  1. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 17, 2005 -> 10:25 PM) Julian Wright did not always want to go to Kansas. It took a last-minute visit by Self. Traitao had a good relationship with Wright and his family. Unfortunately, his scheduled visit was going to come after Self made his visit, but there was no need for that anyways. And there really is no comparison between Traitao and weber since he had Dorrell Wright coming to DePaul before the NBA came calling and the incoming class is ranked top 20. That's going to be a very big chance. Talk to me after weber can bring those guys in...and that's a big if... That visit by Self was set up by Julian. Julian was not sold on Arizona, DePaul, or Illinois. So I guess you could say it was poor recruiting by all three coaches in this situation. He called up Self who he had always liked and wanted to play for and when Self came he closed the deal. Didn't say it wasn't good recruiting by Self, just not the miracle some people like to think.
  2. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 17, 2005 -> 10:09 PM) If my BROTHER is coaching a kid in my state and I can't get him to come to my school after going to a Final Four, the championship game, and being ranked the top team for the most of the year, should I be considered a good recruiter? Good recruiters for good schools are able to come in and convince kids to come to their schools even if they're leaning towards a certain school. Hey, what happened with Julian Wright? Julian Wright always wanted to go to Kansas and thats where he went. So I'm not sure that shows someone changing where they are leaning too. Last I checked, the great recruitier Dave Leitao couldn't even get Wright to visit DePaul before he made his decision. Scheyer always wanted to go to Duke, and Chris Collins relatioship with the Scheyer's was just as much of an advantage for Duke as Dave Weber was for Illinois. Read Scheyer's comments, he always wanted to play for Duke, this isn't a case of a guy just leaning towards a certain school, this was recruiting against Duke when the guy dreamed of playing there. The Scheyer's basically even said that the only reason Illinois was even seriously considered was their run this year. So Illinois went from having zero chance to "Scheyer being torn" so Bruce must have done something right. So you are saying if by chance, Weber brings in a class consisting of Collins, Carlwell, and Semrau he is a bad recruiter because he couldn't bring in a Scheyer?
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) Exactly what I was thinking. What kind of team is national runner up and can't even keep their own kids in-state? That isn't a good sign. If we don't get Sherron Collins or Brian Carlwell I'll agree with this. As for Scheyer, I suppose Weber should have been able to change the mind of a kid who always wanted to play for Duke, and is a North Shore kid where UI is seen as a backup school. Scheyer was a Dukie from the moment they offered him. I just wish he wouldn't have wasted everyone's time.
  4. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ May 17, 2005 -> 04:37 PM) I really think you're underestimating this kid. He may not be the most athletic, but he's certainly no stiff. He is a smart player with excellent fundamentals. He's rated one of the top recruits in the country by most services. He is a very good offensive player. I just don't think he is capable of being very good defensively. He has a very good floor game, is a good shooter, and like you said he is a very intelligent player. That doesn't mean he can play D. I have said I have wanted him and that he would fit in very well to Weber's motion offense. I don't think he will start for Duke because they are bringing in Henderson in the same class with Scheyer, already have Pocius, Paulus, Nelson, and McClure. He will be a solid contributor but I don't think he is a world beater at the college level.
  5. This recruitment has been done for months and Illinois never had a chance for Scheyer to be completely honest. He is a good player who will probably be a solid contributor of the bench for Duke. But he is not athletic at all, and is going to struggle big time on the defensive side of the ball so he is going to the right school because he can learn to flop and hand check without getting caught. He can score but I like guys who can play good D and I don't think Scheyer can do that. I still wanted him mostly from the PR standpoint but would prefer Willie Kemp to Scheyer anyways.
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2005 -> 09:29 AM) Isn't Oden pretty sold on IU? No, he and Conley are both have been favoring Wake and OSU. And unless an age limit gets passes Oden will not play college ball because he will be the #1 pick and you have to be stupid to pass that up.
  7. QUOTE(danman31 @ May 16, 2005 -> 07:23 PM) Scheyer is a big deal because he is the best player in Illinois in the class of 06. It's a test of how Illinois will be able to recruit off that amazing season they had in their own state. I suppose the thinking is that if Illinois can't get the best player in their own state after going 35-2 or whatever then they aren't going to stay as one of the elite teams in the country. I'm not saying I believe that, but it is what it is. This is true, Scheyer is a very good player and I would love to see him as an Illini. But in reality wings are not that important for the '06 class and I think we have a chance at wings or taller PGs like Willie Kemp who could make just as much of an impact on the court. Scheyer is a big recruit for Weber based on perception more than what he actually may accomplish in college. As for the person who said Scheyer would be smart to choose Duke, the last couple Illinois players to attend Duke were Michael Thompson and Sean Dockery. Ask them how they feel about their decision to attend Duke now.
