With the ‘Chance The Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Day!’ concert today at U.S. Cellular Field, I came up with an idea to name every concert throughout the history of both ballparks: White Sox Park (1910 – 1912, 1962 – 1975) Comiskey Park (1913 – 1961, 1976 – 1990) (New) Comiskey Park (1991 – 2002) U.S. Cellular Field (2003 – 2016) guaranteed Rate Field (2016 – ) If anyone sees any errors, incomplete information, or missing concerts, please let me know. I also want to hear any interesting stories if you attended any of these concerts. I am only including major concerts where the ballpark was rented out by a promoter when there was not a home baseball game. Mini concerts or video performances before / after baseball games are not counted. Live performances on small stages outside the park, or on the street and parking lots do not count. Other sporting events (football, soccer, professional wrestling, and boxing) are not included. But I decided to include roller derby and Pastors Joel & Victoria Osteen’s gathering. The internet is terrific for finding historical information and photos taken at previous concerts, so I am providing some insight and interesting links: 2016 September 24, 2016 ‘Chance The Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Day!’ Performers: Chance The Rapper / Skrillex / John Legend / Alicia Keys / Tyler The Creator / Lil Wayne / 2 Chainz / Young Thug / Lil Uzi Vert / Francis and the Lights 2011 August 6, 2011 ‘America’s Night of Hope 2011’ Pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen I believe the event was televised live on TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network). I found wonderful photos at this website: http://www.ronwyattphotos.com/night-of-hop...icago/_RON7635/ 2003 August 13, 2003 Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band 2002 September 13, 2002 Rolling Stones / The Pretenders 1984 October 12 – 14, 1984 (3 nights) The Jacksons Victory Tour 1983 July 23, 1983 The Police / Joan Jett and the Blackhearts / A Flock Of Seagulls / The Fixx / Simple Minds Ministry / MTV videos shown between sets Simple Minds cancelled and was replaced by Chicago band Ministry. A couple concert posters here: http://www.shelleyvision.net/classics/pages/police.htm http://www.thepolicewiki.org/Police_wiki/i...ter_Dietmar.jpg Here’s a Paul Natkin photo of Joan Jett at Comiskey Park (click on the arrows at center of photo to expand): http://www.gettyimages.com/license/481627553 The Fixx, taken from the stage with a nice view of the crowd: http://www.gettyimages.com/license/599013749 Chicago Tribune’s review of the “rock music extravaganza”: http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1983/07...attery-of-bands July 24, 1983 Simon and Garfunkel Click on the square photo to view full poster: https://twitter.com/chicago_history/status/...370631974481921 1979 August 5, 1979 ‘The Loop’s Day in the Park’ Journey / Santana / Thin Lizzy / Eddie Money / Molly Hatchet I am surprised this concert wasn’t cancelled or moved, because the same radio station (WLUP) was involved that partnered with the White Sox for the Disco Demolition Night fiasco, held just a few weeks earlier on July 12th. Midge Ure was a member of Thin Lizzy at the time. Journey’s performance was recorded for a national syndicated radio broadcast, which is available on an unofficial CD, currently for sale at Amazon. Journey’s lead singer, Steve Perry, became a White Sox fan who attended 2005 post season games and the Championship rally and parade after Sox players adopted the Journey tune ‘Don’t Stop Believin’'. Concert ad for ‘The Loop’s Day in the Park’. Doors open at 7 AM, and first band starts at 9 AM (LOL!): http://www.shelleyvision.net/classics/page...opdayinpark.htm Some Thin Lizzy photos and souvenirs from ‘The Loop’s Day in the Park’: http://www.thinlizzyguide.com/tours/dates/1979/790805.htm August 18, 1979 ‘Chicago Jam 1’ Beach Boys / Atlanta Rhythm Section / Pure Prairie League / Sha Na Na / Blondie I heard that under 10,000 tickets were sold for ‘Chicago Jam 1’, and the Atlanta Rhythm Section did not appear. Attendance was much better on the 2nd day. WLUP was not involved with either show. Radio partner for ‘Chicago Jam 2’ was 95 ½ WMET. August 19, 1979 ‘Chicago Jam 2’ Foghat / Rush / The Tubes / Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes / Roadmaster I found some great, up close fan photos of Rush at this link: http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/concer...