Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+
OnlyGillis replied to Southwest Sider's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:24 PM) Boston fans are notorious for this. Their player is the greatest thing since sliced bread...until your team acquires him, at which point he was obviously a worthless bum and couldn't possibly be worth what they got in return. Believe it or not, they're actually worse about this in football. All that said to say that I'll trust the scouting community at large, who seems to think Moncada is the best young talent they've seen in a long time. Since I live in Red Sox country, I have to listen to the fans you have described. Before Moncada came up in Sept, the talk was how he was the next Nomar and what are they waiting for to bring him to Boston. However once he arrived, he looked like he had never seen a curve ball in his life. It was more than he just looked bad - he was missing them by a foot. He was borderline atrocious. However the positive is that I never read about a scout saying he was anything but a can't miss prospect. Hopefully he was pressing, Sept was a fluke, and half a season at Charlotte will cure whatever ailed him. His minor league stats reflect that he is a strike out waiting to happen, but they also show he hits the hell out of the ball when he makes contact and he can really run. Regarding Kopech, the stats say he is the real deal, but they may want to give him a private room in spring training since he likes to punch out his roomie. -
All New Soccer Thread ~ All Levels ~ All Leagues
OnlyGillis replied to Texsox's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Nice job by the Fire to come away with a draw being down to 10 men for much of the game. Accam hit the post when they were short handed and the way he is playing, I would have expected him to score in the second half if they were 11 vs 11. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 5, 2016 -> 01:42 PM) I have always liked Frazier, and so far he is saying all the right things http://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/frazier...with-white-sox/ He seems to be a good guy and has a rep of having a good attitude, but making a comment about his comfort level after 2 weeks in the warm sun is a little rash unless he did it just to get a jump on planting a seed for his future.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 11, 2016 -> 05:08 PM) This shocks me. He must have a terrible agent. Edit: I just looked up his agent and the guy has Pujols and Votto. I wonder what he has against Jimmy.

QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Mar 11, 2016 -> 09:01 AM) One more thing on Brett Lawrie. His surname is pronounced like the name "Laurie," now "Lowry." This confusion alone is enough to make me regret signing him; I hear people getting it wrong more often than not. Hopefully once the game broadcasts start up this'll be rectified? I think the announcers will be able to remember ... even Kruk on Sunday nights.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 11, 2016 -> 05:35 PM) Rodon is going to be filthy this year, I can feel it. Might struggle with walks at times but I think he's got a really good chance to turn in a 4-5 fWAR season. Won't put down any ERA numbers as it's too park and defense dependent but I think he has a chance to put together a top 30 season from a fWAR standpoint among SP. This rotation could be filthy if they get anything out of Danks and Latos other than replacement level. Sale, Q, Rodon is as good as it gets for a top three. I agree the top 3 could be as good as any 3 in the league but Danks and Latos at their best won't fill out a filthy rotation. Every time those 2 take the mound everybody better be ducking to avoid the rocket shots. Winning 7-6 in their games may be the best we can hope for.

Eaton posted 2nd highest AL CF OPS+ in 2014-15
OnlyGillis replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
You can probably count on one hand players who are consistent through every month of the season. Eaton is no different than most. -
Some interesting stats: Abreu vs power pitchers - .240 / .707 OPS; vs relievers - .231 / .673 OPS
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 26, 2015 -> 12:02 AM) Why would managers bring in a lefty specialist to face Abreu? I didn't say it was logical to bring them in to face him, but since there are virtually no LH starters in the Central, he must have faced them mostly in later innings.

Who are the worst players in White Sox history?
OnlyGillis replied to ChiSoxFanMike's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sammy Esposito (part timer in the '50s) and Ron Karkovice (semi-regular in the '90s) were atrocious hitters that stick in my memory. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 21, 2015 -> 07:41 AM) http://espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/insider/post?id=11898 The first part of the story is here....headline story on the ESPN MLB page for now. Interesting (but unsurprising) how many teams have been hoping the White Sox would be open to trading Sale this offseason. Now where's the final piece of the puzzle, JR? Next fall, the best free-agent pitchers could be Stephen Strasburg, Brett Anderson and Jered Weaver, and the best position players figure to be a 31-year-old Carlos Gomez and a 33-year-old Martin Prado, and perhaps Jose Bautista. An NL executive offered a one-word description of the depth of next year's free-agent class: "Horrific." From the Olney piece three days ago about why CLE is being patient in dealing Carrasco or Salazar. A lot of turkeys available on Thanksgiving.