  8. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 12, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) Re-read my post. Here's a quick excerpt of the point that I made: I'm a Hinrich fan, and he's a good team defender, but just about any top-tier guard can take him one-on-one. To be fair to Hinrich who I wouldn't classify as an elite defender just yet, just about any top tier guard can take just about any other player in the NBA one on one. Only the very special defensive players like Jordan and Pippen in their primes can contain guys one on one.
  9. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ May 12, 2005 -> 12:30 PM) I see the moralist are at it again eh?? Because if I'm not mistaken this is the same board that holds the "Hot Chic" contest all the time... yet these are bad huh? I don't think this is morally based. The reason that the Hot chick contest is allowed to stay is because people know exactly what they are going to get and if they are at work they should know better then to enter those threads. If there is T and A in the avatars or sigs, unless people turn them off completely they can't really do anything about it. It has more to do with respect and making Soxtalk work friendly.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 12, 2005 -> 11:33 AM) This was the line that blew my mind. Basically because Hitler was elected, Germans had no rights not to be killed. That was ridiculous to me as well. So apparently if you come to power through election you have the freedom to do anything you want and there wouldn't be justification for another nation to attack you. Even if you are exterminating people and invading other nations without provocation.
  11. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 12, 2005 -> 11:27 AM) To borrow a phrase... wow. just wow. http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/na...lnews-headlines People are stupid, it is incredible that anyone could feel that way.
  12. QUOTE(longshot7 @ May 11, 2005 -> 05:31 PM) They lost 2 of 3 to Detroit at home and now they're gonna lose 2 of 3 to Cleveland at home. They're getting demolished by the Jndians right now. What is up with them? They're in first place but happened to not play real well for a stretch. It happens
  13. QUOTE(backman @ May 10, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) Indiana has owned the heat recently. I don't care and I repeat, Indiana would have zero chance against the Heat in a 7 game series unless Shaq or Wade was injured.
  14. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 10, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) You are all set. Thanks
  15. Can an admin change my description back to whatever the normal setting is rather than have Mr. Hot Chick there> THanks
  16. QUOTE(soxman352000 @ May 9, 2005 -> 11:56 PM) irrogant Is this some sort of internet slang that I'm unfamiliar with?
  17. QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 9, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) How many times is that fat slob going to change his opinion? He ripped on the Sox at first but now he likes them? Because no one here ever changes their opinions on players or teams. No one here thought the Bulls were terrible when they were 0-9 and then changed their tune when the Bulls started to win. Give it a rest, the Sox hadn't proven anything the last few years to make people outside this fan base believe that they were going to actually contend this year. While I liked the moves Williams made, this team was quite unproven to begin the year and nobody really knew what to expect. Opinions can change, there isn't anything wrong with that.
  18. QUOTE(backman @ May 9, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) I think that the pistons and Indiana will beat the heat, but it depends on if Indiana can beat the pistons. I rather see it pistons heat. The west series are just blowouts, San Antonio vs. phoenix. Heat vs. Phoenix (offense vs. offense) or spurs vs. Detroit (defense vs. defense) Indiana wouldn't have a chance against Miami and it doesn't matter because the Pistons will win that series easily.
  19. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 9, 2005 -> 08:04 PM) Exactly.....Nash, Johnson, Richardson, Marion, Stoudemire > Duhon, Hinrich, Deng, Harrington/Davis, Curry The Suns record>Bulls record so whats your point. And Amare is not a top 5 player in the league.
  20. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 9, 2005 -> 06:05 PM) I'm actually being sarcastic here. I don't think anyone really considers Huff to be a true threat to swipe bags. Your use of sarcasm sucks.
  21. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 9, 2005 -> 06:01 PM) So far this season he is. He's currently on pace for 15 SB's. His career high is 5 and he also would end up being caught 10 times at this pace which would be right on pace with his career numbers. Anyone is a threat to steal a base once in a while but you don't have to worry about Huff running a whole lot.
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 9, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) Not to mention Huff who has just as many stolen bases this season as Sanchez. Huff is not a threat to steal bases.
  23. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ May 8, 2005 -> 04:56 PM) I think that Dee's as good as gone now. This is gonna be a brutal year. I disagree that Dee is as good as gone but we will see.
  24. QUOTE(The Bones @ May 7, 2005 -> 10:58 PM) Another blowout in Game 7 of the Dallas-Houston series. Steve Nash will get to play his former team in the Conference Semifinals. McGrady had a down game tonight, but he and Yao have combined for 58 pts on 23-48 shooting. The rest of the Rockets, 16 pts on 5-29 shooting. Thats quite a job by the supporting cast.
  25. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 6, 2005 -> 09:49 PM) You thought weber could recruit scheyer? Nobody was going to recruit Scheyer. Duke was his dream school. But we were still in until today so I was holding out a little hope. I'm a lot more upset about Dee. I think Semrau who we got over the weekend has more college potential then Scheyer anyway and SG isn't a need but Weber had to recruit Scheyer anyways. I would rather see us make a hard push to bring in Willie Kemp who is a 6-3 PG along with Sherron Collins and hopefully have a similar backcourt to Dee and Deron.
