of you guys realize how good Sale was.

Buehrle had the advantage of being with the team for much longer, having playoff success here, and not being a hot head, but pound for pound I think Sale is way more talented than he ever was.

Bryan Ward also wore #56, so he'll be excited.

It's not really about talent. We all know how great Sale was lol he's just not worthy of having his number retired. Simple as that.

Some things are about more than stats. Mark Buehrle is absolutely a guy you retire a jersey for. In addition to what he did on the field, he was the consummate teammate, he was the face of the organization off of the field, and he never gave anyone a minute of problems.

They didn't give out 49 or 1 or 23 this season probably as a one year nod, but of course Sale doesn't deserve that honor.

And Carlos Quentin was a more talented hitter than Paul Konerko. I think you know whose number will be retired out of those two.

I wouldn't agree with that, lol.

Good catch. (and I should've said Albert Belle, but the point still applies)

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Buehrle and definitely think retiring his number is warranted. I don't want you to think that I disagree with retiring his number because that's not the case at all.

Good catch.

I knew what you meant lol just needed to point it out.