He hit .233 with whimpy power in AA, but .282 with adequate power in AAA. Maybe facing pitchers with better control made him a better hitter so maybe he won't be horrendous for the Sox?? I'm grasping at straws here, you know.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 23, 2015 -> 12:13 PM) I wonder what that was accustomed to? They don't face any seriously good LHP in ALC. The White Sox have the best LHP in the AL! Late inning lefty specialists? He hit .219 and .231 in the 8th and 9th. I wouldn't be surprised if many of those he faced were lefties.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 23, 2015 -> 01:06 PM) The Sox are signing one of the big names, so this thread isn't necessary. At least I hope so lol.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 01:27 PM) Wow, and some Sox fans comp!ain about JR. The owners paying off debt would explain why they aren't spending despite having such cheap young pitching. I really feel for their fans because those five starters are a hell of a foundation to build the team off of and yet the owners aren't doing it. That said, maybe a trade based around Avi for Granderson could make sense for both teams. The Sox get their left handed middle of the order right fielder and the Mets get a right handed and much cheaper right fielder. Seems as though it would be a good fit as long as the Mets weren't expecting top tier talent in return with Avi. Just trying to think outside the box. Granderson is a .230-.250 strike out hitter with power who is getting old. The Mets were so hard up for a lead off hitter, they had to use him in that spot. However he was kind of a veteran "glue" guy for an inexperienced young team. I can't imagine them giving him up for a guy like Avi that Sox fans would be happy to dump.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Dec 24, 2015 -> 04:07 PM) I really hope the Sox don't sign Cespedes - there's a reason he's been on 4 teams in like 2 years. All reports are he's a terrible teammate. Definitely not what we need - more chemistry problems. My two cents. I get Red Sox games on cable and I never heard that Cespedes was a clubhouse problem. His plate discipline wasn't very good and he was streaky (good and bad), but I never heard anything negative about the guy.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 27, 2015 -> 10:50 PM) I would have never guessed that a few years after the trade that Iglesias would be a better hitter than Avi. Iglesias has to come back to his norm eventually. He gets more hits that are squibbers, bloops, and ground balls than anybody I have ever seen. His BABIP is close to Miguel Cabrera's.

QUOTE (OnlyGillis @ Apr 27, 2015 -> 06:46 PM) As discussed on Boston radio ... two years ago no Red Sox pitcher wanted to throw to Salty. Farrell benched him in the World Series after game 3 and they won the last 3 games with David Ross. Salty is a stiff ... and there is no double meaning there despite the fact that he married his high school gym teacher who is 14 years older than him. At the time he was 19. QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 27, 2015 -> 08:45 PM) why?? Pitchers constantly had to shake him off, poor pitch framing, less than average throwing ability.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 24, 2015 -> 02:34 PM) I got threatened to be suspended for a calling a Sox player ugly once. Now I pretend they are all as pretty as Gordon Beckham. Just because he married Posh Spice? ... or am I thinking of the wrong Beckham

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 11:41 AM) Fowler is hurt, Coghlan doesn't hit LHP, but not sure why Denorfia is in LF when he has experience in CF. Only safe assumption is that Maddon has Bryant in a fantasy league with LF/CF/RF eligibility and he is weak in center. Good one.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 03:30 PM) This must have been the slowest run down ever. Wayne Randazzo @WayneRandazzo 37s37 seconds ago Bartolo Colon with a caught stealing 1 unassisted under his belt now this season, chasing down AJ Pierzynski, who was trying to steal. #Mets It's hard to picture both of these old men running.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 04:09 PM) I am guessing if you ask 1000 casual fans about Eddie Collins the most common answer would be "Who the f*** is Eddie Collins?" Exactly. 2/3 of fans today have no clue about baseball history pre-90s.

Who was the guy in the jacket that took a swing at Jeff as he was going to the ground?