-08.19.1979.php Here are Paul Natkin’s pro shots of Foghat at Comiskey Park. This one is actually Dave Peverett and Rod Price (not Craig MacGregor) possibly jamming to “Sweet Home Chicago” : http://www.gettyimages.com/license/570510611 1978 August 5, 1978 ‘Summer Jam 1’ Aerosmith / Foreigner / AC/DC / Frank Marino & Mahogony Rush / Walter Egan Aerosmith returned to Comiskey Park for a 2nd time, after originally headlining the 1976 ‘World Series Of Rock’ fire concert. AC/DC, which was mostly unknown in America at the time, had played the previous night at the nearby International Amphitheater, opening for ‘Alvin Lee & Ten Years Later’. AC/DC returned to the Chicago area for a 3rd time on September 14th, 1978, a club show at B’Ginnings in Schaumburg. Another great Paul Natkin photo. Here is Mick Jones of Foreigner along with a nice view of the crowd: http://www.gettyimages.com/license/503256556 This is my favorite picture. Photographer Dean Simmon captured Angus Young of AC/DC as he travels through the Comiskey Park crowd during “Let There Be Rock”. I’m not sure if Angus is sitting on the shoulders of a roadie or singer Bon Scott. Check out the smiling girl wearing sunglasses! At the time nobody knows that 20 years in the future, at a new park built directly across the street, another AC/DC song titled “Thunderstruck” will be heard on the P.A. at the start of every Chicago White Sox home game. http://deansimmonarchives.com/ssp/p.php?a=...mp;m=1393101491 August 19, 1978 ‘Summer Jam 2’ Eagles / Steve Miller Band / Pablo Cruise Here is an aerial photo of Comiskey Park which I believe was taken on the day of this concert (go to bottom of this link): http://flyingsock.com/OldComiskey/VeecksReturn.htm September 2, 1978 ‘Summer Jam 3’ – CANCELLED? Boston / Cheap Trick / Eddie Money I think this concert was cancelled because I can not find any information on the internet. Here is the ad for the entire 1978 ‘Summer Jam’ series: http://www.shelleyvision.net/classics/pages/wsbw.htm 1976 July 10, 1976 ‘World Series of Rock #1’ Aerosmith / Jeff Beck with The Jan Hammer Group / Derringer featuring Rick Derringer / Stu Daye During the performance of Jeff Beck with The Jan Hammer Group, two fires started around the same time at the upper deck of Comiskey Park, sending out huge clouds of black smoke. The concert continued, however the 2 remaining concerts scheduled during the summer of 1976 were cancelled or moved. Major outdoor concerts in Chicago in 1977 were held instead at Soldier Field under the name ‘Super Bowl of Rock’. Here is a Chicago Tribune article regarding the fire: http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1976/07...r-sox-park-fire A frightening photo of the incident: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/e...be050167f5e.jpg And a home movie shot by a fan attending the concert: July 31, 1976 ‘World Series of Rock #2’ – CANCELLED Kiss / Uriah Heep / Ted Nugent / Bob Seeger The Silver Bullet Band Here is a full page, color ad for all 3 concerts designed by Shelley Howard, that appeared on the back of ‘JAM’ poster magazine: http://www.shelleyvision.net/classics/pages/wscolor.htm A newspaper ad showing ‘Bob Seeger The Silver Bullet Band’ added to the lineup (go to ‘Page 77 of 328’): http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1976/07...ents/index.html August 13, 1976 ‘World Series of Rock #3’ – MOVED Yes / Peter Frampton / Lynyrd Skynyrd / Gary Wright / Natural Gas Due to the fire at Comiskey Park on July 10th, this concert was moved to Hawthorne Race Track, Stickney, IL (next to Cicero). Local opposition almost prevented this concert from happening at all, even at Hawthorne. A court battle emerged, and a judge allowed the concert to proceed but with a 6:00 PM curfew. The group ‘Yes’ could not use their laser show because they were performing during the daylight. The date of this concert was changed to Sunday, August 15th, 1976. 1975 August 29, 1975 James Brown / Ike & Tina Turner – NOT CONFIRMED I remember Harry Carey and J.C. Martin mentioning this upcoming concert during Channel 44 broadcasts, but I can find any information confirming if the concert actually happened. 1972 September 15, 1972 Roller Derby: Chicago Pioneers vs. Los Angeles Thunderbirds Over 50,000 fans attended this special event. That story was on the entire front page of the Sun-Times on Thursday, September, 22nd, 2016. Nice color photo of the new scoreboard with guaranteed Rate's logo showing on the board, above the headline: 'Sneed Exclusive: Point Of Contention'. Here is a link to the article: http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/sneed...row-adjustment/ .

Originally a new, right field upper deck seating section was proposed to be built along with the renovations. This new seating would have replaced the lost capacity when the top 8 rows of the entire upper deck were removed. I'm glad the right field upper deck seats were never built. http://ballparksofbaseball.com/renderingsmodels.htm (scroll about half way down, on right) .

Chance The Rapper +8 others concert @USCF

For anyone who may be interested, 'Chance The Rapper's Magnificent Coloring Day!' sold out concert on Saturday will be streamed for a fee at the charged TIDAL.com website: https://www.timeout.com/chicago/blog/tidal-...festival-092016 https://listen.tidal.com/playlist/6798a834-...c4-433cc7442067 Apparently this concert will break the all time attendance record at (New) Comiskey Park / U.S. Cellular Field. I suspect that seats were sold in the outfield and bleachers behind the stage. But in order to break any records, that extra seating has to be greater than the 8 rows of upper deck seats which still existed during the 2 previous sold out concerts in 2002 and 2003. http://www.csnchicago.com/chicago-white-so...-rapper-concert . -

Who cares if a skyline is in the background? I don't. Just because other teams do that, doesn't mean we have to. Makes NO difference to me. I'm perfectly happy with the stadium we have now, and I could care less if I can see any skyline or not. I'm more interested with the game on the field, and the amenities inside the stadium. And to anyone who thinks the seats in the upper deck are too high, there's an easy solution: Buy a ticket in the lower deck. Problem solved. .

Today (September 12th) is the 40th anniversary of Bill Veeck's 1976 publicity stunt when Minnie Minoso came out of retirement, and got a hit against the California Angels at the age of 50. Here is the highlight which I believe aired at the time on Channel 44 WSNS. I'm not sure who is in the booth with Harry Carey: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B2-7SxZ1HG8 .

CEO of Guaranteed Rate seems like a good guy
InTheDriversSeat replied to InTheDriversSeat's topic in The Filibuster
ChiSox59, you have your opinion, I have mine. But it is a well known fact that CEO's can be compensated by corporate boards (with salary, stock options, and bonuses) that are hundreds of times more than what regular employees are making, while performance is not commensurate. Not comical / inaccurate at all. Read this to find out the outrageous amounts that CEO’s are getting paid: https://www.thestreet.com/story/13463357/4/...much-money.html Victor Ciardelli seems like a regular guy. He started and built privately held ‘guaranteed Rate’ on his own, and wasn't brought in from the outside and given hundreds of millions of dollars from a corporate board of directors, like other CEO’s. . -
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/kapos-ceo...eed-rates-name/ Victor Ciardelli III, CEO of 'guaranteed Rate' was interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times, and his photo appears today on the front page of the newspaper. Victor is a lifelong Chicagoan and huge sports fan. Unlike most CEO's who get paid tens of millions of dollars for not doing much work, Victor built 'guaranteed Rate' on his own, a company with 1,300 employees. .

The 'U.S. Cellular' logo is carved / etched into the concrete of the stadium, above the home plate entrance at 35th & Shields. Plus, the logo is painted on the roof above the upper deck, and elsewhere around the park. Somebody is going to have work to do during the offseason removing / changing the signage, especially the concrete at 35th Street & Shields Avenue (Bill Veeck Drive). .

Cubs fans are hypocrites because the Chicago Cubs are one of the leaders with sponsorships from corporations in the financial services industry: Nuveen Investments, CBRE (Coldwell Banker Real Estate), Wintrust, etc. Apparently Guaranteed Rate is buying advertising / sponsorship directly from the Sox as well, separate from the naming rights revenue which goes to IFSA: http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article/197...-naming-rights/ I suspect the previous contract with U.S. Cellular prohibited the Sox from selling advertising / sponsorships to other competing wireless telecommunications companies (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.). Having the exclusive contract with U.S. Cellular now gone, opens the door for the Sox to sell new sponsorships to U.S. Cellular competitors. This isn't the first time that U.S. Cellular has terminated naming rights at a venue. Indoor arenas at Milwaukee and Bloomington, Illinois were previously known as 'U.S. Cellular Arena' and 'U.S. Cellular Coliseum'. .

Yes, they do. U.S. Cellular no longer does business in the Chicago area (although the company still has a large corporate office near O'Hare), the company offers plans in other Midwest states. One week ago I was driving thru Wisconsin and heard a radio commercial for U.S. Cellular on a local radio station. I believe they company has a large presence in Iowa also. Not directly, but the money pays for renovations and upkeep of the stadium used by the White Sox, so the money does help the Sox indirectly. I'm am surprised that this did not happen a long time ago after U.S. Cellular pulled out of the Chicago area. Not uncommon for a sponsor to change it's mind after a contract was signed, and for the original sponsor to sub-lease the sponsorship to another company. Happens in NASCAR occasionally. .
